She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and speech communications from Western Kentucky University and a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Kentucky. She was well-loved by all the families in the group because of her kind, nurturing heart and her commitment to excellence in education.

Stephanie’s faith was a central part of her life. She lived out her commitment to Christ by discipling her boys and modeling the gospel for them. She loved her husband deeply and joined him in ministry with many English- and Spanish-speaking churches. William Cory Burell

Wake Forest

William Cory Burell died peacefully on Thursday, March 7, 2019, at the age of 35 after a valiant fight with familial ALS.

Cory was an incredible husband and father and loved his family dearly.  He is survived by his wife, Alison Burell; sons, Garrett and Hunter of the home; mother, Rebecca Burell-Rhodes and stepfather, Michael Rhodes, of Wake Forest; brother and sister-in-law, Howie and Tara Thompson of Chapin, South Carolina; loving in-laws, five nieces, one nephew and many other family and friends.   He was preceded in death by his father, Billie E. Burell of Raleigh.

Born March 12, 1983 in Charleston, South Carolina to Billie and Rebecca Burrell, Cory spent his childhood in Argyle, Texas and Raleigh. A 2001 graduate of Leesville High School, Cory continued his education at East Carolina University where he received a bachelor of science in manufacturing systems and industrial supervision and a minor in industrial technology management. Cory worked in the electrical construction industry for over 15 years, most recently serving as preconstruction director for Cooper Electrical Construction Company.  His commitment and service to the industry has left an indelible fingerprint on both Cooper and many others. Cory loved his job and was committed to making a lasting legacy on every project that he touched.

At a young age, the terminal disease ALS rocked Cory’s world.  His father was diagnosed and died when Cory was 13. Not a stranger to the impacts of ALS, Cory did not let this stop him. He found passion and drive in advocacy, research and fundraising for a cure upon his diagnosis. Known to many as a clinical trial guru, Cory spent countless hours researching and engaging with others. In addition, he actively participated in a clinical trial at Duke and John Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland. Cory actively engaged and collaborated with organizations such as ALS-TDI and I AM ALS. Cory received the Stephen Heywood Patients Today Award in November 2018 given by ALS-TDI. This award is presented to a member of the ALS community who has proven to be a strong advocate for research and awareness. This person challenges their community to collectively fight the disease while serving as an educator for those unfamiliar with ALS.

Cory has made an immeasurable difference on each individual he touched. He was an ECU Pirate at heart, loved being on his boat and always made others smile. Cory lived in the moment; he enjoyed what was going on when it was going on. That’s one reason so many people loved spending time with him. His energy came through and connected everyone. His family finds comfort in knowing that he is no longer in pain and reunited with his father. Cory will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ALS-TDI, 300 Technology Square, Suite 400, Cambridge, MA 02139 or to Hopkins ALS Clinical Care & Educational Fund, C/O Lora Clawson, JHOPC Suite 5070 A, 601 N. Caroline Street, Baltimore, MD 21287.

The funeral was held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2019 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. After the service family and friends gathered to celebrate Cory’s life and his 36th birthday.

Jessica Erin Kenny

Raleigh

Jessica Erin Kenny was summoned to the arms of God in her 25th year on the night of March 1, 2019. Born in Florence, South Carolina on October 26, 1993, Jessica’s life was not granted the fullness of years, but her years were granted the fullness of life. Every dream that took root in her mind became a passion of her heart. She understood that life was a journey, and while there were goals to be pursued, the journey must be savored for every moment, every blessing and every friendship.

While Jessica was an only child, her lifelong friend, Allison Forsythe, was her sister in spirit; each was the other’s touchstone, whether in adventure, disappointment or triumph. Just as they shared their days and years, they shared their final moments. Now they have embarked on their greatest adventure, and it will last for as far as forever can see. Though Brian Sjostedt also shared Jessica’s final moments, he will be remembered for blessing her life with love, devotion, and joy beyond measure.

Jessica enjoyed the distinction of two bachelor of science degrees, one in accounting and one in finance, each awarded by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She worked as an accountant for the Capital Automotive Group, where she was viewed not only as a consummate professional, but a consummate human being, who was always gracious, always supportive and always caring.

