Elaine Thomas Crawford

Youngsville

Elaine Thomas Crawford, 80, of 208 Street was called home peacefully on Friday, July 27, 2018, at her residence.

She was born on January  13, 1938 in Yonkers, New York to the late Quilley and Bertha Harris Thomas. Eliane graduated from Commerce High School in 1956 and became an entrepreneur in the home day-care industry and also tax preparation services.

Elain was a dedicated member of Old Liberty Baptist Church in Louisburg where she enjoyed serving for over 25 years on the Mass Choir and Trustee Board. Elaine also dedicated herself to her community serving as a mother for a mother for the neighborhood.

Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Crawford of Yonkers; three children, Carletta Eaton, Kathleen Crawford and Donald Salmon Jr.; five step-children, Charles Jr., Neal, Anita, Steven and Erica; three grandchildren, Giuvanni, David and Darian; two great-grandchildren, Tamya and Rebeka; a sister-in-law; a grandson-in-law; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

The funeral was professionally directed on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at 1 p.m. at Old Liberty Baptist Church, and burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lynne Regan Mullen

Wake Forest

Lynne Regan Mullen, originally from Ogdensburg, New York and currently from Wake Forest, passed away August 2, 2018 in North Carolina. Lynne was the daughter of the late Anne and Lloyd Regan. She was a 1966 graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Ogdensburg and earned a bachelor’s degree from Nazareth College of Rochester, New York. She held a master of science degree in education from the State University of New York at Potsdam, a master of education in counseling and human development from St. Lawrence University, Canton, New York, and a ertificate in nonprofit management from the University of Illinois, Chicago. She also held the designation grant professional certified.

Lynne married Terry Mullen, originally of Ogdensburg, in 1972. Mr. Mullen died in 1995. The couple lived in Potsdam, Norwood, and Canton throughout their marriage. Terry and Lynne had two sons, Robert of Plattsburg, New York and Mark of Wake Forest.

Lynne was the former director of the Academic Support Center at Clarkson University from 1980 to 1998 where she held the title of Director of Educational Development, Assessment, and Disability Services. She moved to Florida in 1998, where she served as Director of Radio Reading Services for WUSF Public Broadcasting in Tampa; Director of Education, Training, and Employment for Volunteers of America in Cocoa; Acting Director Grants and Program Development at Gulf Coast Jewish and Family Community Services in Clearwater; and Director of Grants and Development for Metro Wellness and Community Centers in St. Petersburg and Tampa. In 2012, she began freelance grant writing for nonprofits, universities, hospitals, corporations, and municipalities throughout the country, and served in that capacity until the time of her death.

Lynne was a former board member of the International Association of Audio Information Services; past president of the Grants Collaborative of Tampa Bay; she served as chair of the Consultants’ Special Interest Group for the Grant Professionals Association (GPA), and served on the Program Committee of the North Carolina Chapter of the GPA; she previously served as Vice President of the Board of Directors of The Shepherd Center in Tarpon Springs, Florida.  Lynne frequently presented on the topic of grant writing and consulting throughout the country.

She was pre-deceased by her parents, her husband, Terry R. Mullen, and second husband, Anthony (Tony) Materkowski. Lynne is survived by her husband, Ronald Phelps of Wake Forest; her son, Rob and wife, Kate (Thompson), of Plattsburg; her son, Mark and wife, Toni (Catino), of Wake Forest; and grandchildren, Mason Mullen of Wake Forest, Destiny Danenberger of Plattsburgh, Alex Danenberger (wife Amanda and son Aiden) of Alabama. She is also survived by her beloved Yorkshire Terrier, Cassie, and maternal aunt, Noreen Loper of Ottawa, Canada; and paternal aunt (by marriage); Flo Larose Regan Tosh of Merritt Island, Florida, and many beloved cousins in Ogdensburg and throughout the U.S. and Canada. Lynne’s life was brightened by her many friends whose prayers and thoughtfulness made her battle with ovarian cancer so much easier to deal with.

A visitation will be held Saturday, August 11, 2018, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bright Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 405 South Main Street, Wake Forest.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Ogdensburg on Thursday, August 16, 2018, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Foxwood Memorial.

Russell Emmett Wiggins

Dunn

Russell Emmett Wiggins, 74, of Dunn, passed away Friday, August 3, 2018. He was born August 24, 1943 in Franklin County, a son of the late Marshall and Josephine (Holden) Wiggins.

The funeral was held Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at Oak Level Christian Church in Youngsville. Interment followed at Oak Level Christian Cemetery.

Russell graduated from Youngsville High School and attended Campbell University. He enjoyed sports, hunting and fishing. Russell will be remembered for his corny jokes and for his “see you in the funnies” goodbyes.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ardythe S. Wiggins; his son, Dwayne Wiggins; grandson, Levi Wiggins; and his brother, Twig Wiggins and his wife, Sarah.

