Margaret Katherine Hoffmann

Raleigh

Margaret “Marge” Hoffmann died surrounded by family in her home at Springmoor Retirement Center in Raleigh. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York, Germany and in the Bronx, New York.

As a teen, she spent many afternoons and weekends working in her family’s delicatessen where she proudly made the world’s best potato salad. After high school, her family moved to Massapequa Park, New York and Marge took a job in New York City which required her to ride the Long Island Railroad daily. It was on this train that she made so many good friends and met the love of her life, Charles “Charlie” Hoffmann. She loved to tell about the time all her friends surprised her and Charlie with an engagement party on the train! The whole car was decorated and only their friends were allowed to enter and celebrate.

Marge and Charlie married in 1957 and moved into Charlie’s parents’ house with his mother, Elizabeth Hoffmann “Nana”, in Baldwin, New York. Nana lived with them for many years and helped cook and care for the five kids that Marge and Charlie had – Charlie, John, Thomas, Peter and Mary. Yes, Marge wasn’t going to stop having kids until she had a little girl – Mary. After the kids were grown and gone, Marge cared for Nana till she died.

In 1991, Marge and Charlie followed their kids south and moved to three acres in Wake Forest. They immediately became active members at the small St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. Marge and her friends started a ministry called Threads of Love which sews small stuffed animals for babies in the local hospitals’ NICUs. Marge was still sewing 200 of these animals a month until the day she died.

Marge and her group of friends from St. Catherine’s met weekly for breakfast and fellowship for 28 years as they watched their church grow and grow.

Marge’s greatest joy in life was her family – five children and 17 grandchildren. She loved unconditionally and was known to always say “Love you more.” At Springmoor, Marge was known as the “candy lady” and the “décor lady” – she always had a bowl of candy outside her door to share with others and she always had the most festive hall décor of anyone! Until the day she died, she worried about keeping the bowl full.

Marge is survived by her late son’s wife (Stacy) and their four kids; son, John (Alma) and their four kids; son, Thomas (Tracy) and their 3 kids; son, Peter (Ibby) and his 3 kids; and daughter, Mary (Randy) and their 3 kids.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie; her son, Charlie; her twin sister, Lillian and her older sister, Annie.

Marge lived for many years with congestive heart failure and for this reason, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Heart Association.

Perrin Young

Raleigh

In the early evening hours of May 5, 2019, Perrin Young slipped away from his earthly life into the arms of all who waited for him at heaven’s gate.  He was surrounded and held by his family during his unexpected transition.  It was with broken hearts we said goodbye but also with enormous pride in having been part of the life of such an exceptional  man.

A “prince of people,” Perrin made friends easily and kept lifetime loyalties close to his heart. Perrin was a respectful son and a loving husband who showed his pride for his wife every day. A precious “puppy daddy,” a trusted brother, a beloved and fun godfather, a proud uncle, and a loyal friend, Perrin was always there to talk, just listen, or help in any way and at any time. His long and successful sales career was a perfect fit for such a people person. No one took better care of his customers and company than Perrin. His passion for family, friends, and living was equally matched by his love of being a private pilot and all it encompassed, a 40-year love affair with aviation and his airplanes. He often commented on how many blessings came from his passion for flight and the friends he was able to meet by just doing what he loved. He earned his earthly wings years ago, and now he has been given his heavenly wings, a just reward for a life beautifully lived.

Perrin was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Brooks and Lucille (Perry) Young of Youngsville, and his adored “little puppy girl,” Chanel.

Also waiting at heaven’s gate for him were his “brothers of the heart” Horace Murphy of Youngsville and Mark Marsh of Anchorage, Alaska.

Perrin is survived by his devoted, loving wife and soulmate of 42 years, Debra Lancaster Young and his much loved second “little puppy girl,” Paris-Chanel; his brother, Wright Young and wife, Barbara, of Durham; his godchildren, Hayden Lancaster Roberts and Hadley Brynne Roberts of Raleigh, who were constant sources of pride and joy for him; his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lancaster Taylor and husband, Philip, of Raleigh; his best friends and other “brothers of the heart,” Billy McCombs of Raleigh and Dr. Herb Fuchs and wife, Dr. Mary Ann Fuchs, of Durham.  The care and compassion Herb and Mary Ann provided were instrumental in helping the family find the strength they needed. Heartfelt thanks from our entire family to them both.

