Flora Mable (Davis) Berryann

Wake Forest

Flora Mable Berryann of Wake Forest died Thursday, September 7, 2017, at the age of 92. To the end, Flora was bright and alert and was known to be quick with a smile.

She was born on Christmas Day, 1924 to Eva Mae (Cole) Davis and George Charles Davis, Sr. in Mountainville, New York. As a middle child of a large family of 11 children, Flora began developing mothering skills even as a teenager. She loved helping her mother take care of her younger siblings. She attended school in Wallkill, New York, leaving school just before graduating to help support the family as the United States and many family members joined World War II. During the war, she walked to work at a dress factory in Walden, New York four miles each way. On January 2, 1944 she married Kenneth William Berryann (also known as Bill) at the Wallkill Reformed Church and they shared 57 happy years together until his death in June 2001.

Flora was active and proud of her support of her husband’s career, which was often in public service.  She supported his work as chief of fire police, town constable and they were founding members of the local Ambulance Corps and Little League Baseball in Wallkill. When they purchased the local hardware store, Flora provided the accounting for Chase Hardware for many years.

“Bill and Flo” enjoyed travel and family camping adventures. A skilled fisherman, Flora would often land the biggest fish on any fishing trip. After retirement, they settled and made many friends in Lehigh Acres, Florida. After Bill’s death, Flora moved to Raleigh where her three sons were living and she became a founding member of Cornerstone Community Church there. In 2008 she moved to Wake Forest where she enjoyed attending exercise classes at Curves well into her early 90s.

Of the many things that Flora was, more than anything else she was a loving and nurturing mother. Flora possessed superior mothering instincts and her household was always full of children.  In addition to assisting in raising many of her siblings, she raised her own five children and she was, and is, thought of as a second mother to many others who were friends of her children, cousins, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, and grandchildren.

She leaves behind sons Kenneth, William Berryann Jr. and his wife Karen (Hieber) of Wake Forest, Thomas Wilson Berryann and his wife Donna (Knapp) of Louisburg, and Donald Jay Berryann and his wife Carla (Baumgart) of Raleigh; daughter, Terri Mae Walker of Raleigh and son-in-law John Faux of Henderson. Flora will be reunited in Heaven with her husband and her daughter Marilyn Faux, who passed away in January 2017. Flora is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Her one surviving sibling, Ernest Donald Davis Sr., lives in Kingston, New York.  For each child, grandchild, great- and great-great grandchild, Flora hand made Christmas ornaments every year of their lives, a labor of love which began earlier each calendar year as her family grew.

A memorial service honoring Flora’s life will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 1 p.m. at Bright Funeral Home in downtown Wake Forest.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution may want to consider a donation to the Wallkill Volunteer Ambulance Corps in lieu of flowers.  Should you decide on this option, you can donate online through Charity Navigator at https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.profile&ein=146039298. After choosing “Donate to this Charity”, you have the option to “Donate in Memory of a Loved One” and fill in “Bill and Flo Berryann and their descendants.”  If you optionally enter the email “fmberryann@nc.rr.com” at the bottom, you will be identified as a donor but not the amount given.

Chief Petty Officer Gary A. Turner ‘Chief’

Raleigh

Chief Petty Officer Gary A. Turner “Chief”, age 72, retired U.S. Navy, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Durham VA Hospital after suffering from mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure.

Gary was born in Seattle, Washington, and joined the United States Navy in January, 1965, proudly serving on numerous commands in Vietnam until he was honorably medically discharged in July, 1971, after attaining the rank of chief petty officer.

Following his naval career, Gary worked for Honeywell, PerkinElmer and Exide Technologies as general manager of service. Following his corporate life, he began his own IT business, GAT Solutions.

Gary’s career outside the Navy took him to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he was fortunate enough to meet the love of his life, Sandy, who became his forever “bride” on December 28, 1979.  Even after celebrating 37 years of marriage, Gary still referred to Sandy as his “bride.” His love and devotion to her was obvious and eternal.

Gary and Sandy moved from Vancouver to Toronto, then to Fairfax, Virginia, back to Toronto and finally to Raleigh. Each move resulted in making and maintaining hosts of wonderful friends enriching their life journey together. Friends will long remember Gary’s loyalty, commitment and constant support whenever he could lend a helping hand to all who needed him.  Gary was always the voice of reason and calmness for which we are all grateful.

