Bright spring afternoons melting into dusk and twilight, children playing and parents chatting, music, Frisbees – who has not been charmed and delighted by Six Sundays in Spring? And it will continue to charm more people, returning this year on Sunday, April 24, through May 29.
It was originally held on the lawn in front of the Calvin Jones House on North Main Street but relocated to E. Carroll Joyner Park several years ago because of its growing audience. Wherever, it is still a signature event on the Wake Forest spring calendar.
All free. Come as you are, bring your friends, your children and spouse, your in-laws, and a chair or blanket. Eating is optional; you can bring a basket for an al fresco meal or buy something different from one of the several vendors.
The concerts last from 5 to 7 p.m., and Boneslinger will lead off the six concerts on April 24. The group is described thusly: Powerhouse vocalist and trombonist Dave Wright, formerly of The Countdown Quartet and The Squirrel Nut Zippers, brings his latest creation to life with Boneslinger. Staying true to his old-school R&B, New Orleans-jazz roots, Boneslinger brings a fresh brew of original music with a killin’ retro vibe. You’ll also hear timeless cuts from Professor Longhair, Booker T, Hank Williams Sr., Ray Charles and much more. Dave Wright’s powerful and soulful trombone solos are one of a kind and always an audience delight! You’ll be a “Bone Head” for life once you’ve heard this band!”
The rest of the concert lineup is May 1 – EG Peters Band; May 8 –Affirmative Groove; May 15 – The Johnny Folsom 4; May 22 – Faol Liath; and May 29 –JamRock.
In the event of rain, the free concerts will switch to the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre on Brooks Street. Remember you cannot bring alcohol, personal grills, weapons of any kind or unleashed pets. But do come and enjoy.