Jessica enjoyed tennis, boating, and the tranquility of water. But her greatest joy was loving and being loved. She shared the path of her life with those who are left to savor the memories she etched on their hearts: her father, John Kenny of Raleigh; mother, Anna Fedorow of Alberta, Canada; grandmother, Ruth Fedorow of Alberta, Canada; godmother, Teresa Fedorow of Alberta, Canada; godfather, Mike Wheatley of Ontario, Canada; and Fran Powell of Raleigh, who was a special confidante and friend for the second half of Jessica’s journey.

Teresa Payne Gibbs

Franklinton

Teresa Payne Gibbs, 57, died Saturday, January 19, 2019. She was born April 9, 1961 in Durham to the late Helen Elizabeth Karleskint Payne and the late Vivian Troy “Jack” Payne.

Teresa was a teacher for nearly 25 years and was a great lover of gardening and all things that could grow. On any given day she could be found in her classroom reading books to the hundreds of children she taught over 25 years or in her yard tending to flowers.

She had a great love for EMS, with her daughter and son-in-law working as paramedics. As her daughter finished her degree in EMS, her now son-in-law wanted to pursue his training in EMS. While Candice famously didn’t think it was a good idea, Teresa was an ardent supporter of him following in Candice’s footsteps. When Teresa was hospitalized before her passing, she took every opportunity to tell the other healthcare providers just how great paramedics were and that they were the best at starting IVs.

She was especially grateful to Paramedic Alex Stephenson of Franklin County EMS and the staff at WakeMed North Emergency Department who cared for her during her illness.

Teresa was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Linda Carol Payne Hare, Joseph Frederick Payne, Rita Joyce Payne Richardson, Edward Payne; a nephew, Jeffrey Scott Ferrell; and a great-nephew, Scott Wayne Ferrell.

James A. ‘Jim’ ‘Hoss’ Creech

Knightdale

James A. Creech, 94, of Knightdale passed from this life surrounded by his loving wife of 73 years, Joyce Soprano Creech, and family members.

In his remarkable life, he raised three daughters, Jeannine Weeks (Paul) of Louisville, Tennessee, Jamie Reinsch (John) of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Jerri Buck (Glenn) of Knightdale. He is also survived by his four grandchildren,  James Weeks (Erika) of Nashville, Tennessee, Catherine Robson (Derek) of Billerica, Massachusetts, Justin Buck (Carrington) of Raleigh and Kathleen Wilkerson of Sumter, South Carolina. He is survived by his brother, Roy Creech, and was preceded in death by his siblings, Ruth, Edward, Tom, Joe and Percy. He would learn shortly before his passing that he was to become a great-grandfather which would have brought him great joy. But it is not the story of his passing that I want to share with you, but rather the story of this extraordinary, yet ordinary man and his life well lived.

Born to Walter and Bertha Creech of Smithfield on Jan. 3, 1925, he spent his youth delivering newspapers and doing whatever odd jobs he could to help his family during the depression years. While caddying for a local lawyer on an otherwise uneventful day on the ninth hole at Holt Lake Golf Course, a worker came running out and announced that Pearl Harbor had just been bombed. Without hesitation and showing his lifelong patriotism and love of country, he enlisted, joining the U.S. Army 26th Yankee Division and became embroiled in the European theatre. He served as an infantryman in France and Germany, earning marksmanship awards and volunteering for many special combat missions.

On one of those missions, he was wounded by enemy shrapnel fire, leading to his capture. He was the only soldier to survive that mission on that Thanksgiving eve patrol. He was held as a POW in Germany for 154 days.  During his days as a prisoner of war, he befriended one of his German captors, Heinz Stechow. Jim always told Heinz “the Americans are going to win this war and when we do, you tell them that you befriended me and they will treat you well.” He gave Heinz his home address on a small scrap of paper to carry with him as proof. That friendship not only survived his days of captivity, but many years after the war was over they reconnected and Jim and Joyce went to Bremen, Germany to visit his lifelong friend who had become an accomplished artist. They remained in constant contact until Heinz’ passing. One thing you could always count on, when Jim Creech befriended you, it was for a lifetime. Mr. Creech was promoted to SSgt in November, 2007 and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and two Bronze Stars.