Many fond nieces, nephews, and cousins, even special neighbors and their pets, will miss Perrin’s sweet light in their lives. To all his flying buddies, go take a flight in his honor: he would love that, and his spirit will be with you from takeoff to landing.  He enjoyed you all.

We want to acknowledge and thank all of the incredible Duke doctors and nurses for the exemplary love and care they afforded Perrin on this journey, as well as the essential support given to Debra. A special thanks goes out to Dr. Dan Mollin of Wake Internal Medicine not only for being a fabulous doctor to Perrin but also for years of  being his “buddy.”  Perrin appreciated every kindness in word and deed and made sure he verbalized his appreciation. He was so humbled by those who attended to him in the hospital and did a great job expressing his gratitude. His parents reared a true Southern gentleman, and he made them and his wife enormously proud every day of his life.

A gathering of friends and family to acknowledge Perrin’s passing and our loss will be held at North Ridge Country Club on Wednesday, May 22, in “The Ridge” from 6 to 8 p.m. A celebration of his life and a memorial service is being planned for a later date and will be published along with a list of organizations that Perrin was passionate about should anyone want to make a donation in his honor.

Anthony Casper Rudl

Youngsville

Anthony Casper Rudl passed away to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 4, 2019 after a sudden pulmonary embolism. He was married to Patricia Anne Rudl on April 16, 1966, and they just celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. He was a precious, devoted, loving, wonderful husband and a wonderful father to three daughters, Tanya, Heidi, and Tina, who are all married and have given us ten precious grandchildren.

Anthony was known as Tony to everyone. He was born in Somerset County, New Jersey on August 28, 1943. His papa, John Rudl Sr., was born in Austria-Hungary and came to America to become a citizen here in his early 20’s. His mom, Anna Kapp Rudl, also born in Austria-Hungary, came over with Tony’s older sister, Nancy. Tony’s mother passed away when he was only 2 years old. John Rudl Sr. started his business, John Rudl & Sons, Inc., in Glen Gardner, New Jersey when Tony and his two brothers, John Nicholas Rudl and John Rudl Jr., were young boys.

Tony attended the elementary schools and North Hunterdon Regional High School in New Jersey. He also took two years of evening business courses at Rutgers University in Princeton, New Jersey.  He attended Valley Forge Military Academy for one year when he was 16 years old. Eventually, when Papa John Rudl Sr. retired, Tony took over John Rudl & Sons, Inc. which he then renamed Rudl Fencing & Decking.

When we moved down to North Carolina in 1989, all of our daughters were in college. We brought down the manufacturing part of the business to Roanoke Rapids after selling the retail end of the business. When we moved to Danville, Virginia, we got out of the wood business and Tony worked at several other jobs. He truly was “the Jack of all trades”. It was like he could fix anything!

In 2007, we moved to Youngsville, and he began working with one of our sons-in-law, Greg Miller, who owns a trucking company called Strider Transportation Inc.

Tony was a warm, loving man, who was well-loved and respected by family, friends, and even acquaintances. He always had time to talk to someone, encourage them, or just make them feel good. He was a very spiritual man who served as an elder and deacon in every church we attended. He taught the Bible and helped many people. He was born again 45 years ago and walked a faithful life with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was always ready to share God’s loving Gospel message to others. God gave him a special, warm heart for people.

As his wife for over 53 years, he will always be the love of my life, best friend, a part of me, and the most wonderful husband, father, and grandfather that God ever created! He will be missed dearly, but we know that he is now with Jesus and our Heavenly Father, and we will be with him again one day. We have a close family and are thankful to God for each other. Although Tony’s passing was sudden, we will depend on our dear Lord’s help, guidance, and grace to continue our walk with Him.

Tony was survived by his wife, Patricia Anne Rudl;   daughter and son-in-law, Tanya and Michael Ovack with grandson, Jacob Ovack; daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Fred Zimmerman with grandsons, Karl, Kreg and Corey, and granddaughters, Bethany and Patricia; daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Greg Miller with grandson, Strider, and granddaughters, Grace and Emily; and two brothers,  John N. Rudl, of British Columbia, Canada and  John Rudl Jr. of Auburn, New York.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Benjamin Michael Ovack;  his parents, John Rudl Sr. and Anna Kapp Rudl; and a sister, Nancy Rudl  Errickson.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church.

