Social club set up for special needs adults

The Wake Forest Parks, Recreation, & Cultural Resources Department is introducing a monthly social club in June for special needs residents in our community ages 15 and older.

Beginning Thursday, June 22, the department will host Club Connect on the fourth Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Alston-Massenburg Center on North Taylor Street.

“We’re inviting the members of our special needs community to join us once a month for socialization, activities and fun,” said Specialized Programs Recreation Specialist Kelly Schurtz. Attendees will have the opportunity to socialize with peers, play games, be creative, and plan activities based on input from the group. There is no fee, but participants must be able to perform self-care routines independently. They may also bring a buddy.

For more information, contact Schurtz at 919-556-7093 or kschurtz@wakeforestnc.gov.

The department offers two other programs for special needs children and adults.

Fun with Fitness is a monthly fitness program. The next program will be yoga on Saturday, July 8, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. at the Alston-Massenburg Center at 416 North Taylor Street. Coming up on Aug. 12 is a class in zumba. These classes are designed to offer exceptional individuals the opportunity to learn basic exercise techniques and movements in a safe and accepting environment. There is a fee and registration is required. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle and a buddy if necessary.

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre will host Special Needs Movie Night on Friday, July 28, at 6:30 p.m. The featured movie will be “Sing” (Rated PG).

Sponsored by the PRCR, this free event will offer exceptional children and their families the opportunity to enjoy a film in a safe and accepting environment. To help ensure an enjoyable experience for everyone, the viewing area will include extra lighting, and the movie’s volume will be slightly lower.

The event’s theme is “fun without repercussions,” so audience members will be invited to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing.

There is no cost to participate, but a parent or caretaker must accompany each child.

Concessions, including popcorn and soft drinks, will be available for purchase, but attendees are invited to bring their favorite snack.

The next Special Needs Movie Night is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 18.
