Professional basketball player J.J. Miller, who plays in Europe, will lead this year’s basketball camps for boys and girls, and only a limited number of slots remain open. The camps are sponsored by the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department and led by Miller’s company, Hoopers Elite Basketball Service Company.
A Chinquapin native, Miller (James Miller Jr.) has played professional basketball for 14 years. He is USA Basketball Youth Development Certified and is director/owner of Hoopers.
J.J. Miller basketball camps strive to help each camper develop the fundamentals of the game while having loads of fun. The youth that attend these camps will experience the value of teamwork, discipline, strong work ethic and moral values through the game of basketball.
Open to boys ages 7 to 17, the boys’ camp is scheduled for Monday–Friday, July 10-14, at the Flaherty Park Community Center, 1226 North White Street. Boys ages 7 to 12 will receive instruction from 8 a.m. to noon, while ages 13 to 17 will meet from 1-5 p.m. The session for boys ages 7 to 12 is filled but there is a waiting list.
The girls’ basketball camp is open to girls ages 7 to 17 and scheduled from Monday–Friday, July 24-28, at the Flaherty Park Community Center. Ages 7 to 12 will assemble from 8 a.m.-noon, and ages 13 to 17 will receive instruction from 1-5 p.m.
Instructors at both camps will emphasize basic basketball fundamentals, including dribbling, shooting, free throws, defensive skills and more. Participants will be divided by age group for drill activities and game competitions.
The cost for the boys’ and girls’ camps is $90 and includes a camp T-shirt.

Miller also invites several of his professional friends from the NBA and International leagues to speak to the campers about education, self-esteem, believing in their dreams and other helpful topics. Last year’s camp speakers included former NBA champion, current NBA scout and N.C. State Wolfpack player Chucky Brown, as well as former UNC Tar Heel National Champion, NBA player and current international pro David Noel.
As good as J.J. is on the court, he strives to be even better off the court. J.J. says it has always been one of his aspirations to help kids have a brighter future, and he prides himself on being a positive role model.