Jeremy Butler Gould

Wake Forest

Jeremy Gould – referred to affectionately as “J. Gould” – knew how to bring out the best in people.

He did it at home with the love of his life, his wife Nicole, and six children.  He did it in the community as a coach of youth football and tee ball, and as a proactive member of such groups as the Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Pi Lambda Phi, and the East Carolina University Pirate Club.

He did it at his church – St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church – while spending time with his Teams of Our Lady prayer group and while guiding important fund-raising events such as the golf tournament and the church school’s annual gala.

He also did it professionally as a Senior Vice President/Partner at Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP), where he led a team that designed and furnished hotels around the country so those properties looked great for guests and performed well for owners.

Jeremy was all about relationships, especially his powerful spiritual relationship with God. He enthusiastically embraced his Catholic faith, fellowship, and values that are part of being “brother in Christ.”

Passionate commitment to excellence. That was the common quality in everything Jeremy did – and his passion was contagious.  His “can do” spirit, his generous personality, and his comfortable laugh all usually entered a room before he did.

On Thursday, May 2, Jeremy took those qualities with him as he left this earth and started his journey with God.  His big heart gave out as he was attending a hotel trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada while literally surrounded by the colleagues and the industry he loved.  But he died much too young and much too far from home.

Jeremy was born on January 2, 1971 in Raleigh, the first of two sons of Lindsey Marshall Gould and Jewelle Jackson Boone.  He earned his high school diploma at Raleigh’s Broughton High School in 1989 and his undergraduate degree at East Carolina University in 1994, a school he continued to love and passionately support long after graduation.

He was predeceased in death by both sets of his grandparents — Thomas and Martha Gould as well as J.B. and Blanche Jackson.

Surviving him are his wife, Nicole Rollins Gould; children, Brooke Lindsey, Ashlynn Grace, Anna, Jackson, Alexander, and Luke; his mother, Jewelle Jackson Boone, and stepfather, Bobby Boone, of Greenville; his father, Lindsey Marshall Gould, and stepmother, Phyllis Gould, of Raleigh; and his brother, Daniel Gould and his family, wife, Laurie, and their children, Daisy and Brodie, of Fuquay-Varina.  Also surviving are his stepbrother, Hill Boone of Carlsbad, California, and stepsister, Kathryn Boone of Raleigh.

Our lives are typically measured in years, but this grieving family prefers to measure Jeremy’s life in moments.  Endearing and enduring moments like joining Jeremy to cheer on his beloved ECU football team or the Duke basketball squad. Like enjoying fine food and fine friends at a backyard cookout. Like sitting around the fire pit at the family farm after catching his “big daddy bass” to share good jokes and great bourbon.

These moments and so many more fill our mental scrapbook of memories.  They fill our hearts with grateful joy.  And most recently, they fill our eyes with happy tears.

Jeremy was a common man who was uncommon.  His intensity inspired us.  His loyalty impressed us.  His knowledge dazzled us.  His wit charmed us.

He didn’t just think about doing things – he acted. And he packed more activities into every 24 hours than many of us hope to undertake in a week.

Just last month, he launched a new business partnership that offered new professional opportunity and new security for his family. His widow, Nicole, will now carry forward these big ideas and solid plans in a way that Jeremy would want – with passion and energy, and especially with courage and confidence.

Every day of life was an adventure for Jeremy – and he lived life fully, with a heart full of love.  No, every day did not smile on him – but he smiled on every day of life.

Now Jeremy has embarked on the greatest adventure of all, leaving us on earth and starting his journey with God.  Death ended his life, but death has not ended his relationship with those of us who knew him and who continue loving him.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Catholic School, 520 West Holding Avenur, Wake Forest, NC  27587.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

James ‘Jim’ Lehman

Wake Forest

It is with great sadness that the family of James “Jim” Lehman announces his passing on Wednesday, May 1, 2019.

Jim, affectionately known as Boo, is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane Donovan Lehman; his daughter, Liz Amend and her husband, Dan, of Wake Forest; his daughter, Anmarie Rose and her husband, Ryan, of Wayne, Pennsylvania; six grandchildren, Alex, Megan, Kate and Emily Amend and Mackenzie and Taryn Rose; his sisters, Norma Hall of Exton, Pennsylvania and Emer Chapman; 26 nieces and nephews; and 22 great-nieces and great-nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved brother, Edward Lehman. He loved everyone unconditionally and was proud to be part of such a large circle of family and friends.

