Dr. Lois Sugarman

Dr. Lois (-Marie Loucks) Sugarman died peacefully at home in Wake Forest on Augus 9,2017 following a long illness. The eldest daughter of John M. and Helen Bill Loucks, she was born on May 7, 1937 in Ogdensburg, New York.
Dr. Sugarman was educated at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing and Syracuse University, where she earned bachelors and masters degrees in nursing and a Ph.D. in child and family studies in 1990.
The founder of the Syracuse chapter of SHARE/Hope for Bereaved, Dr. Sugarman was also a certified death education counselor and held advanced certification in thought field therapy, in which, both in private practice and as a member of the Association for Thought Field Therapy Foundation Trauma Relief Team, she was involved professionally for nearly twenty years.
Her professional affiliations were numerous, including the Association for Thought Field Therapy, the American Psychiatric Nursing Association, the American Mental Health Counselors Association, the Syracuse University College of Nursing Alumni Association (of which she also served as president from 1991 to 1993), the St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nursing, Kappa Omicron Nu National Honor Society for Human Development, Women in Thanatology, and the Association for Death Education and Counseling (of which she served as treasurer from 2002 to 2003
She was active in all of the communities in which she lived, working with hospice organizations in Syracuse, Hilton Head Island, and Wake Forest, in addition to Hope Cottage of the Low Country and the Stephen Ministry of All Saints Episcopal Church in Hilton Head Island. In Wake Forest, she was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.
Dr. Sugarman was an accomplished amateur pianist and, when in Syracuse, an avid supporter of the symphony. She was very close to her children, grandchildren, as well as to her siblings and her nephew, her niece, and their children. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and visited various countries in Europe, including Iceland, Italy, and a cruise on the Danube in 2016.
Married for over 52 years to Dr. Edward Sugarman, Dr. Sugarman is survived by her husband; her children, Helen Schicketanz, Diane Sugarman, Jack Sugarman; two grandchildren, Max Edward Schicketanz and Lucy Eleanor Sugarman; in addition to her sister, Fran Roberts; her nephew, John Roberts; her niece, Jill Brochard; and four great-nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Frank Loucks; and her daughter, Janet.
A memorial service for Dr. Lois Sugarman was held Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on New Hope Road in Raleigh.

Annalisa Christine Schulze

Annalisa Christine Schulze, 19, of Wake Forest passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017. She was born on July 3, 1998 in Wake County.
Annalisa was a member of Wake Forest Presbyterian Church where she participated in the youth group, mission trips, and liturgical dance. After graduating Wakefield High School in 2016 she enrolled at East Carolina University where she was a rising sophomore. She was a highly gifted individual who excelled in anything she wanted to accomplish, whether it was academics, dance, music, art, or karate.
Annalisa was a loving, big-hearted person who was eager to help those in need. She possessed a strong ability to relate to others, putting everyone at ease in her presence. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her.
A viewing will be held 1 p.m. and a celebration of Annalisa’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, August 12, 2017, at Wake Forest Presbyterian Church. Friends may visit with the family at a reception following the service at the church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Silas and Dana Schulze and Ellis and Mary Kitzman.

James Lloyd Robertson

Jim was born in Fulton, Missouri to Millard L. and Mary Adele (Poore) Robertson. He is survived by his wife, Carol; a brother, Lee Robertson of Downers Grove, Illinois; daughter, Cathrine, her husband, Albert, and grandson, Thayer Jones; and son, Eric, all of Wake Forest. Grandchildren include David Mead and wife, Kailyn, Dan Mead and fiancé, Chelsey Frasier. Great-grandchildren include Connor Mead and Marlee Mead, both of Wake Forest.
Jim grew up in Fulton, Missouri, where he attended high school and received his Eagle Scout Award. He attended the University of Missouri, Columbia. He met his life partner, Carol, and after marriage they embarked on a life adventure.
Starting an IBM career in Poughkeepsie, New York, Jim specialized in software process engineering and mainframe software development. In 1981 they moved to Raleigh where Jim became the manager of a significant software development program for IBM. After delivery of that product they spent three years in Europe (Holland) promoting the IBM world wide network. After returning to Raleigh, Jim became involved in telecommunications and managed groups of IBMers all over the world to deliver several products. After 30 years Jim retired from IBM.
He started his own management consulting business but soon found himself joining Perot Systems. He worked for Ross Perot in California, creating the first market-driven electricity market. He and Carol spent two more years in Holland working with the Dutch Telephone company and then returned to the States to help Volkswagen/Audi of America. Then back to Raleigh to oversee the Y2K transition for Quintiles, the largest contract pharmaceutical company in the world.
The last Perot tour was developing a programming development center in London to support clients through Europe starting with a company in Luxemburg. The last deployment was Reston, Virginia as program management director for Sprint Nextel.
After finally retiring, Jim focused on community service. He was on the board of directors of a non-profit corporation promoting environmental issues, the board of directors for the Wake Forest Rotary Foundation, president of the Wake Forest Rotary Club and vice president of Wake Forest Arts. He and Carol provided consulting for Berlitz Relocation Services to facilitate smooth transitions for European expatriates coming to work in the U.S. and U.S. citizens moving to Europe. He was also a long-time member of the Dutch Club (De Weiken).

