Senior Center this week

Dear Northern Wake Senior Center Members, advisory board, supporters, and friends:

We are still here with plenty for you to do to keep busy, happy and healthy! As promised since March 15, we have been providing many of our traditional onsite programs through virtual platforms.  It is our intention to continue to do so and build a library of information with timeless accessibility for you through technology. Yes, as with generations throughout history, it seems that growth occurs as a result of creative ideas necessitated by tragic situations.  Raymond Linquist so eloquently stated, “Courage is the power to let go of the familiar. Now is a great time for all of us to have the courage and desire to change numerous thouWghts, habits, and rituals regardless of our age. Yes we may have to learn how to do things differently but remember cognitive training is advised in later life.

For many years all of the Senior Center’s calendars and communications have been provided on paper.  This is a perfect time for us to practice courage and do something different, and we are. Beginning this month, your senior center staff members are happy to say that we have and continue to update our files with your emails and will be communicating in that fashion unless you do not have access to a device to receive emails or desire to opt out of our email database. If either of those is the case, please let us know, we will be happy to assist and provide information in other matters in the past four weeks.

The following are programs, services and community outreach initiatives now offered please call the center if you have any questions or wish to participate:

Knights of Columbus Council at St Catherine of Siena Food, Supplies Bags, and monetary donations:

  • The Knights of Columbus, Council 11234, at St. Catherine of Siena, Wake Forest have partnered with Resources for Seniors to help alleviate food insecurity for Wake County’s older adults by providing non-perishable groceries and items while the Stay-At-Home directive is in effect. To date over 1000 members in the community have been served.

o    The community is invited to join them and participate by going into Sign Up Genius where the types and quantities of groceries are listedhttps://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0545a9a829a64-love1 .  Delivery drop offices will be at the Northern Wake Senior Center in Wake Forest from 10-12 on Wednesdays. To date monetary collections in excess of 4K.  Trip made to Food Bank with approximately $1,200 worth of nonperishable items to be put in bags. Bags are being picked up by various parties who discover needs throughout the area.  Today April 6, 9 families received bags from various sources to include SING members who identified needs and Resources for Seniors who did the same.

30 Day Virtual Connect challenge begins Monday, April 13.  Note:  This has to be done through the Facebook page listed below. We at Resources for Seniors, Inc. are here for you.  We have developed a fun and educational 30-day challenge to connect all of us. The challenge is comprised of activities which you can do as you remain “sheltering safely in place.”  Activities include connecting with our environment, virtual experiences and sharing our knowledge with others.  As a result we will have a one of a kind historic record to share with others in the future.

It will be easy to join our challenge and to invite others.  Beginning Monday, April 13, 2020 simply click on “going” on our Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/resourcesforseniors/ at the 30-day Connect Challenge event site.  Be sure to read the rules. As an added incentive to those that participate in this challenge, there will be a drawing at the end of the 30 days for prizes donated by our agency’s partner organizations and friends. Once you are “going” you will be automatically enrolled in our drawing on May 12th.

We look forward to sharing in this challenge with you and reading your comments along the way. A new activity will appear daily. We hope you will find the 30-day Connect Challenge to be both entertaining and educational.  Please let others know about this event and encourage everyone to participate. This is just one more way in which Resources for Seniors is here for you.

Massive Mask production: Several of our members have been busy making masks for various local sources in need.  They have done this in their homes.  If anyone is interested in assisting please call one of our centers.

Calling and email Campaign:  You may be receiving a phone call or email from one of our employees asking you some information regarding updated addresses, phone numbers and emails.  They are also calling to check in with you to see how you are and if we can be of assistance.  Thank you for responding to the phone calls or emails as quickly as possible.  These are not a scam! If you would reply back with this information via email it would be most appreciated.

On behalf of our team, I want to thank you for your continued support and interest. Just think how much we are going to appreciate the centers when we can come back! Until then just remember, “What seems to us bitter trials are often blessings in disguise.”  (Oscar Wilde)

Blessings,