Jim grew up in Landsdowne, Pennsylvania, attending Landsdowne-Aldan High School and running track where he held a 1-mile run record. Jim served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962, working in Radar Relay. He went on to study mathematics and received a Bachelor of Science from West Chester State College and a Masters Degree from Lehigh University. He had a career as an actuary, which culminated in becoming a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries. After retirement, he devoted life to his 3 G’s: his Girls, his Grandchildren & Golf!

Jim appreciated life’s simplicities, including the great outdoors and time with family. He spent many years fishing the Quabbin Reservoir in Massachusetts with his brother. He took any opportunity to golf, and he was always ready to attend a performance at the Carolina Opry. Over the years, he honed a bedtime repertoire that he sang with love to his daughters and grandchildren. He enjoyed talking with his nieces and nephews, passing on his love for mathematics, and convincing the next generation to study actuarial science (we’re still waiting!).

Jim was a kind and generous person who was always willing to help and share with others. He was a role model as an upstanding citizen who believed in doing the right thing for the good of everyone. His memory will be cherished dearly by all who loved him.

Carol Green Cass

Wake Forest

“Carol has died. Car for sale.”

That is the obituary that Carol Ann Green Cass wrote for herself. But her family could not let that be the end of the story.

Carol, 74, a resident of Wake Forest, died on April 30, 2019 in Raleigh of complications from cancer. She was born on December 14, 1944 in Panama City, Florida, the oldest child of Jay Robert Green and Ruth Buresh Green. Carol grew up in Charlotte, graduating from Myers Park High School in 1962. She attended Meredith College for a time and years later, while working and a single mom, Carol obtained her degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Carol possessed both stunning beauty and a towering intellect. Throughout her life, she mastered a number of fields, including owning her own mortgage brokerage, working in real estate and insurance sales, book distribution, as a paralegal, and managing a sound studio. For the past 19 years, she served as part of the Decedent Care Team at Duke University Hospital in Durham.

Carol was a force of nature. During the 1980’s, she was life of the party for her “KDNA” social circle in Charlotte, and over the years, her creative spirit shown in mischievous ways: from signing Liz and Robb’s school physician forms with the name “P.D. Trician,” eagerly confronting parents of loud toddlers in restaurants, haggling with the Christmas tree salesman only to post-date the check for a year later, or concealing the real reason her mother’s church circle loved the meatloaf containing special “oregano” that somehow found its way into the freezer. Carol’s acerbic wit spared no targets, her “dingy” martini recipe perplexed many a waiter, and holding court with her cousins at Green family reunions always reinvigorated her eccentric charm. The family marveled at how Carol’s crafty stubbornness was outmatched only by her capacity to hold a grudge over the most trivial of blunders. But she loved animals at least as much as people, readily worked two jobs when needed to support her children, and woe be unto the school administrator if Carol felt her kids were slighted.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sandra G. Tamplin. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth C. “Liz” Stafford (Mark) of Winston-Salem; her son, Robert C. “Robb” Cass, Jr. (Sherrie) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Andrew G. Stafford of Harrisonburg, Virginia, Sydney C. Cass of Wilmington, William R. “Will” Stafford of Winston-Salem and Tyler G. Cass of Raleigh; her brother, Michael A. Green of Kernersville; nephews, John L. Capes (Vickie) of Jamestown, Bradley M. Green of Vale and Frank H. Tamplin Jr. of Charlotte; and niece, Laura G. Skvoretz (Chris) of Huntersville.

A celebration of Carol’s life took place Thursday, May 9, 2019, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Carol’s memory be made to Transitions Life Care of Raleigh, www.transitionslifecare.org.

Mary-Paige Kendall Merical

Raleigh

Mary-Paige Kendall Merical, 17, passed away Friday, April 26, 2019, at James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital in Greenville. She was born July 7, 2001 in Charlotte.

Passionate about everything she became involved in, Paige spent most of her time and energy focused on family and friends. She had an infectious smile and laughter that would light up every room she was in. You could always find her in the stands cheering on the Wake Forest High School Cougar football team. Paige also played softball, loved music and going to concerts. She was so happy to be able to drive and once she got her license her foot never came off the gas pedal. She used that newfound freedom to take her to her part-time job at Freddy’s in Wake Forest.

