Bennie Max Jenks

Bennie Max Jenks, 85, of Raleigh passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2018, at Atria Oakridge in Raleigh.

Max was born in Wake County to the late Vandorse Jenks and Mamie Ethel Watkins Jenks. As a veteran of the United States Army he later used his GI Bill to receive a degree from NC State. He retired as a textile engineer from Dupont after many years of service in the textile industry.

Private services will be held at a later date.

Mr. Jenks is survived by his daughters, Allison Jenks Hendricks of Greenville and Hope Jenks Knott and husband, Robert, of Clayton; grandchildren, Sydney, Cole and Jackson Hendricks and Cathy and Taylor Knott; sister, Sylvia Jenks Bigham and husband, Kenny; brothers, Dempsey Jenks and Hubert Jenks and wife, Polly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Miller Jenks, and a sister, Margie Jenks.

Barry Carson Payne

Raleigh

Barry Carson Payne of Raleigh died peacefully on December 5, 2018 at Falls River Court. Barry was born in Charlotte, a son of the late Ocie Vestal Payne and John Henry Payne.

He graduated from North Carolina State University with a degree in industrial engineering, and served as a lieutenant in Korea in the United States Air Force. Barry spent his entire professional career with Alcoa at various locations in Tennessee, Texas, and Pennsylvania before retiring to Hilton Head, South Carolina. Barry was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head where he served as an elder.

Beloved “Buddy” is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane Lowe Payne; daughter, Jennifer Cattano and her husband, Joe, of Raleigh; son, Oren Bradley Payne and his wife, Elizabeth, of Atlanta; grandchildren, Carson and Nicholas Cattano, and Emily, Melissa, Sarah Elizabeth and Barry Carson Payne II.

A private funeral service will be held at a later date in Maryville, Tennessee.

Janis Barrier Underwood

Wake Forest

Janis Barrier Underwood passed peacefully Friday, Dec. 7. 2018, to join her beloved husband, Dr. Nash Hare Underwood, in heaven. She was born June 11, 1926 in Concord to  Beulah Walter and Eber Edward Barrier and lived all her adult life in the town she loved so much, Wake Forest.

The focus of her time was as an active member of the Wake Forest Baptist Church. She especially enjoyed her book club Studiosa and her bridge group. Forever passionate about the game of golf, in addition to her many trophies and accomplishments, she was most proud to have shot her age on her 76th birthday.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy, and husband, Stephen Carl Gould, and her son, Martin Nash Underwood, and wife, Lori, and by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Always a mother, she never stopped taking care of her family and could not have been more proud of each of them.

A memorial service will be held at the Wake Forest Baptist Church on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018  at 11 a.m. with a reception at the church to follow.

Tricia Homan

Wake Forest

It is with great sadness that the family of Tricia Homan announces her passing on Sunday, December 9, 2018, at the age of 48 years.

Tricia will be lovingly remembered by her husband, of 19 years, Mark; and her children, Jake and Andrew. Tricia will also be fondly remembered by her parents, Duane (Debbie) and Karen (Harold) and parent’s in-law, Rich and Vicki; by her brothers, Steven and Michael (Joanne); her sister, Denise; her brothers in-law, John (Carolyn), Ricky (Jeanette); and sisters in-law, Beth (Chris) and Donna (Chuck).

Tricia graduated from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and truly enjoyed her flight attendant career with United Airlines, where she met Mark. What she loved the most was being a mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend to many and she did that extremely well.

A celebration of Tricia’s life will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Wake Forest Baptist Church. Beginning at 1:30 p.m. there will be a visitation in the church fellowship hall.

Maxine Philyaw Hales

Wake Forest

Maxine Philyaw Hales, 86, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2018 at her home in Wake Forest.  Maxine was born August 26, 1932 in Pitt County to the late Carl and Stella Philyaw.

She retired from Corning after many years of services. In her younger days, Maxine and her beloved husband, Johnnie, especially enjoyed spending time with their beach friends at Camp Ocean Forest in Emerald Isle. Maxine, affectionately known as “Mema” to her grandchildren, great- and great-great grandchildren loved to cook and never let a family member leave her house hungry.

Maxine is survived by her two sons: Roger Hales of Newport and Ron Hales and wife, Cathy, of Wake Forest; five grandchildren, Joseph Hales, Bryan Hales (Tabitha), Lauren Bock (Geoff), Ashley Yawn (Will) and Adam Hales; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by three sisters, Carline Pilkington, Franky Waters (Jack) and Healon Snead; one brother, Anthony Philyaw (Twyla); and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Hales; sister, Daphine Miller; brothers, Gene Raymond Philyaw and Carl Philyaw Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Patricia Hales.

The family will visit with friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018, at Bright Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens, beginning at 2 p.m.
