Several Memorial Day ceremonies

The Wake Forest VFW Memorial Post 8466 invites area residents to one or all of its Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 29, and to help them place American flags on each veteran’s grave in area cemeteries on Saturday, May 27.

There are over 1,500 veteran graves in the area in 15 cemeteries, and placing the flags takes a lot of man- and woman-power. Volunteers are asked to be at the American Legion Post on East Holding Avenue across from the U.S. Post Office between 8 and 9 a.m. to receive the flags and directions to the cemeteries and the veteran graves in each one. There will be refreshments.

Also, on Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, VFW members will be at the Wal-Mart store on South Main Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. passing out the Buddy Poppy, a symbol of solidarity with disabled American veterans.

On Memorial Day there will two separate flag-raising events at retirement homes and a longer ceremony at the Wake Forest Veterans’ Memorial near the Heritage Golf Club House.

The first flag-raising will be at 7:45 a.m. at The Lodge retirement home, 1151 South Main Street, and the public is invited. People are also invited to the flag-raising at The Gardens retirement home at 12800 Spruce Tree Way in Raleigh (Wakefield area) at 2:30 p.m.

The Veterans’ Memorial ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. and will include patriotic music, singing of the National Anthem, addresses from various Wake Forest veteran groups, a wreath-laying and Taps. There is ample parking beside the memorial on Heritage Club Avenue.