Obituaries

Eleora Davasha Toomey

Wake Forest

Eleora Devasha Toomey passed into God’s Glory on April 26th, 2019. She led an extraordinary life by any definition.

She pulled entire groups of people together to fight for a common goal. She weaved community by bringing together people that would have never met without her presence. Though she was non-verbal if you took the time to learn her language she spoke so loudly and clearly and with such spirit that all one could do was smile, laugh and nod. Her bright smile would light up a room, in that old cliché, but could also send your spirit soaring when you least expected it. Her laugh was infectious, but it was so much so that one would find oneself not only laughing along, but laughing to the point of joyous tears.

Though she was non–mobile, she mobilized people to assist her and each other. Her will power and incredible strength were spoken in reverent tones in both the medical community and between all of those that had the pleasure of being around her. Uncounted number of doctors have proclaimed uncounted times over the years words to the effect that they can’t believe she has “fought through” some new difficulty. She was sweet and kind and strong and filled to the brim with pure will power.

Nothing thrilled her like going very, very fast with the wind in her face and whipping through her hair. Whether that was on her special bike down the greenway, a boat across the water or being pushed as fast as possible across the green field while playing Miracle League baseball – it did not matter as long as she was going fast.

Nothing moved her like music – usually of the very fast, very intense beat variety. As long as there were driving chords, she would dance and dance as long as the music would last. She would anticipate the downbeat to catch her breath. She taught us all to dance with her and like her controlled, but uncontrolled, passionate and fiery and joyous.

Music filled our house like bird song fills an early morning spring time forest. Nothing calmed her like being in the water. Floating in the pool or sinking waist deep into a lake was pure perfection for her soul.

As the years have passed, her medical conditions have gotten more complicated and difficult. She was born with an incredibly rare genetic condition. So rare, in fact, that she was the only one in the world with her genetic combination. In a world where everyone is unique, she was a singularity. She provided incredible hugs, intense soul-searching stares and smiles that could turn an otherwise dour day into an emotional confection. Our every day was made better by her. All I can do is hope that we made her every day just as great.

She is survived by her Grandfather, Ron Kirschbaum; Grandmother, Nancy Toomey; her parents, Sean and Cindy; and her brother, Cullen. Also, by her uncles, aunts and cousins. And by so many amazing friends that had the privilege of knowing her. She is now in the company of loved ones including her Grandmother Honey Kirschbaum, Grandfather Donald Toomey and countless Toomey’s, Kirschbaum’s, Sagers, Saunders, Martin’s, Paes’ and Goode’s.

Steven “Stevie” Allan Acord

Youngsville

It is with great sadness that the family of Steven “Stevie” Allan Acord announces his passing on Friday, April 26, 2019, at a young age of 48. He was a much loved husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. Stevie will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 30 years (LAMFY), Debbie, and his children, Lindsay, Eric Williams (Amber), and Matthew Williams, along with one grandson Nicholas Russo. He will be greatly missed by his parents, Delano “Dean” and Wilma (Murphy) Acord of Franklinton; brothers, Tim (Theresa) Acord of San Jose, California, Gary (Kim) Acord of Rolesville, and Darrell (Lori) Acord of Franklinton; along with many many other family members and friends. He loved everyone unconditionally and was proud to be a part of such a large circle of family and friends. Stevie shared an especially close relationship that he cherished with Ed and Becky Donahue.

Stevie never met a stranger. He devoted a great portion of his life helping others and took great pride in the way he lived his life by “paying it forward”, taking care of his “karma”, and always trying to do the right thing. He was an amazing friend and was happy to lend a hand and help out in any way he could. He loved being “just a phone call away” to everyone. To know him was to love him.

Stevie was past Master of Rolesville Masonic Lodge #683 where he was a Brother for nine years. He was also a member of Zebulon Shrine Club for three years. Some of Stevie’s favorite times were spent participating in Masonic and Shriners events and functions. He was a true Brother to all and was proud to live a life that reflected the meaning of Brotherhood.

His happiest times were spent camping at the Outer Banks, fishing, hunting, and hanging out with his best buddy Leo (dog). Stevie and Leo spent many hours taking rides on the golf cart and riding in Poppy’s big truck. His most cherished times were spent with those he loved. He truly enjoyed the simple pleasures in life.

