Dr. George Oliver Jackson

Wake Forest

Dr. George Oliver Jackson, 85, of Wake Forest died Sunday, May 24, 2015, at Rex Hospital. He was born in Decatur County, Georgia, the son of the late Lewis Jackson and Hazel Lee Jackson. Dr. Jackson was a veterinarian for 41 years with the USDA and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean Conflict.

Dr. Jackson was a diligent man, dedicated to providing for his family and to setting an example for his children of anything can be accomplished through hard work and intention. He was a lover of education, and was devoted to his profession and to his alma mater, Tuskegee Institute. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and historical facts.

Funeral services will be held at 4 o’clock Thursday afternoon, June 4, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

Dr. Jackson is survived by his children, Wendell Bernard Jackson of Little Rock, Arkansas, Mark Anthony Jackson and wife, Shana, of San Diego, California, Debra Ann Loban and husband, Noel, of Wake Forest, Michael Demetrius Jackson and wife, LaTonya, of Houston, Texas, and Jeff Warren Jackson of Chicago, Illinois; brothers, Thomas Jackson of Rochester, New York, and Billy Jackson and wife, Mackie, of Denver, Colorado; sister, Rita Thompson and husband, Leroy, of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren, Madison, Kyana, Milani, Bailey, Drake, Imani, Maia, Morgan, Felicity, and Mahogany; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, George Oliver Jackson Jr.; sisters, Helen, Marion, and Betty; and brothers, Lewis, Malcolm, and Fred.

Charles Otis Brown Jr.

Wake Forest

Happy Day! Charles Otis Brown Jr. passed away peacefully into the presence of our Lord on Saturday, May 30, 2015, surrounded by his friends and family. “Papa” faced his cancer daily, no different than any other day of his life before his diagnosis. He lived his life based on his faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. This faith was lived out daily in his love for his wife, Nancy, his children, grandchildren and closest friends.

He retired from Westinghouse with over 30 years’ service after serving honorably in the United States Air Force. In addition to being a lifelong NC State fan, he was an avid amateur radio operator since his youth and enjoyed talking with his friends daily around the world. Charlie was preceded in death by his father, Charles Otis Brown, Sr. and his mother, Mattie Dill Brown.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 o’clock, Thursday, June 4, 2015, at Saint Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Nancy Lee Brown; his son, Charles Otis Brown II, and his fiancé, Jocelyn Kirton, of Wake Forest; his daughter, Suszon Brown Daniel and her husband, Richard, of Wake Forest; his grandchildren, Brittany Long, and husband, Josh, Brooke Zebrine and husband, Brandon, Mollie Daniel, and Nikki, Madison, Taylor, Rebekah, and Zachary Brown; great-granddaughter, Lyla Long; along with a multitude of other family and friends. His Beautiful Mind will be sorely missed.

 Mildred Morris Catlett

Louisburg

Mildred Morris Catlett, 86, of 1800 Flat Rock Church Road, Louisburg, died Friday morning, May 29, 2015, at her home. Mrs. Catlett was born in Granville County, the daughter of the late Henry Morris and Maude Munn Morris. She was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held at 3 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, May 31, 2015, at Flat Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary McNair, the Rev. Timothy Catlett, and the Rev. John Wright officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Catlett is survived by her daughter, Crystal Catlett of Louisburg; sons, Rommie E. Catlett, Jr. and wife, Christine of Warrenton, Virginia, and Morris Catlett and wife, Pam of Cary; sister, Agnes Morris Lowery of Wake Forest; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, R. Epp Catlett Sr.

 Brenda P. Ellington

Wake Forest

Brenda Pearce Ellington, 69, of Wake Forest passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at WakeMed. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late Vernon and Louise Pearce.

Brenda was a graduate of Wake Forest High School and of Mitchell’s Hair Styling Academy. She was a teacher assistant at Wake Forest Elementary School for over 20 years and worked at Hope Lutheran Preschool for eight years before retiring in 2008.

Brenda was a life-long member of Woodland Baptist Church where she served in many positions including teaching small children. She was currently on the hospitality and homecoming committee.

Brenda loved her family and especially her children, grandchildren and her dog, Chandler, who preceded her in death on May 19, 2015. Those who knew her will always remember her hugs.

A memorial service was held at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon, May 31, 2015, at Woodland Baptist Church with Pastor Tito Madrazo officiating.

Brenda is survived by her husband, Bob; her children, Stuart and his wife, Joye, and Tracey and her husband, Duane; grandchildren, Rebecca, Gregory, and Corey; step-granddaughter, Christina; and by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Ruby L. Powell

Wake Forest

Ruby Lowery Powell, 90, of Wake Forest died Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Mrs. Powell was born in Wake County, the daughter of the late Nannie and Eulon Lowery, and was a member of Woodland Baptist Church. She was married to A. Royce Powell, who preceded her in death after 56 years of marriage.

At Mrs. Powell’s request, a small private service was held at the gravesite.

Mrs. Powell is survived by her sons, D. Royce Powell and wife, Leej Copperfield of Raleigh and Bayard Powell and wife, Mary Caponera of Winston-Salem; grandsons, Zach Powell of Winston-Salem and Matthew Powell of Raleigh; sisters-in-law, Agnes Lowery, Louise Choplin and husband, Lewis, Rachel Holden, Dorothy Taliadoros and Carolyn Gordon; brother-in-law, David Powell and wife, Polly. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Alfred Lowery and Royster Lowery, and by her special niece, Cynthia Lowery Daniel.

Edward Alton Shive

Raleigh

Edward Alton Shive, 86, of Raleigh passed away Wednesday morning, May 27, 2015, at his home. Mr. Shive was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the son of the late Edward Dalton Shive and Jewel Knight Shive, and was a veteran of the United States Army. He was an avid sports fan, an excellent athlete and loved the sport of golf. He lived in California most of his life and worked as an accountant, owning his own business for nearly 30 years.

Mr. Shive is survived by his daughters, Vicky Shive Bunger and husband, Raymond, of Raleigh and Susan Shive Wayt and husband, Tim, of Atlantic Beach; grandchildren, Stephen William Bunger and wife, Ashley, of Davenport, Florida, Kelly Bunger Benson and husband, Chance, of Bogart, Georgia, and Morgan Wayt Umstead and husband, Garrett, of Wake Forest; and sister, Beverly Collier and husband, William, of Concord, California.

Memorial contributions may be made to the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) National Service Foundation, 3725 Alexandria Pike Cold Spring, KY 41076.

The family will be holding a private memorial service at a later date.
