Christine Keene

Wake Forest

Christine Keene, 80 of Wake Forest, NC and formerly of Cedar Bluff, VA, passed away Sunday August 4 at a WakeMed hospital. Born in 1944, she was the daughter of the late Charles Kilgore and Evelyn Sparks. Her faith in God and her family were the two most important things in her life.

She grew up in Richlands, VA and graduated from Richlands High School in 1963. Several years later and facing the prospect of having to raise three children on her own, she courageously went to Southwest Virginia Community College to get her degree. She then went on to be employed by the college in the Business Office and worked there for 26 years before retiring. She also went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, VA.

She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Richlands, VA and made sure her children grew up in that church as much as they did in their own home. While a member, she sang in the choir, helped coordinate and run a yearly deli fundraiser for the church, travelled in a performance group that performed plays at other churches throughout the area, and helped deliver meals to those in need. She was also an active member of the church’s Women’s Prayer Circle that she maintained even after moving to North Carolina.

After retirement she moved to Raleigh to live with her daughter and her family following surgery. In Raleigh, she found a new church family at Bayleaf Baptist Church and continued attending it virtually throughout the rest of her life. She later moved to Wake Forest to live with her granddaughter and her family.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Kilgore of Richlands, VA; her loving stepfather, Leck Sparks of Tazewell, VA; her mother Evelyn Kilgore Sparks of Tazewell, VA; her brother, Tom Kilgore of Richlands, VA; and her brother, Chuck Kilgore of Raleigh, NC.

She is survived by her three children: her son Greg Keene and wife Mary Krippendorf Keene of Roanoke, VA; her son Scott Keene and wife Jen Frazer Keene of Raleigh, NC; and her daughter Cara Keene Smith and husband Steve Smith of Raleigh, NC; four grandchildren: Faith Smith Taylor and husband Josh Taylor of Wake Forest, NC; Alex Smith of Raleigh, NC; Hudson Vanbenthuysen of Essex Junction, VT; and Bryce Keene of Raleigh, NC; two great-grandchildren: Cameron Taylor of Wake Forest, NC; and Erik Taylor of Wake Forest, NC; niece Jessica Kilgore Stone and husband Greg Stone and their two sons of Youngsville, NC; niece Laura Kilgore Mosteller and husband Jon Mosteller and their daughter and son of Hickory, NC; nephew Nick Kilgore and wife Maryandrea Kilgore and their daughter of Raleigh, NC.

A special thank you to her granddaughter, Faith Smith Taylor, and her husband, Josh Taylor, for opening their home to Christine to care for her and love her. As a Registered Nurse, Faith was a powerful advocate and fierce protector of her granny’s healthcare. She made sure that Christine always made it to her doctor appointments and that all of her health needs were seen to.

Services will be held at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest, NC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Bayleaf Baptist Church in Raleigh, NC. We love you and miss you Mom, but we know that you have already heard those wonderful words: “Well done, my good and faithful servant” and have entered into the joy of the Lord and your eternal home.

William J. Spendley (Bill)

Wake Forest

Born in 1935 in Jersey City, NJ, Bill was the product of Catholic education, and as he would remind you, more importantly, Jesuit education. He attended St. Joseph’s Parish School, St. Peter’s Prep, and St. Peter’s College, where he completed Marine Corp ROTC and was elected and served as senior class president. Additionally, during this time, he spent a year in the seminary. Thankfully, he decided that was not his calling and ultimately married Jan–the love of his life, his better half, and his wife of 63 years.

Bill also received graduate degrees from Seton Hall (master’s) and Columbia (doctorate). After growing up in poverty, Bill used education to propel himself into better circumstances and a successful career in education.

A dedicated educator, he served as a business teacher and school principal, and ended his career as a superintendent of schools. He was devoted to his students and was energized by interacting with young people. During his career, he led school districts through desegregation, declining enrollments, school closures, and protests. All of this paled in comparison to his greatest claim to fame–that Mariah Carey graduated from high school in his school district. With his well-honed people skills and upfront manner, the most difficult students loved him and adversaries became allies, but there was never any doubt that Bill was in charge.

Upon his retirement, Bill devoted much of his time to the Catholic Church. His contributions to the Catholic community were extensive, including being a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus, serving on the Board of Trustees at Cardinal Gibbons High School, and mentoring youth parishioners; he was honored for his service and contributions by St. Catherine of Siena Parish in 2009.

In addition to his service to the Church, Bill and Jan traveled both domestically and abroad. There were several European trips, including Scandinavia, Ireland, England, Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, and even a Russian River Cruise. Aruba became an annual pre-Christmas R&R to prepare for the holidays. Bill and Jan had many opportunities to participate in group trips with their family and friends, which centered around golf, sight-seeing, and other shenanigans. While the domestic trips would take too long to list, the most frequented destination was Las Vegas. Enough said, because what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Anyone who knew Bill knew he was a diehard sports fan of the Yankees, Rangers, Knicks, Notre Dame, Jordan Spieth, the St. Peter’s Peacocks, and of course, the obsession with the Giants he shared with his sons, siblings, and nephews. Bill spent countless hours in Giants Stadium cheering on the team through wins and losses. Who can forget in 2022 when the Peacocks made it to the NCAA Elite 8! Most recently, he kept daily tabs on Aaron Judge’s home run record, a topic covered in every phone conversation with his sons, Bill Jr. and John.

In addition to his love of sports, Bill had an uncanny knowledge of pop culture. You could always count on Bill to know whether Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez were still together. At first, he noted that Taylor Swift was getting a lot of PR from hanging with Travis Kelce, but his grandchildren helped him realize who the true celebrity in that relationship is, and he finally declared: “I’m a Swiftie!”

Of utmost importance to him and his pride was his family. He is survived by his wife Jan, their five children William Jr., John, Catherine, Maureen, her husband Ted, and Linda, and 11 of his 13 grandchildren. In addition, Bill was the surviving sibling, predeceased by his sister and two brothers. He was committed to the closeness of the Spendley family and loved seeing lifelong relationships develop among his children and his nieces and nephews. He was committed to maintaining Spendley family traditions. Most importantly, he shared his Catholic faith with his children through regular attendance at church, complete with pop quizzes on the Baltimore Catechism. He also shared traditions like Christmas Eve clam chowder, NY sports fandom, and an obsession with Kendall Jackson Chardonnay. One of the most important lessons he shared with his children was the value of friendship. The deep friendships Bill cultivated expanded the size of his family and taught his children what it means to show up for people.

Bill formed lasting relationships through work, church, and neighborhood and community involvement, most recently the community at Verena at Bedford Falls (Raleigh, NC) to which Bill and Jan moved in 2019. They were among the first to move in, and it was clearly a perfect fit. Bill was able to take his strong interest (one might say obsession) with politics and start a weekly current events discussion group. His friends there would describe him as dependable, a thinker and problem solver, a skilled and dedicated poker player, sports fan, and mentor. They also speak of his ability to accept and understand differences of opinion. For those who have known him the longest, that was clearly a skill he developed over time.

Bill is also known for his many catchphrases and generosity with words of wisdom. For his 80th birthday, his children and grandchildren compiled a word cloud to capture the best of these, including his favorite exclamations “Holy Christmas” and “Holy Mackerel!” His family and friends will forever remember his go-to advice: “Keep your options open.”

In lieu of flowers and in honor of the two grandchildren who predeceased him, memorials may be made via donations to The National Alliance to End Homelessness (endhomelessness.org) or The Brain Aneurysm Foundation (www.bafound.org).