Gary’s passion for United State Veterans was matched by his passion for Harley Davidson motorcycles. Gary managed to merge his two passions and was an active member of Rolling Thunder honoring POW and MIA service members of all U.S. wars.  His Memorial Day weekend for over 25 years was spent riding with his brothers and sisters on the annual Run to the Wall in Washington, D.C. ending at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. His service commitment continued with his founding of the local chapter of VEMA, Veterans Enforcers Motorcycle Association. Gary was also a member of the Patriot Guard Riders and would meet planes carrying the bodies of fallen service people. The first Saturday of every month found Gary at the State Capitol in Raleigh for the reading of the names of those missing in the service of their country.

Sports were another passion Gary shared with family and friends. Gary was an avid Toronto Blue Jays baseball fan and an equally avid Duke Basketball fan.

In addition to his wife, Sandy, Gary is survived by his sons, who brought so much pride and love to his life and will live to honor their father’s values; Chief Petty Officer Geoffrey Allen Turner, currently of San Diego, California, and Jonathan David Turner of Fuquay-Varina. He is also survived by Jon’s wife, Felicity May Turner, and two beautiful granddaughters who provided untold fun and joy to his life, Audrey and Violet Turner, all of Fuquay-Varina. Gary is also survived by a brother, David Paul, of Seattle and is predeceased by his mother, Louise Summers.

The family wishes to acknowledge the compassion and care Gary received throughout his illness by the medical staff at Durham VA Hospital.  Their kindness will never be forgotten.

A memorial service for family and friends to honor his life was held at 1 o’clock, Saturday afternoon, September 9, 2017 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest.

The family requests anyone wishing to donate in Gary’s name, please consider helping to find a cure for mesothelioma at curemeso.org on the Tribute Wall under Gary’s name.

Adelaide Brooks

Raleigh

Adelaide Brooks, beloved mother, sister, wife and aunt, passed to be with her Lord September 11, 2017. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and her brother, Don. She is survived by her beloved son, David and wife, Nancy, of Raleigh dear sister and best friend, Betty Lehardy of Raleigh; devoted niece, Nancy Lehardy Ferguson and husband, Greg, of Rocky Mount; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and -nephews, and great-grand-nieces and -nephews

Adelaide was born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1917. She came from a close knit family and always had fond remembrances of visiting her Baltimore relatives as well as the family members still in Virginia. She was the first in her family to attend college thanks to the financial help from her Aunt Adelaide (Addie), for whom she was named, and graduated from Towson State Teachers College (now Towson University). After graduating she started her lifelong career of teaching elementary school,  first in the Baltimore County schools, then Hartford Day School in Bel Air, Maryland and eventually at Ravenscroft in Raleigh.

Adelaide met her husband, Bob, at a war-time dance for officers in Baltimore which she was hosting. When he introduced himself she told him she knew only one Brooks who worked with her Aunt Addie at the bank. It turned out that she was Bob’s aunt and the two aunts quickly decided that it was OK for these two young people to date. Bob and Adelaide were married on Christmas 1943 and shortly thereafter Bob shipped out to the Pacific. After the war was over Bob was stationed in Hawaii and Adelaide was able to join him for several wonderful years before they came back to the states.

When they came back from Hawaii they moved back to Baltimore where Bob worked for Glen L Martin Company and continued in the reserves. Their son, David, was born in 1955 and they moved to Bel Air, Maryland shortly afterwards. In 1963 Bob had an opportunity with RTI, a new company in Raleigh, and so they moved to the then brand-new subdivision of North Hills. Adelaide resumed her teaching career at Ravenscroft School, was active in the League of Women Voters, and played piano and organ for many years at Trinity Baptist Church, where Bob also served as a deacon. After retirement they moved to Wake Forest and were members of Wake Forest Baptist. After Bob passed in 1995, Adelaide moved to Springmoor Life Care Retirement Community where she was actively involved in the Women’s Club and other activities for many years.

The family expresses sincere thanks to the caring staff at Springmoor’s Stewart Health Center.

A memorial service was held in the Springmoor Auditorium Sunday, September 17, 2017.