He and a new army enlistee buddy, Earl Schnabel, had met two sisters in Earl’s hometown of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Dad told Earl he was going to marry Joyce and that was all there was to it – love at first sight. They wrote letters, telegrams, post cards, whatever they could throughout his basic training and continued as he was shipped overseas to France and Germany and many places in between. Dad’s capture left her without contact and wondering if he was even still alive until she received a telegram that he was “missing in action.” Later her letters were returned “undeliverable” when she sent them to the POW camp where she was told he was being held. After Dad was liberated and returned to the states, he went straight to Pennsylvania and they walked several miles to the magistrate’s office in Allentown and were immediately married.

That marriage has lasted 73 years of devotion to each other and they raised three daughters together. Dad always said that he would never be cold or go hungry again after his POW days, and always wanted everyone around him to have enough to eat. At each meal for the rest of his life, even if Mom had fixed his very favorite meal, he would always leave a little bit  of food on his plate and would tell you it was ”for the prisoners.”

After surviving POW camp, he returned to civilian life and began his career, appropriately enough in the grocery business. He worked with Colonial Stores, Clark’s, Piggly Wiggly, Big Star and Grand Union stores, striving for better opportunities. Starting out as a  meat cutter, he always gave attention to each and every customer request. He was a true “company man” and labored long hours to have the best meat case of any store around while constantly striving to keep his gross margins the highest of any store every week. It was a sense of pride and accomplishment for him just like everything he did in life. He rose through the ranks to become department manager, district manager; Transferring many times, uprooting his life and family to pursue opportunities to better their lives at other stores, other states, finally retiring as division meat merchandising manager in the Raleigh division.

Life with Dad was never dull, and afforded his children the opportunity to meet many of the colorful characters he encountered in this career. How many kids can say they met the original “Little Oscar” and rode in the original Oscar Meyer Weinermobile, or sat on the tall shoulders of Benny Reynolds, the 1961 All Around World Champion Cowboy, or Miss America 1963 and other local “beauty queens” that were invited to the new store openings throughout the years. Life with Dad was always fun and interesting and offered new adventures on a regular basis.

After retirement, he put the same total commitment into his new lifestyle. He was regularly asked to speak to area school classes and assemblies about his wartime experiences. He felt this to be a strong calling for he believed that real history, especially regarding WW II, is no longer being taught in schools and that if people never learn the real truths of war, they are doomed to repeat the same mistakes. He often received many letters back from the students with poignant questions and comments that made him realize just how important it was for him to pass this knowledge along to younger generations.

He was interviewed many times by print and TV reporters who wrote articles for newspapers in North Carolina and also in Joyce’s home state of Pennsylvania, and he appeared on special interest broadcast television programs. One such TV program was “Primetime,” a weekend community affairs program hosted by Ervin Hester, another lifelong friend. Ervin met Dad in the early ‘50s when there were not many job opportunities for a young black man in their small town. Dad gave Ervin his first job working with him at the grocery store in Oxford. Ervin said that Dad and Mom were the first white people to let them eat with them at their kitchen table, something he never forgot and retold many times over during his lifetime.  Ervin credited Dad with giving him opportunity and purpose, and he went on to become the first African-American newscast anchor in the Southeast for WTVD in the 1970s and would later be inducted into the NC Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 1996 — the first African-American to receive that honor. He visited with Dad at least once or twice a year throughout his life and in his later years he had his daughter bring him to visit because he was no longer able to drive himself for health reasons. He never missed a chance to tell Dad what an impact he had on his life and remained another lifelong friend until his passing just a few months ago.

Dad embraced hobbies with newfound zest since he finally had time to “actively relax” in retirement.  He and Mom would walk a mile or more each day even into his late 80s. He would stop off at neighbor’s houses to carry the newspapers from the driveway up to the doorway, or roll the trash bins back to the house, or numerous other small but considerate gestures. He would stop and share a kind word or concern, and since they moved from the neighborhood into a retirement community, the residents still continue to ask about him and send him their best wishes.  He particularly enjoyed spending time talking “war stories” with his neighbor, Tim Shermer, and his son, Chase. Tim was instrumental in helping Dad finally receive his long overdue Army promotion to staff sergeant. His paperwork had been lost after his discharge and Dad had tried unsuccessfully for years to get it put through, but had given up. Tim took up the cause and on Nov. 12, 2007 Dad was finally presented with his stripes. Tim was not just another neighbor, but a lifelong friend and a Masonic brother.

