Michael James Keith

Wake Forest

Michael James Keith, 71 and a proud veteran of the United States Army, unexpectedly passed away in the early hours of April1, 2024 from natural causes. The oldest son of Martin Keith and Catherine Burke, he was born on September 28,1952 in Nome, Alaska. The story goes that his mother was outside watching the picturesque Northern Lights when she went into labor with him, and if you know Mike you know he had a ‘fair for the dramatics’… This may have begun from the start.

He spent time in his early years being “abused by nuns” (his words, not mine) in Catholic school, where he survived with “only minor scars from their rulers” (again…his words, not mine). Mike graduated high school in 1971 from Eastman High School in East Wenatchee, Washington. He then continued his education at Central Washington University where he graduated in 1976 with a degree in Law & Justice.

His passion for his country and others, as well as his strong moral compass, led him to begin an impressive military career with the United States Army, where he served as a CID Special Agent, a Military Policeman, and Warrant Officer before being honorably discharged in 1987. Following that, he took several civilian positions within the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division and later continued an expansive career in finance and private investigation.

He was proceeded in death by his Father, Martin Lowell Keith, and his mother, Catherine Elizabeth Burke. As his mother Katie was the second youngest of thirteen children, we know he was warmly welcomed by numerous family members and is now forever celebrating with them at the Great Burke Family Reunion in the sky.

He is survived by his wife Rhonda Jean Keith, his younger brother Sean M. Keith, his two daughters Kat Smith and Meghan H. E. Keith, and many other descendants of both the Burke and Keith families.

He will be remembered for his generosity and his desire to help others, as well as his storytelling. To know Mike was to know about a lot of topics you have never thought about before… and will probably never think about again. But his stories and his history were important to him and his family, and we hope they will be passed down to future generations to come. Were they all true, or heavily elaborated for dramatic value… those earthside will never truly know.

One of Michael’s final goals was to buy Rhonda and himself a forever home. They found their dream house by the pond and moved in last fall. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to “The Miracle House”. https://angelinkweb.page.link/A9m6N45pSzJ1VjBh9

Wake Forest

Glenn Roger Allen, of Wake Forest, peacefully passed away in his sleep on April 1, 2024. Born on January 7, 1939, in Neuse, North Carolina, Roger was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His life exemplified the values of hard work, passion, and dedication, starting with his education at Millbrook High and Hargrave Military, followed by further studies at East Carolina University.

Roger was a man of many talents and interests, known as a jack of all trades. As an Amateur Radio Operator with the call sign KD4MYE, he connected with many, making friends all over the country. As a skilled pilot, he enjoyed flying with his family and friends, including taking “roller coaster rides” in the air with his children, nieces, and nephews. A proficient builder, he handcrafted several homes, and his love for automobiles led him to meticulously restore his cherished 1978 Jeep and maintain a collection of classic cars. Roger had a passion for horses, finding joy in trail riding and competing in events like barrel racing. He treasured time spent with his friends in Emerald Isle. Additionally, Roger served as a pyrotechnician, bringing joy to the town of Wake Forest with his fireworks displays.

Professionally, Roger was the President and COA of Neuse Plastics, INC., dedicating himself to the success of his family’s farm and businesses, including Allen Auto Sales and Allen Lumber Company.

Above all, Roger’s greatest happiness stemmed from the love of his family. He was a loving father to Steven Allen, Glenn Allen, and Karen Allen Ray, a proud grandfather to Matthew Ray, Ashlynn Ray, and Austin Allen, and a devoted husband to the late Christine Humphry. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Hickman Allen and Gladys Holden Allen, and his sister, Elaine Raynor. He cherished the memory of his sister and found comfort in the companionship of his brother Dan Allen and beloved sister-in-law, Lou Allen. Roger held a special place in his heart for his son-in-law, John, and daughter-in-law, Melissa, cherishing the bond they shared with his family.

Roger lived a fun, adventurous life, always ready with a story or a joke to tell while marching to the beat of his own drum. He showed us his playful spirit by departing on April Fool’s Day, leaving us with a bittersweet smile and countless cherished memories. His kindness and generosity knew no bounds, as he was always willing to lend a helping hand. Though he may be gone, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.

