PO truck catches fire

A United States Postal Service truck caught on fire early Tuesday, sending the driver scrambling to exit the vehicle and save what she could of the onboard packages.

At approximately 7:04 a.m. the Wake Forest Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle fire near the intersection of Heritage Lake Road and Heritage Heights Lane. By 7:10 a.m. firefighters had extinguished the blaze, but the truck was destroyed. Officials say the fire started in the engine compartment then spread to the rest of the vehicle.

The carrier and a passerby managed to rescue most, but not all, of the onboard packages. The carrier was not injured and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Affected customers with questions about missing or recently mailed packages are urged to call 336-668-1307. Postal Service officials say in the event an item was damaged, it will be returned to the shipper today for repackaging and delivered later this week.