Dad always loved being outside so gardening was one of his greatest passions. He always strived to have the biggest, tastiest and the first juicy ripe red tomato of the season. He happily labored long hours on end even into his late 80s, even in the hot summer weather, and amazingly, would never break a sweat. His large backyard garden was a source of personal pride for him. It was usually so prolific that he sold his excess produce to make some small spending cash, but moreover it gave him the opportunity to meet and converse with neighbors and also with perfect strangers who fast became new friends.  Always a salesman, and never wanting to let anything go to waste – a trait that was engrained in him from a childhood of the Depression – he would display his garden bounty of tomatoes, green beans, corn, okra, butter beans, and so much more, often have his “regulars” call him well before spring planting just to be sure they were on his “list” to let them know when a particular thing was available.

Wednesday was always “FISHING DAY” and he would meet up with George Murphy at Moore’s Pond. Dad learned the fine skills of fly fishing and that is where he would spend every Wednesday after his retirement.  They would plan their menus for fishing day luncheon each week and prepare a feast before spending the rest of the day catching crappie, bream and bass till the buckets were full and the sun was setting.  George honed his skills as cook on a Navy submarine in wartime and later running Murphy House and their luncheons were feasts to most people.  They would eat, talk, fish all day and just enjoy their friendship.  Dad even snagged “a big one” on a particular day when he caught George in the cheek with his hook during a cast! But mostly, he would bring home so many fish to fill the freezer, or just give away to the neighbors. In particular, he would call Ms. Elisabeth to come get fish which delighted them both… in the giving and the receiving. George and Dad’s fishing days were some of their very best days until Dad could no longer drive or go fishing. His buddy George visited him and they talked fishing until George’s sudden passing but it was another lifetime friendship.

Woodworking gave him great pleasure and he always strived for excellence in every project.  He would draw designs for a piece, then set out to create a “one of a kind” useful, practical item. He would create everyday things such as kitchen towel holders, napkin holders, fish scalers using wooden handles and bottlecaps, and wooden shelves to pass the time in his workshop.  But his creativity and skill came to light with some of his more endearing and creative works for his children and grandchildren.  He designed and built cradles for the birth of his grandchildren, built toys such as replica military jeeps and tanks and guns, handpainted in army green with great detail on each piece, and a dollhouse fit for a princess made for his granddaughter.

But one of his most memorable pieces was the one he crafted that gained him a nickname that stuck with him for the remainder of his life.  He designed and built a wooden riding rocking horse with yarn tail.  He cleverly hid it in a back room with a long string tied to it running down the hallway to the Christmas tree.  When young Justin followed the string down the hall and opened the door and saw it, he joyfully shouted out ‘HOSS” (he was still too young to pronounce horse) — he climbed on it and started rocking away, repeating over and over again, “HOSS, HOSS, HOSS.” So from then on, he was no longer Grandpa – now he was the one and only “HOSS”… and he remained Hoss for the rest of his life to family and friends alike… the name just stuck. He built many other wonderfully practical items for his and others’ homes, but none seem to express him and his love of creating things to please others than those he created for his grandchildren.

One of his most endearing traits was his love of telling jokes. During his working years, he would always come home with the jokes he had heard at the store or at the warehouse, and he had such a gift in re-telling them that always made them even more humorous than when he had first heard them.  On one particular occasion two of his brothers came to visit him. They sat on the porch and the joke telling began. For several hours they bantered back and forth non-stop to see who could tell the most and the best jokes. It was hilarious as they tried to outdo each other. But in the end, Dad bested them — both in number of jokes and best laughs. It was just another of his many gifts because he knew humor could always make any situation better.

If you took a moment today to view the table with Dad’s military memories on it, you already know what a dedicated patriot he was and remained throughout his life.  He always called himself “Lucky Jim” because he cheated death on so many occasions. He had pneumonia twice as a child and the doctors twice said he would not pull through. He contracted malaria as a young child playing in a mosquito-laden river as a small boy in Smithfield. He saw his army brothers killed standing right next to him, and survived the horrors of war. When he first realized he had to kill another human being as he stared down a German soldier and knew it was “him or me” – a decision and memory that would stay with him his entire life. He survived his days as a German prisoner of war. He survived so many situations that a lesser man never would have, and as he titled his memoir story, “I Lived to Tell About It.”  Dad never considered himself a hero, but a patriot that did his job to defend his country, protect his family and protect the American lifestyle we all enjoy.