Patricia Cates Lamm

Patrice Cates Lamm, 54, departed this world Monday, August 7, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born July 8, 1965 in Burlington to the late Bernice Testerman and Carlton E. Cates. Patrice worked for many years in home decor, but above all was a devoted mother, dedicated wife and loyal friend to many. She lived life fully and loved doing for others.
Memorial services were held 4 p.m. Sunday, August 13, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.
Surviving are her husband, Luther Gene Lamm; son, Braxton Gene Lamm; father, Carlton Cates and wife, Velma Cates; sisters, Cindy Hinshaw and Carla Cates Starr, and many extended family and friends whom Patrice loved dearly.

Mary Ruth Pearce Lee

Mary Ruth Pearce Lee, age 91, passed from this earth into the arms of her Savior on Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at her home in Wake Forest. She had lived independently until recently when a hospital stay necessitated some in-home care.
Mary was born on November 30, 1925 in Rolesville to a large and loving farming family who “always had their needs met and some of their wants,” as she was apt to describe it. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Audrey Lee, and two granddaughters, Cameron and Meredith, all of Wake Forest. She is also survived by a sister, Elsie Shearon, a brother and sister-in-law, Everette and Lillian Pearce, and by many loving family members on both the Pearce and Lee sides. She was predeceased by her husband, Ira D. “Shorty” Lee, and her daughter, Mary Susan Lee.
Dedication to her family was her priority. She served in many volunteer roles over the years in the school and outside activities of Susan and Phil, while at the same time keeping the books and paying the bills for Lee Electrical Service and Ira D. Lee and Associates. Her family’s life was truly her life as she walked alongside them every step of the way.
She had a creative side and was known for writing poetry for special occasions or celebrations. Mary was a good cook whose penchant for “making mints” garnered her much notoriety at family events and were always a welcome part of any remembrance. Mary was a woman of faith, with a kind and gentle spirit, and had accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. We grieve her loss on earth but rejoice in knowing that she is in Heaven now, in the presence of our Heavenly Father and his son, Jesus Christ.
A visitation was held on Saturday, August 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bright Funeral Home in Wake Forest. Entombment is in the Rolesville Baptist Church cemetery. A public service to celebrate Mary’s life was held on Sunday afternoon, August 13, at 2 p.m. at Rolesville Baptist Church.

John Tatem Fonville, 74, passed away on Wednesday morning, August 9, 2017. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Miriam Tatem Fonville and Bruce Fonville.
A graveside funeral service was held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, August 13, 2017, at the Falls Community Cemetery.
John is survived by his wife, Phoebe Overton Fonville; a son, Johnny Fonville and wife, Pam, of Wake Forest; a step-daughter, Veronica Beckham Hayes and husband, Michael of Epsom; step-son, Timothy Beckham and wife, Wendy, of Henderson; sister, Elizabeth Jackson of the Falls Community; grandson, Brice Fonville; granddaughter; Kimberly Pearce, a great-granddaughter; Addison Pearce; and an aunt, Ann Fonville.

Thomas E. Douglass

Thomas E. Douglass was born August 20, 1951 to William and Janice Douglass in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Perry Hall High School in 1969 and holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He became an associate professor of English at East Carolina University where he organized the Contemporary Writers Series and the Veterans Writers Project and taught American and British Literature and Writing. His most recent book, Voice of Glory, was published in June 2017. He enjoyed baseball, old movies, and music of all kinds.
Tom is survived by his two daughters, Rachel Nifong and her husband, Jame, of Oxford, Mississippi and Abigail Douglass of Wilmington; wife, Susen Douglass of Louisburg; one grandson, Andrew Nifong; his brother, Matt Douglass and his wife, Sandy, of Baltimore; and beloved extended family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill, in 2001.