Nora Mae Horton

Fuquay-Varina

Nora Mae Fox Horton of Fuquay-Varina passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Rex Hospital at the age of 86. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Nora Mae was born on April 26, 1932 in Rocky Mount where she resided for many years before moving to Wake Forest and finally Fuquay-Varina. Mrs. Horton was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be eternally missed.

Mrs. Horton is survived by her son, Charles Horton and wife, Sabrina, of Holly Springs; her son, Robby Horton and wife, Tammy, of Fuquay-Varina; her granddaughter, Jennifer Brown and husband, Brooks; her granddaughter, Tiffany Wieber and husband, John; her grandson, Robby Horton and wife, Sarah; her granddaughter, Kristin Horton and husband, Alicio; her great-grandchildren, Abigail Brown, John Wesley Wieber, Margaret Mae Wieber, and Porter Horton; and her brother, three sisters, and many other family members.

She is preceded in death by her husband, C.D. Horton, and several brothers and sisters.

Visitation was held Monday, August 6, 2018, at Bright Funeral Home and burial followed in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

John D. Kornegay

Youngsville

John Douglas Kornegay, 73, passed away Thursday August 2, 2018 in the care of his beloved wife, Uwhana May Kornegay.

He was preceded in death by his father, Evangelist James Wallace Kornegay Sr., and his mother, Verlie L. Kornegay.

He is survived by his wife, Uwhana; brother, James Wallace Kornegay II;  children, Roy Snow, Marcy Wright and husband, Ron, Joanna McKinney and husband, Charles, Jeremiah Kornegay, Jason Kornegay, Sarah Erwin and Mary Endicott; grandchildren, Stephen Snow, Casey Bobbitt, Naomi Jordan, Rebekah McKinney, Elisabeth McKinney and Caleb McKinney; and great-granddaughter, Ellie Jordan.

A graveside funeral service was held Monday, August 6, 2018, at Stonewall Farm, 1408 Sid Mitchell Road, Youngsville.

James L. Perry

Youngsville

James L. Perry, 78, of Youngsville, passed away Thursday, August, 2, 2018, in Raleigh. He was born April 9, 1940 in Franklin County, son of the late John Perry and Annie Alford Perry.

A funeral service was held Sunday, August 5, 2018, at Flat Rock Baptist Church in Louisburg. Interment followed at Flat Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

James served in the U.S. Airforce. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service. James loved spending time in the garden and enjoyed fishing at Atlantic Beach. He and his wife, Faye, attended Flat Rock Baptist Church where he was baptized. He was predeceased by his sister, Teenie Stallings, and his brother, Buddy Perry.

James is survived by his wife, Faye (Ray) Perry; his daughter, Angie Timberlake and her husband, Kenny; his sister, Barbara Faircloth and her husband, Ron; his grandchildren, Chris and Hollie Timberlake, great grandchild Evan Chalk, special nieces, Becky Daughtry and Sheila Creech; and several nieces and nephews.

Ricky Dean New

Youngsville

Ricky Dean New, 60, passed away peacefully Friday, August 3, 2018, surrounded by family and friends. He was born June 6, 1958, to his father, the late Robert Dean “Bobby” New and his mother, the late Linda Ann Smith, in Durham. NC. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Parker Wade New; mother-in-law, Carol Ann Bettany; uncles, David Smith, Theo Toole, and Max New; and aunts, Katherine Toole and Rita New.
Ricky served our country in the United States Marine Corp. He was employed in the remodeling and construction business. He was most recently employed by Aqua Edge, installing water filtration systems.

He was an avid Duke basketball fan. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, cousin, nephew and friend. He will be greatly missed.

Ricky’s memorial service was held Wednesday, August 8, 2018, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.
He is survived: by his wife, Andrea Bettany New of the home; a son, James Robert New of Durham;  a daughter, Jessica Michelle Hicks and husband, Kevin, of Archdale;  grandchildren, Bridget New, Peyton New and Grayson Hicks; father-in-law, Michael Bettany; sisters, Diane New and wife, Jackie, of San Francisco, Angela Pridgen Turner and husband, John, of Roxboro; aunts, Sondra Paschall of Madison, Alabama, Brenda Byrd and Carol Harvey, both of Durham,  Becky Smith of Timberlake; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters- in- law and step family members.

Shirley Dorsey Upchurch

Wake Forest

Shirley Dorsey Upchurch, 71, passed away on Monday August 6, 2018, at her residence. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Viola Gilliam Dorsey and Ennis Dorsey, and was preceded in death by her husband; George Madison Upchurch Sr. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday morning August 9, 2018, at Richland Creek Community Church. Burial will follow in the Rolesville Baptist Church Cemetery.

Shirley is survived by her son, George M. Upchurch Jr. of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Heather Upchurch Harrison (Todd) of Wake Forest and Cameron Upchurch (Haley Dickerson) of Wake Forest; and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Hudson Harrison of Wake Forest.

Memorial contributions in Shirley’s memory may be made to Richland Creek Community Church, 3229 Burlington Mill Road, Wake Forest, NC 27587.

Friends may visit with the family from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2018, at Richland Creek Community Church.