In lieu of flowers the family has suggested donations be made to the foundations that were very near and dear to Stevie’s heart, The Masonic Home for Children in Oxford, NC, or The Shriners Hospital for Children.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at Bright Funeral Home. Immediately after the visitation there will be a Celebration of Life, to include a Masonic Memorial, at 6 p.m. at Zebulon Shrine Club, 1201 West Gannon Avenue, Zebulon.

Ernest Dysart Baker

Raleigh

Ernest Dysart Baker, affectionately known as Ernie or Big EZ, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 26, 2019, following a nine-year battle with Multiple Myeloma. At age 67, surrounded by his family, he crossed the finish line and is now celebrating his eternal life in heaven, free from cancer.

Ernie was born in Buffalo, New York on December 31, 1951 to Lewin and Erna Baker. His family moved from New York to Ormond Beach, Florida, when he was young, and he was a graduate of Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from Florida Technological University, now known as the University of Central Florida, his beloved alma mater. This is where he met “the gorgeous girl in the pink bikini,” the love of his life, Linda Stout.

The majority of Ernie’s career was spent as an executive with IBM, which brought him first to Boca Raton, Florida, and later to Raleigh, North Carolina. After 20 years with IBM, he served as CEO for a number of start-up technology software companies in Research Triangle Park.

Ernie believed in living life to the fullest and enjoyed the great outdoors by playing racquetball, camping, going deep sea fishing, hiking in the woods, snorkeling, and traveling the world with his family. He also enjoyed woodworking and put his engineering skills to use in the building of all sorts of things. His greatest joy was spending time with loved ones, ranging from his parents to his grandchildren.

Being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma at the age of 58 forced Ernie into an early retirement, which allowed him to spend much more quality time with his whole family. He filled his days creating precious memories, including long walks with Linda, DIY projects with his children, and tickle fights with his grandchildren. He survived two stem cell transplants at Duke Hospital’s Adult Bone Marrow Clinic and endured numerous treatment regimens and surgeries, all with such courage and strength as he trusted the Lord and his amazing team of specialists. He truly “learned to be content in all circumstances” (Philippians 4:11-13), and somehow managed to smile and tell jokes through it all. Loved by many, his presence is deeply missed, but we know that this world is not our home, and we will be reunited one day in heaven, our eternal home.

Ernie is survived by his wife of 43 years, Linda; his daughter, Tara Dew and her husband, Jamie; his daughter, Leah Guenther and her husband, Kyle; his son, Nick Baker and his wife, Anne; his grandchildren, Natalie, Nathan, Samantha and Samuel Dew, Emery and Will Guenther; his sister, Sherry Cato and her husband, Bobby; his brother, Marvin Baker and his wife, Laurie; and his mother-in-law, Ginny Stout. He was loved by a host of nieces and nephews, and of course his English Springer Spaniel, Lucy.

A celebration of his life will be held at Bay Leaf Baptist Church, 12200 Bayleaf Church Road, Raleigh, North Carolina, on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ernie’s memory to the International Myeloma Foundation (www.myeloma.org).

Robert J. Loomis

Rolesville

Robert J. Loomis, 47, died on February 12, 2019 from a heart attack.

He was born May 7, 1971 in Cooperstown, New York, and had resided in North Carolina since 1999. He worked as a Network Engineer  and operated his own structured cabling business.

Rob never sought praise and he was never one to boast. He just went on quietly working for the ones he loved the most. His dreams were seldom spoken, his wants were very few and most of the time his worries went unspoken too.

Through all the storms of life, he served as our firm foundation. Whether the times were good or bad, we could rely on him.  He was one of his family’s greatest blessings and the man that the children called Dad.

He is survived by his wife, Lauren; his son, Joseph; and his twin daughters, Sophia and Gabriella.

A private memorial service will be held for the family.

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

– Romans 8:38-39

Elizabeth Shirley (Gibson) Baumgardner

Wake Forest

Elizabeth Shirley (Gibson) Baumgardner ended her journey of 99 years on this earth on April 20, 2019. She began her life’s adventures on May 6, 1920 in Greensburg, Kansas with parents Abraham and Amy (Wilder) Gibson and brother Robert (now 101).

