Mary Virginia Perry Neville

Wake Forest

Mary Virginia Perry Neville was the only child of Daisy Mae Walters Perry and John M. “Jick” Perry. She was perfect in every way: beautiful baby, charming smile, and sandy-colored curly hair plus plump cheeks. Her parents, cousins, and neighboring relatives and friends adored her. She was called Ginger from day one and at an early age, Ginger went to Forestville Baptist Church (where her mother became a deaconess). She also enjoyed tap and ballet school. What a kid!

Ginger’s life of almost 72 years was filled with lots of love and laughter but also great sadness and tragedy beginning at age six when her father died suddenly of a heart attack.

Her husband of one year, Tommie Wayne Neville, died tragically at the young age of 21, and her beloved mother, Daisy, died of cancer 7 years later. That’s a great deal of sadness and heartbreak to experience before age 28.

Ginger sailed through school with good grades and good relationships with teachers and classmates. She was a faithful supporter of school sports and played community softball. As a high school senior, she was elected president of the Future Teachers of America and she and Jerry Looper were elected the senior class superlative for “Wittiest.” At the graduation exercise, Ginger received the “good citizenship” award. Her mother just beamed.

After graduation, Ginger worked at various times as a clerk at Unigard Insurance, as a server at the Plantation Inn, and for Storr Office Supply. Her longtime employment, from which she eventually retired after more than 30 years, is now known as the North Carolina State, Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

Meanwhile, Ginger absolutely loved her critters. Growing up, she and Daisy adored a brown Boston Terrier, Cindy. As a young adult, family friend Joe Lowery gave her a Scottie whom Ginger named Precious Perry. “PP” was her constant companion for years. Then came a live-in cat named Boots.

In recent years, Ginger cared for feral cats by feeding them on her back porch, giving them cover in harsh weather, and capturing them to be neutered. She also fed the many birds in her yard. She and her friend Lovie Adams fed and even played with deer in Lovie’s back yard.

There was no question that family and friends were of the greatest importance to Ginger.

We only mention a few; please know she loved you all. From Wake Forest schools: Sandy Bradley Ogburn, Lois Powell Corse, Kathy Neeb Barsalona, and Penny Hickman (who was the daughter of Mrs. Marietta Hickman, Ginger’s beloved English teacher for four years). From Forestville Baptist Church, and WF school: Lib Mason Maddox. Husband Tommie’s cousin, Martha Neville Harris. Stemming from a longtime friendship between the families, Elvin Anne Gay. Need to mention long-term friend Robert Ferris of Lexington and cousin Robert Moore, son of cousin Sylvia Perry Moore, of Raleigh.

Ginger supported the Koinonia Foundation of Wake Forest, an organization founded by her extended family and super-great friends, Jim Adams and wife Gayle. Include also as extended family and super-great friends, Jim’s brother Johnny Adams and his wife Kathy and their children plus Jim’s sister Marilyn Adams, son Ashton and husband Tommy Hines. Jim, Johnny and Marilyn are the children of J.B. and Lovie Adams. Johnny and Marilyn stayed by Ginger’s bedside through the night before she died the next morning.

Marilyn Adams will eulogize Ginger’s courage—a courage that carried her through the last 16 years of her life—a time when she spent Monday, Wednesday, and Friday preparing for and enduring the painful and exhausting business of dialysis. This may be a world record. If not, it is still very impressive.

Ginger is survived by a slew of first cousins: Ruth Ann Walters Dyer (Jim) of Wake Forest; Joanne Walters Wuest (Phillip) of Little Rock, Arkansas; Ann Walters Mulqueen (Dan) of Centreville, Virginia; Ida Walters of Leesburg, Virginia; Margaret Walters of Taos, New Mexico; Viki Walters Gustavson (Carl) of San Francisco, California; Patricia Walters Anderson of Leesburg, Virginia; Katherine Walters Gilmore (Mike) of Youngsville, North Caroline; and Sylvia Perry Moore of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Memorials are requested to be sent to Safe Haven for Cats and Meals on Wheels.

A service celebrating Ginger’s life will be held at 3 o’clock, Monday afternoon, August 12, 2024 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 3 pm prior to the service at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 405 S. Main Street, Wake Forest, NC 27587. (919-556-5811)