It was known by all that she had an unbounded love and faith in God.  Eldred was a member of Youngsville Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Ladies Adult Sunday School, and was involved with several church groups.

She was a frequent visitor to a local daycare to hold and nurture babies. She made “busy aprons” for dementia patients and breast cancer pillows. Esmond Worley Massey

Wake Cross Roads Community

Esmond Worley Massey, 84, of the Wake Cross Roads Community, passed away on the evening of Saturday, March 30, 2024. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Margaret and V.V. Massey, and was a longtime member of Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church. Worley graduated from Rolesville High School in 1958. He worked hard his entire life, but made sure to enjoy every second along the way. Before settling in at Marshall Oil Company, Worley was a brakeman on the railroad, a driver at Pine State Creamery and helped his uncle in the HVAC business, eventually running his own HVAC business. He worked at Marshall Oil Company for 26 years and was the owner of Wake Tire for over 36 years.

Worley was passionate about traveling. He visited almost every state in the US by way of his 1960’s Dodge Travco motor home, with family members and friends in tow. He enjoyed telling the story of meeting Elvis at Graceland on July 4, 1969, during one of his many adventures. Nothing made Worley happier than going on a cruise with anyone who wanted to join, but particularly his family and close friends. Worley cruised all around the world and gave new meaning to the phrase, “never met a stranger.”

Worley loved animals of all kinds, but was particularly fond of his dogs, horses, and baboons. He rescued his first baboon, Scoopy, from an exotic animal owner in Concord, NC. This was just the beginning of what would become Worley and Nancy’s long history of adopting animals in need of a new home.

While his hobbies are too numerous to mention here, he was an avid barefoot water skier, enjoyed snow skiing and riding motorcycles, flew a helicopter and owned a number of hovercrafts.

There was nothing more important to Worley than his family. While his love for his family was evident throughout his entire life, he felt like he had won the lottery when his family moved out to join him and Nancy on what became the family compound.

He will be remembered for his contagious smile and extraordinary sense of humor that could light up a room and provoke uncontrollable laughter, even at the most inappropriate times.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 4, 2024 at Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Strickland Massey; son, Allen Massey and wife, Lorie; grandchildren, Will (Julia) and Lee (Jesse); great-grandchildren, Will, Jaxton, Worth, and Ridge (on the way); siblings, Betty Lou Horton and Robert Massey (Joyce); sister-in-law, Sandra Massey; “adopted sister” Mary Lou Penny (Tom). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Victor Massey and Marvin Massey.

Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Wake Cross Roads Baptist Church, 3328 Forestville Road, Raleigh, NC 27616.

Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, 2024, at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 405 S. Main St., Wake Forest, NC 27587. (919-556-5811)

Sheila Irene Wooten Brown

Wake Forest

Sheila Irene Wooten Brown, age 60, went home to be with the Lord on February 24, 2024, after a sudden illness.

Sheila was known for her loving, thoughtful, outgoing personality and her joyful spirit. She never met a stranger and was always willing to use her gifts to meet the needs of others. Her infectious smile and hugs were known far and wide.

Everyone knew when Sheila Brown was in the building. She filled up every room she was in, and her light made a difference. Sheila’s greatest pride and joy were her two daughters, Anna and Lydia. Her devotion to her girls was unfailing. She was never without a kiss for a booboo, a sweet treat, or a giant bow to put in their hair. She loved caring for her girls, reading to them, singing with them, doing crafts and puzzles with them, and making them pose for millions of pictures! She was happiest when both her girls were home with her and Tom. A gifted educator, Sheila had a long career as a preschool teacher. “Miss Sheila’’ taught at Millbrook Baptist Preschool for almost two decades.

She worked at Wake Forest Baptist Preschool WEE Care for the past two and a half years. She played an instrumental role in enhancing the curriculum there and took great pride in her contributions to the school’s art show. Sheila had a gift of creating personal relationships with children and parents alike. Sheila was a devoted member of Wake Forest Baptist Church, where she served as a soloist, choir, and ensemble member. She also worked with the youth program and was actively involved in all aspects of the youth choir. She served on many youth committees and continued her work with the youth group long after her girls had graduated.