His last few years suffering from the ravages of Alzheimer’s dementia took away so many of his memories of a life well lived.  But he shared so many of his life experiences with others that we all know the hero he really was, especially to his wife, three daughters and the countless people he encountered along the way.  He gathered lifelong friends like a bee gathers pollen, going from place to place, gathering the nectar of love and friendship and taking it back home to share with the hive, his family, his friends and his community.

He had a few favorite expressions that he used throughout life that I will share with you as closing thoughts…

…when life seemed to weigh heavily on him or others he loved, he would tell you…“that’s not today’s problem” and you immediately realized it wasn’t…

…when he took time to sit on the porch swing and gaze over the garden or watch the birds, horses and chickens while having  “Miller Time” after a hard day he would often say “it just don’t get any better than this”… and he truly meant it.

…when he felt abundantly blessed and it was a perfect day… he would exclaim “I wonder what the poor people are doing now”

…whenever you asked him how he was doing or feeling, even in his last days, he was always “okee dokee”

He always told us “growing old is not for sissies” but he showed us how to do it with grace. He knew that his wife and his three daughters – “Neenebelle”, “Jimbo” and “Jerico” would miss him terribly and hung on until he no longer could… and that is the true hero that I am proud to say was my father –

Anna ‘Ann’ Schweizer

Wake Forest

Anna “Ann” Schweizer, passed away on the morning of January 9, 2019. Ann passed away peacefully at Transitions Life Care in Raleigh.  Ann was 79 years old.

Ann was born on December 12, 1939, in the borough of Queens, New York. She was the youngest of seven children (Jack, Fred, Barbara, Katherine, Dorothy, and Fran), born to John and Barbara Holleritter, all of whom preceded her in death.

Ann liked to keep busy. In addition to raising three children, she worked as an ice cream store owner and operator, her last ice cream venture being Scoopy Doos Ice Cream in West Islip, New York.

After moving from New York to Red Lion, Pennsylvania in 2009, Ann eventually rented space at the Markets at Shrewsbury, where she primarily sold crocheted items that she personally made. Shortly after Ann’s retirement from the market, she moved to Wake Forest to be able to spend some time in a warmer climate.

Ann had a variety of interests. She loved to crochet, making afghans and baby blankets for friends and family. When she moved to North Carolina she insisted on bringing four shelving units of yarn with her, much to her son-in-law’s dismay. Ann also enjoyed taking care of her plants and watching the Hallmark Channel. She was “proficient” in the use of the iPhone, often accidentally texting pictures of floors or ceilings and claiming the phone was broken.

Ann was a devout Catholic who regularly attended services at St Elizabeth’s in Melville, New York and then St. Joseph the Baptist Catholic Church, New Freedom, Pennsylvania.

Ann’s passion was her family, all of whom survived her. She enjoyed taking care of her husband Walter, shopping with daughter Faith (spouse Bob), attending son Walter’s (spouse Michelle) stock car races, and attending daughter Ann Marie’s (soon to be spouse Keith) dance recitals and concerts. She adored her grandchildren, Taylor, Caden and Avery, and was very excited to learn that she had a new granddaughter due in Summer 2019.  Ann was also a lover of animals. She had a number of pets (too many to name) and loved her current grand-pups, Kabuki, Jeter, Buddy, and Bella.

A funeral service was held Saturday, January 12, 2019, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

Obituaries

Meara Eileen Hamlin

Youngsville

Meara Eileen Hamlin, 47, of Youngsville passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2019, at her home surrounded by her family. Meara was born in Riverside, California on September 15, 1971 to Florence Paula Dye and the late Michael Edward Larralde.

Meara was a very hard-working, strong, stubborn, funny, loving, creative, carefree, charming and compassionate person. She loved her family, friends and pets with her whole heart. She knew how to love unconditionally, and sought to share that love with all whom she met. She had the ability to make anyone feel comfortable, so they could just be themselves. She taught her children to be loving, always. She was artistic in many ways. She could draw, write  and her handwriting was so pretty! She loved to cook and serve others in this way. She invited you into her life and made you feel welcome. She could make people smile, even when she was in pain and sad.

