Repairs beginning for Richland Greenway

The Richland Creek Greenway, which begins at the Cottage at Olde Mill Stream on Barnford Mill Road, has been closed for over a year because of severe stream bank erosion that undermined the greenway.

Work is now underway that may allow the greenway to be reopened as early as mid-December.

The town has been consulting with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the state Division of Water Resources to form a plan to relocate or repair the greenway.

The current effort will stabilize the stream banks and relocate about 250 feet of the greenway away from the current trail and sewer lines. Log vanes will be placed in the creek to redirect the water flow and reduce the velocity.

Another Wake Forest greenway, part of the Smith Creek Greenway, has been closed and will remain closed until late spring next year.

The City of Raleigh has begun construction on the Smith Creek Interceptor Improvement Project, sewer lines stretching from the Smith Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant to Franklin Street.

Because of that construction, the portions of the Smith Creek Greenway from Burlington Mils Road to the Neuse River Bridge and the Dunn Creek Greenway near Heritage Lake Road.

There will be signs about the closings posted at the trail entrances.