One of the great joys of her life was serving as a chaperone on youth mission trips, especially being the “unofficial” photographer.

Sheila is survived by her husband of 31 years, Tom Brown; her daughters, Anna Brown and Lydia Brown; her mother, Shelby Wooten; her sister, Cindy Wooten Pare (Mike); two nieces, Emma Pare and Amanda Gibbs (Allen); and numerous other beloved family members.

Dwayne Wesley Crouse

Our beloved “husband, father, grandpa, and friend to so many,” Dwayne Crouse, was called to his new address in the Celestial City on February 26, 2024, after complications from cancer.  Throughout his short journey with cancer, he never took his eyes off Jesus.  He rested in the knowledge that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:8

“Therefore, we do not lose heart.  Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.  For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Dwayne’s story began in Wichita, Kansas, on June 18, 1948, as the oldest of four children born to Gerald & Luella Crouse.  He met his high school sweetheart, Jenny Crouse, and they graduated from Derby, Kansas together in 1966.  Their love affair lasted 51 years, resulting in three children, 24 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, with 2 on the way.  When Jenny went home to heaven in 2018, Dwayne was fortunate to experience love again marrying Lisa M. Davidson.  They spent the last four years between North Carolina and Florida.

To say that Dwayne was a musical ‘natural’ is an understatement. Early on, he was introduced to the accordion, and although he may have had a couple of lessons, basically, he taught himself to play.  Such was also the case when he discovered the piano.  And he didn’t need any music.  If he heard a piece, he could play it.  With little formal training, he was, however, greatly influenced in his playing by listening to recordings of that great ‘classical’ pianist, Floyd Cramer (look him up).  The story is told of Dwayne helping his dad move a piano one day on the back of his truck.  His dad asked him to ride in the back with the piano, and instead of just riding, Dwayne decided to play as they rode along.  Apparently, a man pulled up alongside them at an intersection and shouted to Dwayne – “Can you play ‘Melancholy Baby’?”  Dwayne said, “Sure”, and began to play the tune by ear.  Another man pulled up to where his dad was and remarked – “Can’t you just get a radio like everyone else?”

However, Dwayne’s love for playing music became almost an idol in his life, and he felt he had to lay it aside.  It wasn’t until a man introduced him to the guitar that he felt he had a leading to pick it back up.  When Jenny (Dwayne’s first wife of over 50 years) and he were married, his talent began to bloom into a ministry of sharing the gospel and bringing life and joy to all who heard.  They not only led in musical praise in the churches God led them but also reached out to minister in prison settings and retirement facilities.  Dwayne loved singing and playing the praises of his Lord Jesus Christ, and God richly blessed him through the Holy Spirit to bring glory and honor to His heavenly Father and the Kingdom of God.

In the later years, his ministry was truly special as he led in praise and worship at his church, with so much peace, love, and healing being ministered to those who were there to hear and experience.  He truly had turned over this ‘natural’ talent back to the One who gave it to him, and consequently, his life brought many blessings and glory to the Father’s work here on earth.

Dwayne was preceded in death by his father Gerald, mother Luella, wife Jenny, brothers Kevin & Gary Crouse.  He is survived by his wife Lisa, sister Karen Turner (David), his children Kimberly Luanne Burke (Al), Kevin Dwayne Crouse (Laurie Jo), and Jonathan Scott Crouse (Aimee).

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 11:00 am at Hope Baptist Church, 825 Averette Road, Wake Forest, NC  27587.  A time of refreshments and fellowship will follow.

Flowers are welcome, or you may want to consider investing in the eternal.

Mary Hollans Kelly

Wake Forest

Mary was born to Ella Mae Niswander Hollans and Benjamin Franklin Hollans in the small town of Shawsville, Virginia.  Her family moved to Portsmouth, Virginia to follow her father’s work as an electrician.  Mary was raised in the Catholic faith and spent her early adult life as a wife and devoted mother to her children, Linda and Richard. She raised her children to appreciate the value of a good education and to appreciate the wonders of the world that surrounds them. She saw the value in missing a day of school to watch the circus train come to town or see the treasures of King Tut’s tomb.

