Jean Bond McCamy
Wake Forest
Jean Bond McCamy, born Grace Jean Bond, died peacefully at her home in Wake Forest, North Carolina on Monday, October 21, 2024. She died as a result of complications of her age, Congestive Heart Failure and Cancer and was surrounded by her family until the end. Jean was a lifelong resident of Wake Forest and led a happy and fulfilling life here, deeply involved with family, friends and the life of the local community.
Jean was born on May 17, 1938 to James Nurney Bond and Grace Bazemore Bond in Windsor, North Carolina. In 1945, the family moved to Wake Forest when her parents accepted teaching positions there. Jean graduated from Wake Forest High School in 1956, where she served as Editor of the High School Annual and Head Majorette in her Senior Year and was also crowned Miss Wake Forest High School as a Junior.
While at Greensboro College Jean attended the 1957 College Press Convention in New York City. At the conference she met a handsome young man in a white Stetson hat, Bob McCamy, who was attending from Georgia Tech. They stayed up all night, riding the Staten Island Ferry and taking snapshots from the top of Rockefeller Center. That was the beginning of a long-distance dating relationship that culminated in their marriage in Wake Forest on August 22, 1959. Bob and Jean recalled that they married at Binkley Chapel on what may have been one of the hottest August days in North Carolina history.
The early years of Jean and Bob’s marriage took them to Cincinnati, Ohio, Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Montrose, Alabama. However, in 1965 they returned permanently to Wake Forest, living first in Forestville and then in Jean’s childhood home on West Sycamore Avenue.
During her long and active life in Wake Forest, Jean made a number of notable achievements and important contributions. She is likely best remembered for her long running editorial column in the Wake Weekly, “Views and Reviews.” This column ran continuously for over 50 years, recording her keen observations on life, people and town culture.
In the mid-1970s Jean was an active participant in the North Carolina Artist in the Schools program, an outreach program which brought various artists and art disciplines to Public Schools throughout the State.
In the early 1980s Jean returned to college and completed a degree in Fine Arts at Meredith. This led to her discovery of ceramics and ceramic arts and a career as a ceramic artist that lasted over 30 years.
She was a past member of the Wake Forest Library Board, the B.W. Wells Foundation, the Wake Forest Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council. In addition, Jean was an instrumental contributor to and past President of the Wake Forest Birth Place Society, past President of the Wake Forest Garden Club, and co-founder of the Wake Forest Flower Cart, a program delivering cheerful flower arrangements to seniors and the home-bound in the area.
Jean Bond McCamy led a rich and happy life, filled with family, friends and community. She loved writing, the arts, gardening, travel and people. She was an avid soccer fan. She loved entertaining and her home was always open to friends, family and visitors, whether local or from foreign lands. She was a devoted Wife and Mother, relishing time spent with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
Jean is survived by her loving husband Bob; children Bond McCamy and wife Luana McCamy, Cam McCamy and wife Lisa McCamy and Charlotte Shaughnessy and husband Harry Shaughnessy; grandchildren Kristina Van Buskirk and husband Jay Van Buskirk, Rachael Massey and husband Kenneth Massey, Grace Shaughnessy, Todd Shaughnessy, Sevynn Shaughnessy, Ella McCamy, Collin McCamy and Rachael Chen and husband Zeke Chen; great-grandchildren Maya Kenney, Avery McCamy Ian Massey and Logan Massey, Olive Chen and Elwood Chen.

Larry Cobb Lindsay
Wake Forest
Larry Cobb Lindsey, known affectionately as “Lindsey”, “Papa” and “Coach,” passed away peacefully at his home in Wake Forest, North Carolina, on October 17, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family and friends. Born on May 28, 1939, in Youngsville, North Carolina, to the late Margaret Cobb Forbes and William Jarvis Lindsey, Larry led a life rich in love, mentorship, and a passion for basketball.
From a young age, Larry was captivated by the game of basketball. His passion started with his own playing career. He played on the Youngsville High School 1-A State Championship team in 1956. After graduating from Youngsville High School in 1957, he pursued his passion at NC State University before joining the U.S. Army in 1961. That same year, he married his sweetheart and the love of his life, Cherie Love White, on December 30, 1961. Their love story spanned over six decades, filled with shared adventures and cherished moments.