Some of Meara’s favorite things were time with her daughters, time with Billy, being close to the water, reading, laughing, music, driving fast, getting her nails done, having friends over to cook for, sushi, In-N-Out, and artichokes.

She was witty and not afraid to laugh at herself. She loved to stick googly eyes in the most random places, leave notes for her loved ones, and send the silliest photos and gif’s via text. We don’t know what her last meal would have been, but we know that over the last year when she couldn’t eat she smiled and still remained positive during the joys of a good conversation over the meal. She enjoyed holidays and she worked hard to make sure her girls and family had a nice Christmas Eve and day, even though she was in pain and not feeling well. The time we all shared with her really was a gift, and our lives are richer because of her.

She was full of cheer and a merry spirit and it overflowed onto all who knew her.

To miss someone so much means they were extremely special, and we were blessed to have her in our lives. She is in our hearts forever and will always be missed. We celebrate her life and will cherish her presence that will live on in our hearts and her two amazing daughters, Shelby and Karsten.

The funeral was held Thursday, January 3, 2019, at Clancy Strickland Wheeler Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hamlin is survived by her daughters, Shelby Hamlin of Youngsville and Karsten Hamlin and fiancé, Andrew Love, of Youngsville; mother, Paula Dye of Raleigh; boyfriend, Bill Case of North Redington Beach, Florida; siblings, Kama Tucker and spouse, Kristy Norton, of Wilmington, Kyle Davis and spouse, Hannah, of Sacramento, Californa, Matt Larralde of Los Angeles, California, Katie Anderson of Raleigh and Bren Anderson of Durham; and grandparents, Bill and Kitty Brenneman of Wake Forest. She is preceded in death by her father, Michael Larralde.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, Head & Neck Cancer, CB #7295, UNC-CH, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-7295.

Raleigh

Ann Boykin Flynn, 87, of Raleigh peacefully left this life on January 6, 2019.

A native of Wilson, she was born June 22, 1931 to John Henry Boykin and wife, Julia Rountree Boykin. She attended Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, afterwards working for Carolina Telephone and Telegraph Co. and then The Wilson Daily Times. After moving to Raleigh in 1966, she worked with and retired from The News & Observer.

Ann was a beautiful, stealth, and spirited woman throughout her life, who like her mother loved people, her children and her grandchildren. She enjoyed life, she loved to dance and interestingly was voted by her Rock Ridge High School mates as “best dancer” and “most polite.” She was a reporter on her high school newspaper, liked sports, and played basketball in high school. We remember summers spending time outdoors at the ball park with our mother while she played on softball teams and was noted as a great pitcher.

She is survived by her son, Michael T. Flynn and wife, Connie, of Wake Forest; daughter, Deborah A. Flynn of Raleigh; daughter-in-law, Deborah H. Flynn; five grandchildren, Ashley, David, Laura, Trent and Victoria; along with her niece, Dr. Linda Burgess-Getts and husband, Al, all of Wake Forest; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles Boykin of Stantonsburg; along with many nieces, nephews and their children, all of Wilson.

Ann graciously walked into the arms of her parents, “Spinx” and “Julie” Boykin, grandparents Jonathan Rountree and Harriet Lucas Rountree, and also Woodson and Eveline Griffin Boykin; and too her great-grand parents, Council Boykin and Blessing Flowers Boykin. Importantly, she joined brothers, Hubert, Ollie, Charles and John; along with sisters, Hattie and Mary Boykin, all of Wilson; her husband, E.C. Flynn Jr. of Greer, South Carolina; and son, Randolph Dean Flynn of Wake Forest.

The visitation was held Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at Bright Funeral Home. The funeral service was held at Bright Funeral Home Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at 2 p.m. Interment followed at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Craig D. Creel, Esq.

Wake Forest

Craig D. Creel, Esq., who grew up in Las Vegas as a trail-blazing athlete, attorney, father and friend, died Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at home in Wake Forest after an arduous and courageous fight with brain cancer. He was 64.

The cause of death was a glioblastoma, but Craig fought cancer and other difficult illnesses his entire life. No one would have known this as he was “the healthiest sick person” one could ever know. Craig exhibited boundless energy;  his optimism and charm were infectious, noticeable to all upon his entrance into a room.