Soon after attending Fort Hays, Kansas College, Elizabeth was working in Macon, Georgia in the Appleton Home for Girls, where she met and married Kenneth Baumgardner (1916-2002) in 1942. They had three children, Kenille, Darrel, and Vivian (Lord); three grandchildren, Branson Prosser, Alana Lord and Jeremy Baumgardner; and three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Julian and Dylan Prosser.

Elizabeth arrived in Gainesville, Georgia in 1963. She moved to Wake Forest in 2008 where she enjoyed concerts and ballets with her daughter, Kenille, and the many activities of her great-grandchildren until her death. She was also known to her fellow residents at The Lodge as the puzzle lady and pool shark.

After receiving her master’s degree in special education from the University of Georgia, Elizabeth taught for a while, but then her passion found its niche in tutoring older students, especially from different cultures. During this time she joined a writer’s club where her prolific writing of poetry and prose won her many awards. Her perfectionism was on display in the many outfits she sewed, not only for her family and friends, but in the many costumes she designed and created for local theater, often acting in these plays herself. The smell of homemade bread or cookies was always a part of the homes in Texas, New York, Oklahoma, Maryland, and then Georgia. Elizabeth remained especially interested in theater in addition to the Conflict Resolution Academic Programs at Brenau College.

Elizabeth was one whose love of family, friends and students was exemplified, not in words, but in her unselfish dedication towards encouraging all those who knew and loved her to go beyond the expectation of others, and reach for the impossible that has no limitations.

Memorial gifts may be given to the Elizabeth Baumgardner Peace Award for Mediation given at Brenau University, Attn: Matt Thomas, 500 Washington Street, SE, Gainesville, Georgia 30501 or on line at giving.brenau.edu/give-online/

Ian Frazier Lewis

Wake Forest

Ian Frazier Lewis, 18, died Friday, April 19, 2019. He was born September 23, 2000 in a laid-back, mellow style, which proved true to his personality. Ian was the third of four children, and adored his siblings. He was a senior at Wake Forest High School and had plans to study business, as he enjoyed following the stock market with his father.

Ian was a wonderful young man with a zest for life. Always independent, he would set goals for himself and work to achieve them without fanfare. He was a Boy Scout with Troop 500 for many years and liked hiking and camping with his scout buddies. He enjoyed playing baseball, but his true love was soccer. He played on teams at Wake Forest High School, and on his NCFC team, the Condors, for 16 seasons. He cherished the bonds he made with his teammates.

Ian had a way with animals and was known in the family as the cat whisperer. He enjoyed spending time with family on the waterslide and beach at the family condo. He had a passionate love for his family and friends and was fiercely protective of them. He loved hip-hop music and constantly tried to convert his mother to the genre by quoting lyrics. He would often make his family laugh by being goofy, and randomly breaking into dance to some song only he could hear. He was a joy to his family and a joy to his many friends, and his absence leaves a hole that cannot be filled.

Ian is survived by his parents, Kendall and Missy Lewis; a sister, Hanna Lewis; brothers, Erik and Payden Lewis; uncles, Greg Bartholomew and wife, Diana, Sherrill Bartholomew and wife, Ginger, Lee and Stephen Lewis; aunts, Lisa Bartholomew and husband, Mark Willing, Pat Jenks and husband, Ronald, and Kerry Lewis; cousins, Gregory Bartholomew (Susan), Christopher Bartholomew (Hilary), Jackson, Marshall, and Walker Willing, Hunter Jenks (Betsy), Parker and Taylor Jenks, Luke and Allison Bartholomew, Summer Ryan (Josh), Graham Fuller (Susan), Cameron and Marcus Dearstyne, Cate Critcher, and Sarah Long (Colin), and multiple precious little cousins.

Roger Leslie King

Wake Forest

Roger Leslie King, a native of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away peacefully in his home in Wake Forest on April 10, 2019, after a seven-year battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his wife of thirty-five years, Karen; his two daughters, Tessa Baker and Molly King; his son-in-law Nathan Baker; and his granddaughter, Chyella Baker; as well as his brother, Randall King; his sister, Betty Marie (“Ree”) Westfahl; and his brother-in-law, Butch Westfahl, and their children and grandchildren.

Roger and Karen’s marriage was a testimony to God’s faithfulness. Their life together, including Roger’s final struggle with Alzheimer’s, was a daily demonstration of the love and forgiveness only possible through Jesus Christ.

