Pearce recognized as Main Street Champion

Doug Pearce, owner of Brooks Street Bowl as well as president and CEO of Food Group, was recognized in March as a Main Street Champion during the 2020 NC Main Street Awards Conference in New Bern.

Downtown Director Lisa Hayes said Pearce is an especially deserving Main Street Champion. “Doug is a leading force and visionary in the economic vitality of Downtown Wake Forest. Several years ago he purchased a small downtown restaurant [Over the Falls]. By leveraging his extensive knowledge of the food and beverage industry and enlisting the help of his son, the restaurant quickly outgrew the space. For their new restaurant they chose a location in an underutilized shopping center along South Brooks Street in downtown. That restaurant is now an incredibly popular destination spot for Wake Forest residents and residents in surrounding communities.”

Pearce continued the revitalization of the shopping center by purchasing additional storefronts and installing Wake Forest’s only bowling alley, which includes a concession stand, full bar and party area. Later, he transformed another vacant space into a trendy, popular boutique, managed by his daughter.

“The shopping center, now known as Renaissance Place, went from being neglected and empty to completely full of engaging, successful businesses,” said Hayes.

She added, “Doug has worked hard to make Downtown Wake Forest such a great and unique place for our citizens and visitors alike and his investment, unstoppable energy and vision for the heart of our community are greatly appreciated.”

Pearce was one of 45 individuals and organizations from across North Carolina to receive the honor in recognition of their commitment to downtown revitalization. This year’s group of Main Street Champions brings the total number to 766 since champions were first named in 1980.

“Despite the short-term uncertainty in the global economy right now, vibrant downtowns will remain catalysts for North Carolina’s economic prosperity in the years ahead,” said NC Commerce Secretary Anthony M. Copeland. “These honorees have shown considerable creativity and dedication in improving their communities. We’re proud to honor their vision and hard work as Main Street Champions.”
