Smith Creek sewer construction begins Nov. 3

The City of Raleigh and Park Construction of NC Inc. are slated to begin construction on the Smith Creek Interceptor Improvement Project (SCIIP) on Monday, Nov. 3.

Located entirely within the Town of Wake Forest service area, the project will install a new 30-inch sewer line of the Smith Creek Sanitary Sewer Interceptor from the Smith Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant to Lagerfeld Road. The initiative will also install a 24-inch line of the sewer interceptor from Lagerfeld Road to Heritage Height, and a 16-inch line from Heritage Height to Franklin Street.

The project will affect portions of the Town of Wake Forest Greenway System including the section of the Smith Creek Greenway from Burlington Mills Road to the Neuse River Bridge and Dunn Creek Greenway near Heritage Lake Road. These areas will be closed during periods of construction.

Signs announcing the Smith Creek Greenway will be posted at the trail’s Burlington Mills entrance and atop the Neuse River Connector. Signage describing the Dunn Creek Greenway closure will be posted at the Smith Creek Soccer Center.

According to the current project schedule, construction in the vicinity of the Smith Creek Greenway will begin Nov. 3. The greenway is expected to reopen in late spring 2015. The City of Raleigh has not announced when work will begin in the area of the Dunn Creek Greenway.

The Smith Creek Greenway is part of the 27.5 mile Neuse River Trail. Other trail access points in the Wake Forest area are located at 6100 Thornton Road, Raleigh; 5956 Myakka Court, Raleigh; and 2928 Horseshoe Farm Road, Raleigh.

The City of Raleigh scheduled the SCIIP after a study revealed the need for additional flow capacity due to Wake Forest’s considerable growth since its water and sewer system merger with Raleigh in 2005. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2016 at an estimated cost of $7.9 million.
