Edith W. Cash

Edith Mozell Woodard Cash, 94, of Youngsville died Sunday morning, January 12, 2014, at Louisburg Nursing Center. She was born in Granville County, the daughter of the late Robert Woodard and Mary Bowles.

Mrs. Cash was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

Graveside services were held at 11 o’clock Wednesday morning, January 15, 2014, at the Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ralph Vasquez.

Mrs. Cash is survived by her children, Jimmy Cash and wife, Debbie, of Zebulon, Wayne Cash and wife, Sidney Ann, of Youngsville, Neil Cash and wife, June, of Youngsville, Gerald Cash and wife, Judy, of Louisburg, Cathy Cash of Winston-Salem and Sandra Quintana of Youngsville; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Melvin Cash; by her son, Steve Cash; and by her grandson, John Cash.

Adell Bailey Holmes

Adell Bailey Holmes, 88, of Franklinton died Saturday, January 11, 2014, at Granville House, Oxford. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late John Bailey and Ora Kearney Bailey.

Graveside funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Monday afternoon, January 13, 2014, at Fairview Cemetery with the Rev. Johnny Holmes officiating.

Mrs. Holmes is survived by her sons, Johnny Holmes and wife, Carolyn, of Franklinton and David Holmes and wife, Trish, of Raleigh; sister, Alice Jenkins of Raleigh; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Bruce Jenkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Franklin Holmes.

Maidie O’Neal Mangum

Maidie White O’Neal Mangum, 89, of Wake Forest passed away Friday, January 10, 2014, at her home. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Henry White and Mary Ann Chalk White, and was a graduate of Youngsville High School.

Mrs. Mangum retired from Westinghouse as a Meter Inspector and was a faithful member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.

Funeral services were held at 3 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, January 12, 2014, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Joey Chafton and the Rev. Julian Motley officiating. Entombment was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Mangum is survived by her daughter, Marsha O’Neal Pearce and husband, Tommie, of Wake Forest; step-son, James E. “Jim” Mangum II and wife, Billie, of Wake Forest; sister, Sibylene White Rogers of Wake Forest; special nephew, Ronald White and wife, Frances, of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Jason “J.P.” Pearce of Youngsville, Jay Pearce and wife, Pam, of Rolesville, Jessica Hoffman and husband, Christian, of Burlington, James E. “Jim” Mangum III of Erwin, Eleanor Letson and husband, Paul, of Fayetteville and Rachael Dale and husband, Mike, of Winston-Salem; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harvey O’Neal and James Everett Mangum Sr.; by her step-daughter, Kay Shaver; and by 12 brothers and sisters.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mrs. Mangum’s caretakers Ann Lamb, Sandy Cortese, Gena Burrows and to all the staff of Liberty Hospice for their care.

Shirley Pender Horton

Shirley Pender Horton, 75, of Louisburg died Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at WakeMed. She was born in Wilson County, the daughter of the late Rudolph David Pender and Pauline Outlaw Pender.

 

Shirley was retired from Weavexx after 19 years of service. After her retirement, she was a homemaker and loved her garden and her flowers. She loved to quilt and made beautiful quilts for her family.

Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock Saturday morning, January 11, 2014, at Ransdell Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Harry Upchurch officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Henry Allen of Louisburg and Donnie Williams of Wilson; her sisters, Janice Rogers of Dudley and Paulette Lufzchek of Chesapeake, Va.; her brothers, Rudolph Pender of Wilson and Joseph Scott and wife, Burnice, of Bluff City, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Barbara Pender of Castle Hayne; fiancé, Ronald Williams; special friend, Tim Edwards; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Horton; her son, Jimmy Allen; her daughter, Barbara Ready; and by her brother, Phillip Pender.

Pallbearers were Gary Tipton, Brad Tipton, Bryan Tipton, Oscar Pendergraft, Tim Rogers, and Randy Rogers.

William A. ‘Wild Bill’ Brown

William A. Brown, 82, of Warrenton passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014. He was born in Staunton, Va., the son of the late Jesse Mae Rowe Brown and Luther Brown.

Wild Bill, as he liked to be called, was a lifetime Marine. He was a Silver Medalist Roller Skater and taught skating for many years. He was an avid B western movie fan and a member of their clubs. He also enjoyed many years of bowling and was hoping to get back into bowling next year.

Funeral services were held at 11 o’clock Tuesday morning, January 14, 2014, at the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury with full military honors.