Virginia Averette Harrison, 89, of Wake Forest passed away peacefully on her birthday, Friday, August 11, 2017. She was born in Granville County, the daughter of the late Thomas and Unity Rose Averette. She was a devoted and loving Christian mother (Hebrews 12:2).
A graveside funeral service was held at 11 o’clock Monday morning, August 14, 2017, at Creedmoor Cemetery with Chaplain Mike Shannon and the Rev. Craig Bailey officiating.
Mrs. Harrison is survived by her son, Wade Harrison; sister, Allie Beach of Falls Church, Virginia; grandchildren, Gray Harrison of Nome, Alaska and Whitney Hinton and husband, Justin, of Youngsville.
She was preceded in death by her son, Tracy Harrison, and by her sisters, Sue Averette, Joyce Atkins, Mable Bragg, Sally Price, and Tina Rabasa.

Ida Zielinski

Ida Zielinski, 87, passed away on August 13, 2017 at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. Ida, her dad and brother were all transferred to North Carolina with the Westinghouse company. She and her family settled in the Wake Forest / Raleigh area. She retired on August 14, 2006 with 50 years of dedicated service.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 16, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Rev. Travis Bradshaw officiated. Entombment followed in Pine Forest Memorial Garden in Wake Forest.
She is survived by her son, David Zielinski and wife, Lorraine Schmelzer; sister-in-law, Carol Smith; nieces and nephew, Cathy Lewis (Kevin), Greg Smith, Lisa McConnell (Gary); “GREAT” nieces and nephews, Jeff Lewis (Cammie), Lisa Ann McElroy (Tony), Steven Lewis (Danyell), Brandy and Brittnee McConnell; Ida was also a “GREAT, GREAT” aunt to eleven nieces and a nephew! She was a step-grandmother to Andrea Feeney (Nathan), Jason Baker (Tasha); and “GREAT” grandma to Breanna, Skyler Aaron, Dustin, Alyssa, Cheyenne, Billy and Chloe.
She is predeceased by her parents, Charles E. Smith and Ethel Dawe Smith; and brother, Bruce Smith and fiancé, James Bragg. The family would like to share a special thank you for the 5th floor West doctors and nursing staff at Rex. Their kindness and caring attention shown to Ida will always be appreciated.

Margaret Ann Plathe Procopio

Margaret Ann Plathe Procopio, 73, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2017, at her home. She was born in the District of Columbia, the daughter of the late Walter and Christine Volk Plathe. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Ronald Hugo Procopio.
Funeral services will be held at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon, August 18, 2017, at Oak Level Christian Church, 2279 Cedar Creek Drive, Youngsville, with Pastor Gary Williams officiating.
Mrs. Procopio is survived by her children, Domenic J. Procopio and his wife, Tina, of Youngsville, Michelle Procopio of Louisburg and Ronald H. Procopio Jr. and his, wife Robin, of Wake Forest, a sister, Doris Peters of Youngsville; grandchildren, Julie, Ronnie, Domenic, Ronnie, Payton and Kristel; and five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Procopio was an active member of Oak Level Christian Church for many years, where she was loved by many, and devoted much of her time serving many through the Oak Level Christian Church Food Bank.

Donald W. ‘Don’ Bass

Donald W. “Don” Bass, 84, passed away on Tuesday morning, August 15, 2017, at his residence. He was born in Dudley on August 27, 1932, the son of the late Lula L. Peele Bass and Marion B. Bass, and was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Bass; and sisters, Mable Turnage, Hilda B. Radford, Tabatha B. Best, Edna B. Bateman and Ruth B. Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of the Flat Rock Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon.
Don loved to cook, play golf, garden and daily work the crossword puzzle in the paper. He was known for his desserts, especially banana pudding.
Don married the love of his life, Carolyn J. Bass on March 8, 1997. They were married 20 years. He was a devoted and loving Christian husband, father and friend.
A funeral service will be held at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon, August 18, 2017, at Flat Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary McNair officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Bass is survived by his wife, Carolyn; son, Mike Bass of Bridgeton; stepson, Craig Jones (Melissa); stepdaughters, Jill Holmes (Allen), Nancy Burdette (Terry) and Pam Bailey; granddaughters, Kayla Bass of New Bern, Amy Bass of Franklin, Tennessee, Allyson Holmes and Delaina Faircloth (Matt); grandsons, Dal Bailey and Will Holmes; great-grandson, Josh Harrell of Pennsylvania; and many special nieces and nephews.