Larry later played basketball at UNC Pembroke, where he continued his impressive college career, graduating in 1965. He then dedicated himself to coaching, becoming one of North Carolina’s most celebrated high school coaches. Starting at Youngsville High School, he led the team to two state championships in 1969 and 1970 before moving to Wake Forest, where he served as both coach and athletic director. Over 28 seasons, Larry’s teams captured six state championships from 1971 to 1973 and again from 1977 to 1979, while also winning more than 20 conference titles. His remarkable career record stands at 609-156, boasting a winning percentage of nearly .800.
His legacy was celebrated with numerous accolades, including Franklin County Coach of the Year (1966-1970), Wake County Coach of the Year (1971-1973, 1977-1979, and 1986), and the Sports Illustrated “Merit Award” (1972). He was also honored with inductions into the UNCP Athletic Hall of Fame, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame, among others.
Coaching was more than a profession for Larry; it was his passion. He transformed small teams into champions and was a true mentor, instilling values of loyalty and perseverance in his players. To them, he was not just a coach, but a lifelong inspiration, with many still calling him “Coach” long after graduation. In 2003, Wake Forest High School honored him by renaming their gymnasium the Larry C. Lindsey Gymnasium, a testament to his enduring impact.
In retirement, Larry and Cherie traveled the world, exploring destinations from China to Africa—and “everywhere in between,” as he would say—while still finding joy in coaching summer basketball camps and nurturing young talent. He was a devoted family man, cherishing time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Larry’s warmth and generosity extended beyond his family; his home was always open to friends and visitors.
Larry is survived by his loving wife, Cherie; children Andrea Lindsey and Shea Lindsey (Amy); grandchildren Emily Lafella (Patrick Browning), Abbey Lupton (Sam), Natalie Lafella (Tommy Letecheur), and Cameron Lindsey (Julianne); and great-grandchildren Ruth Lupton and William “Liam” Carson Lindsey. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Yvonne Timberlake, Donnie Lindsey, Ralph Lindsey, and his cherished grandson Carson Lindsey.

Bobby Gene Kemple
Wake Forest
Bobby Gene Kemple, 78, of Wake Forest, NC, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2024.
Bob was born on December 31, 1945, in Maud, Oklahoma, and was raised first in Mississippi and then in Hammond, Indiana. Bob was a graduate of Clark HS in Whiting, IN, a Marine Corps veteran, an engineer for IBM, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bob was a man of inner strength, generosity, humor, and dignity whose love of family, faith and sense of duty informed how he approached everything in his life. Bob was always willing to help anyone at any time, whether it was family, friends, neighbors, or total strangers. Acts of service were his love language. He saw the good in everyone and did his best to treat others with respect and integrity. He loved vintage cars, fishing, doing yard work, watching sports, helping others and spending time with family.
From his humble upbringing in Mississippi and Indiana to his service for his country in the Marine Corps, Bob’s sense of loyalty and responsibility carried over into his long engineering career at IBM, where he worked for over 25 years. Bob also spent countless hours volunteering and performing community service with the Catholic Church and the Raleigh chapter of the Knights of Columbus, which he eventually led in his position as Grand Knight. Under his leadership, the organization flourished, experiencing an influx of new members and financial growth. Bob later brought the Knights to St. Catherine of Siena in Wake Forest when it occupied the Old Stone Chapel and eventually in their current location, before eventually retiring from the group. Bob then spent many years volunteering at St. Catherine of Siena School, helping with Safety Patrol and earning the affection and admiration of many parents and students there.
Bob’s greatest joy was in family life. He and his wife Claudia were happily married for 56 years, never separating since they met in high school. They married in 1968 and lived in their hometown of Hammond for a time until they eventually moved to NC in 1978, where they raised their two children. Amy and Chris knew they could always count on Bob to help with any problem, large or small. His unending support and encouragement were always there to guide them as they grew into adults, and it meant the world to them. Bob’s two granddaughters and new great-grandson were the light of his life.