Craig was one of the best athletes Las Vegas produced, who as a child growing up in the 1950s and ‘60s had an almost maniacal passion for baseball, falling to sleep many nights listening to the Dodgers broadcast on his transistor radio.

Craig loved to practice until he perfected his skills: shooting, serving, pitching, hitting, throwing, putting, and chipping. He was an acclaimed pitcher, recruited by the Kansas City Royals out of high school to play catcher, Nevada’s number one-ranked high school tennis player, a member of the UNLV tennis team, the city’s Punt-Pass-and Kick winner, the annual Free Throw Shooter winner, a state basketball champion, and scratch golfer who was widely recognized as one of the best amateur golfers in Las Vegas. As a first-year baseball recruit at the University of Arizona, even Ted Williams told him to never change his swing!

If Craig’s notorious high school years as an impressive athlete did not precede him, more would have taken note of his high intellect. As a voracious reader from a young age, his library was impressive, his Bible study commendable, and his knowledge of history exemplary. He enjoyed high fantasy most of all and was a storyteller himself, having completed the beginnings of an adventure novel around the time his dream business, BrainTrust Tutors, was born. Craig was a beautiful writer who also taught English at UNLV and Sacramento State as well as Constitutional Law at Peace College.

Craig had a very successful career as a reputable trial attorney in the western United States. A graduate of the McGeorge School of Law in 1982, where he won the Mock Trial competition, he applied his intellect, humor, and dedication to helping hundreds of defendants as a Public Defender in Clark County, Nevada; as a medical malpractice attorney for St. Paul Insurance in Portland, Oregon;  and as a corporate and personal defense attorney in private practice in Las Vegas. Craig trained hundreds of attorneys in trial techniques, produced ethics courses, and was roundly respected in the Las Vegas legal community. He was admitted to practice law before the Nevada, California, and Oregon Supreme Courts. His appellate briefs continue to be taught at the UNLV School of Law.

As much as Craig loved to read, he arguably loved music even more. He could sing and entertained a lifelong study and admiration of great classical music and jazz. His favorite classical pieces were usually Russian, and the piano works of Rachmaninov always chief among them. He also had a special appreciation for “The Sultan of Swoon.” Having seen Sinatra in person many times, Craig maintained tremendous respect his whole life for Frank’s romantic style. Craig adored films and as he became sicker in life, spent more time appreciating his favorites such as the miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurty’s “Lonesome Dove,” Herman Wouk’s “War & Remembrance,” and Andrew Davies’ adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Little Dorritt. With his forever, adoring wife, Molly, they cherished Italian works of art such as the film Cinema Paradiso and the Young Montalbano series.

Early to rise, a quick wit, and armed with the independent spirit of a western cowboy, it was only natural that he was looked upon by many as a role model. The elder of five younger siblings — Curt, Cory, Christy, Clay, Carey — and father to five boys himself — Matthew, Alec, Trevor, Sean, and Ryan — he was at ease with children, dedicating much of his life to coaching and teaching youngsters. He helped numerous high school students earn Division I baseball scholarships, mentored his nieces and nephews, and founded his dream business, BrainTrust Tutors, to help all children reach their God-given potential. Opening a tutoring business was a two-decade vision which Craig finally realized in the Raleigh Triangle in 2006, also hometown to his father, Charles “Chuck” Creel of Chapel Hill.

Craig was a spiritual, contemplative, and god-fearing man who strived to reach his potential in all facets of life and impressed those around him of the nobility of such a struggle. His never-dying, conscientious resilience and optimism about life in the face of tremendous physical ailment and pain was a testament to his psychological fortitude and simple toughness in the face of hardship. He had a relationship with Jesus Christ and hoped to inspire his younger boys Alec and Matthew.Craig was also quite proud of his older boys Trevor, Sean, and Ryan.

He is survived by his loving wife Molly (Marguerite), his parents, Charles and Susann ‘Sue’ Creel, and six adorable grandchildren – Luke, Connor, Annique, Hayden, McKinley, and Sean Jr.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Craig’s name to the North Wake County Baseball Association: NWCBA, 1845 Grandmark  Street, Wake Forest, NC, 27587.