In 1972, she married Charles William (Bill) Kelly Jr. Bill was a loving husband and as good a father as her children could have hoped for.  In 1983, Mary began a distinguished career in public service by working as a Congressional aid in the home office of Congressman Norman Sisisky. After Bill’s death in 2004, she continued her career working in the Chesapeake, Virginia’s Commissioner of Revenue‘s Office until her retirement in 2022.

Mary cherished the many friendships she developed through her work and community activities. Nothing gave her greater pleasure than her involvement in the many cultural and historical organizations of which she was a member. She was especially proud of her time with Old Dominion University’s Town-N-Gown for which she held several official positions.  Mary’s greatest fear was boredom, so she was always doing something and often it was something for someone else. Her generous spirit will be missed by many.

In 2005, Mary met Michael French while browsing through a bookstore.  Mike proved to be a loving companion for almost twenty years and a great support when she needed it most.  As Mary’s son, my wife, Bethany, and I cannot express the appreciation we have for Mike and the unconditional love he showed my mother each and every day.

So as we say goodbye to my Mama, I hope her heaven is filled with art and music and laughter and all the good things she deserved but didn’t get enough of in this life and I pray she knows how much she was loved, how grateful I am for all she did and sacrificed for me and how many lives were made better by her having lived the life she did.

I will simply say go in peace Mama since you didn’t like to rest.

Mary is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Bethany Kelly; loving companion, Michael French; daughter, Linda King; granddaughters, Rachel Gonzales and Jennifer King-Keeney; great-grandchildren, Vivien, Grace and William Gonzales and Ethan Keeney; and extended family Jane and Michael Thompson, Ann Thompson and Catherine Thompson-Schmidt.

A small graveside service will be held in Wake Forest, NC for close family.

A memorial gathering will be planned at a later date for her friends in Virginia.

Timothy Paul Donnelly

Raleigh

Timothy Paul Donnelly, 67, of Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2023 in Hospice at Hillside Nursing & Rehab, after a very courageous battle with cancer.  Everyone whose life Tim touched is sad that he is no longer among us, especially since we can no longer enjoy his company, his humor and wit, and his natural charm.

Born on October 8, 1956 in Elmira, NY, Tim was preceded in death by his mother, Judi Donnelly and his father, Kenneth Pelow.  He is survived by his wife, Cathy Donnelly, and his daughter, Cara Donnelly May (Brad), and his beloved dog, Bernie.  Tim is also survived by his brother, Dan Gill, and his sisters, Kathy Donnelly and Mary Strickland.  Tim is also survived by nieces, Heather Rose, Keely Tober (Steven Matthis), Sarah Foy (Michael), Danielle Gill, and Nathalie Podgorsky (Mike), and nephew Ryan Tober, and extended family and friends.  He was greatly respected in his community.

Tim’s early years were unique and adventurous.  As a young boy, he led a Bohemian lifestyle in a converted school bus, traveling across the country with his mom and siblings.  His family settled in Dundee, NY, where Tim attended Dundee High School.  He was a standout football and basketball player as well as a track star.  He set many league records!  He most fondly remembered being Prom King.  Tim went on to graduate from the University of New York at Albany with a history major.  For the remainder of his life, he enjoyed reading history, visiting museums, and exploring battlefields with his friends.

Tim had a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry where he earned numerous performance awards. Even when he was very sick, he would make the nurses slowly tell him the name of each medicine he was taking and what it was for.

Tim would tell you that his greatest accomplishment is his daughter, Cara, and he is so proud of Brad and her and the life they are building. Remarkably knowledgeable in many subjects that Cara was studying in medical school, they had a special time together when he was coaching her and helping her take medical exams.  Tim was a wonderful father, and despite his medical condition, he was able to give Cara away at her wedding in Colorado.  With Cara, he fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting his relatives in Ireland, his ancestral homeland.

A memorial service will be held at 11 o’clock, Saturday morning, February 10, 2024 at Clancy Strickland Wheeler Funeral Home, 1051 Durham Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587.