Wild Bill is survived by his wife and constant companion for 12 years and just recently married on December 13, 2013, Judith Carney Brown, and by a brother, Donald Brown of Staunton, Va.

Janet Dixon Dement

Janet Dixon Dement, 63, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Franklinton, died Monday, January 6, 2014. Janet was the daughter of the late Marjorie Dickerson Dixon and James Byron “J.B.” Dixon Jr., and was a 1968 graduate of Franklinton High School.

A graveside funeral service was held at 1 o’clock Saturday afternoon, January 11, 2014, at Fairview Cemetery in Franklinton with the Rev. Helen Champion officiating.

Janet is survived by her daughter, Amy McBride and her husband, Dennis, of Holly Springs; her son, Scott Dement of Clayton; grandchildren, John Simon Dement, Kaden Dement and Anna McBride; sisters, Debbie Wood of Kinston and Sandy Simmons and husband, Jerry, of Apex.; and several nieces and nephews.

Logan Denton

Logan Denton, 87, of Wake Forest died Sunday, January 12, 2014, at WakeMed. He was born in Franklin County and was married to Becky Jane Perry Denton, who preceded him in death.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 o’clock Thursday morning, January 16, 2014, at the Denton Family Cemetery on Mitchell Store Road in Youngsville.

Mr. Denton is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Josephine Hunt Driver

Josephine Hunt Driver, 83, of Louisburg, died Tuesday January 7, 2014, at her residence. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Bessie Denton Hunt and Mark Henry Hunt. Mrs. Driver was preceded in death by her husbands, Yates Holmes and Claude Driver, and by her sisters, Elsie Pernell and Mary Charles Holmes.

A graveside funeral service was held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon at the New Hope Christian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Barham officiating.

Mrs. Driver is survived by her daughters, Debbie Batts of Wilson and Shay Dwyer and husband, Roland, of Cedar Park, Texas; sister, Shirley Hinson and husband, Kirby of Louisburg; three grandchildren, Jenifer Akers, Kendra Batts and Stephanie Lindler; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Frances Lillian Skowron

Frances Lillian Skowron, 92, of Raleigh passed away on Monday, January 13, 2014, at her home. Frances Skowron was born April 1, 1921, on Long Island, New York.

She is survived by her sons, John Skowron and his wife, Carolyn, and Robert Skowron and his wife, Rebecca; her brother, William Frietsche Sr.; grandchildren Lindsey, David and Kristin Skowron; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved so much.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents, William and Evelyn Frietsche; her husband of 51 years, John Skowron; and her brother, Robert Frietsche.

Frances was a member of St. Philips Lutheran Church. She loved music, and most of all her family. With her faith in Jesus Christ, she bravely faced her illness.

The family will receive family and friends on Friday evening, January 17, 2014, from 6 to 8 at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Center.

A funeral service will be held at St. Philip Lutheran Church, 7304 Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh on Saturday morning, January 18, 2014, at 11 o’clock. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Philip Lutheran Church.

Cheryl Smith Harrison

Cheryl Smith Harrison, 50, of Raleigh died Saturday January 11, 2014. She was born in Tokyo, Japan, to Col. Dale Smith and Edith Marie Hildebran Smith.

A memorial service honoring her life will be held Saturday, January 18, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Umstead Park United Church of Christ, 8208 Brownleigh Drive in Raleigh.

Cheryl grew up in High Point and graduated from High Point Central High School in 1981. She received her Bachelor of Science in Zoology from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1985 and a doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree from NC State University in 1989. She worked as a veterinarian and taught at NC State University as well as Wake Technical Community College.

After the birth of her son, Cheryl changed her life goals toward her passion for art. She pursued her enthusiasm for art at Meredith College and NC State University’s College of Design. She was finishing up her Masters of Art and Design from NC State with a focus in fibers, surface design, and textile collage illustration. She was an accomplished painter, fiber artist, and recently published children’s book author. Her art conveyed the importance of human-animal relations and the need to preserve and protect the natural world.

She also enjoyed performing music through singing in local a cappella groups, choirs, and a family bluegrass band. She was known for her kind and generous spirit toward every living being, and no creature went away hungry from her backyard.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Lee Harrison; son, Robby Harrison of Raleigh; brother, Dennis Smith and wife, Katherine, of Austin, Texas; and sister; Kathryn Drake and husband, Frank, of Wake Forest.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.
