Carroll,DorothyB.Newspaper

Dorothy B. Carroll

Dorothy B. Carroll, 85, of Youngsville died Friday, August 1, 2014, at Transitions LifeCare Hospice House in Raleigh. She was born in Duplin County, daughter of the late Isadora McArthur Bell and Lem Bell, and was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Edwin Carroll, and a sister, Brenda Parsons.

A funeral service and celebration of her life was held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, August 4, 2014, at Harris Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Bill Haley and the Rev. Bill Wallace officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Carroll is survived by her daughter, Esther Austin and husband, Edward, of Wake Forest; sons, Jim Nicholson and wife, Emily, of Raleigh and Mike Nicholson and wife, Marianne, of Pittsboro; sisters, Arlene Powell and Faye Hatch, both of Mount Olive, Christine Tijiginelis of Fayetteville and Jean Hobbs of Raleigh; grandchildren, Bobby and Brady Austin, Kelly Nettleton and husband Sam, Michael Nicholson and wife Ko-Han, Katy and Eric Nicholson; and great-grandchildren, Mason and Emerie Nicholson.

Valedictorian of her class at Calypso High School in Duplin County, Dorothy was married in 1946 to Kater Morris Nicholson. At 23, she was left a widow with two little boys, Jim and Mike, who were then 5 and 13 months old. They lived with and helped her in-laws on the family farm until she married Edwin Carroll in 1960, and their daughter, Esther, was born two years later.

A Baptist minister’s wife for 43 years, she worked alongside Edwin as a partner in ministry to the seven Eastern and Central North Carolina Baptist churches in which they served. She served cheerfully, faithfully, and humbly in every position in which she was asked to serve – this was her life’s calling. The only volunteer church position that she had not held was that of deacon, until six years ago, when she became ordained as a deacon of Harris Chapel Baptist Church at age 79.

The number of lives impacted by Dorothy is countless. She loved everyone she met, and they were assured of that love, through acts both big and small, or simply her sweet smile – which brightened every place that she entered. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the light of her life, and she was the happiest when she was with any of them. Among her personal notes and information recorded for her family were these words that summed up Dorothy’s life: “I want all of you to love each other all of your lives, but most important of all is for us to love God and live for Him.”

Memorial contributions may be made to Harris Chapel Baptist Church, 2960 Tarboro Road, Youngsville, NC 27596 or to the Baptist Childrens Home of N.C., P.O. Box 338 Thomasville, NC 27360 or to the American Bible Society, 1865 Broadway, New York, N.Y. 10023.