Roger worked as draftsman throughout his career and delighted in explaining why buildings were built this way or that. He worked with several engineering firms in Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Fernandina, as well as at Rayonier Advanced Materials. He was a talented woodworker, sailing enthusiast, and avid bike rider.

Roger and Karen were long-standing members of First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach where Roger served as a deacon, nursery worker, and as a crew chief on World Changers mission trips.

We’ll miss our Roger! This was a man who would lift his daughter on his shoulders to put the star on top of the Christmas tree – even when she was 10 years old! He was an amazing daddy of daughters, allowing his girls as toddlers to fix his hair and dress him up. Even into his final weeks, he delighted in his granddaughter’s laughter.  Roger was one of the quietest and most tender-hearted men we’ve ever known. In 1996, Jesus saved that quiet, tender heart, and Roger gave his life to Christ. We know he’s in heaven now, and can’t wait to join him there!

The family received friends at their home in Wake Forest on Saturday, April 13. There was also a memorial service on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Kevin Martin McMahon

Wake Forest

Kevin Martin McMahon, age 80, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 16, 2019, at WakeMed in Raleigh due to complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Kevin was born on December 30, 1938 in Stretham, England, to Martin McMahon and Mary (O’Meara) McMahon. His first childhood memories were of the nightly bombing campaigns carried out by Nazi forces during the Blitz of London in World War II.

In an effort to escape the economic hardships brought upon England following World War II, he and his family immigrated to the United States when he was 14, settling in Paterson, New Jersey. Kevin spent 1961-1962 serving with the United States Army’s 7th Infantry Division in Korea, but received early honorable discharge after his only brother, Tommy, was tragically killed in training while preparing to deploy to Vietnam with the 101st Airborne.

Shortly after returning home, Kevin started a 28-year career with the New York City Police Department, first as a subway patrolman and eventually retiring as a lieutenant. He was inducted to the NYPD’s Honor Legion in 1984 for “acts of extraordinary bravery performed in the line of duty at imminent and personal danger to his life.” Kevin also spent a brief part of his NYPD career at John Jay College as a police sciences instructor.

In addition to Paterson, New Jersey, Kevin also spent part of his life living in Pearl River and Valley Cottage, New York, and eventually retired to Clearwater, Florida.

Kevin loved his children and grandchildren, the Catholic Church, military history, ballroom dancing, classical music, and coffee. He is survived by his loving children, Stephen and Anne-Marie, and his loving grandchildren, Anthony and Christopher.

Kevin’s final resting place is Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made on Kevin’s behalf to The ALS Association (alsa.org/donate).

He will be forever missed.

Judith ‘Judy’ Ann Caprioli

Wake Forest

Judith “Judy” Ann Caprioli, 79, died Thursday, March 7, 2019. She was born December 8, 1939 to the late Harry and Gladys Wiese Nelis.

Judy grew up in West Allis, Wisconsin and lived a few houses away from the man she would later marry.  Judy had no interest in Bob until his best friend, Judy’s brother Jimmy, set them up on a blind date. After that date they were inseparable. Throughout their years together they moved from Wisconsin, to Texas, to Georgia and then North Carolina. Their plans to retire in Wisconsin were scrapped after spending the winter.

Judy was an active member of Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church until she was bedridden and unable to attend mass. She was grateful to church members who would come and visit her.

Judy very much enjoyed her time with her family be it family get-togethers’ at home or camping. She always had baked goods available and loved to make pineapple upside down cake for her husband Bob.  Judy loved to knit and made afghan blankets for all of her children and grandchildren.  Judy also loved to play cards and socialize along with gardening.

Judy was preceded in death by a brother, James Nelis, and a sister, Katherine Nelis

Judy is survived by: her husband, of 55 years, Robert “Bob” Caprioli; her four children, Michael Caprioli and his wife, Denise, and their children, Christina Caprioli and Matthew Caprioli, Theresa Caprioli and her children, Mandi Solomon, Jay Melton Jr., Laci Melton and Christopher Melton; her three great-grandchildren, Jay Melton III, Kyleigh Melton and James Solomon Jr., Mark Caprioli and his wife, Lisa, and children,  Aiden Caprioli, Holden Caprioli, and Micki Caprioli
