Kevin Dale Hiatt

November 23, 1954 ~ May 24, 2017

Mr. Kevin Dale Hiatt, 62, passed peacefully on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at UNC Rex Healthcare in Raleigh surrounded by his loving family.

Kevin was born on November 23, 1954 in Winston-Salem to Edith Swaim Hicks and the late Everette Brooklyn Hiatt.

He was preceded in death by his father, his wife, Deborah “Debbie” Ann Crumpler Hiatt, and his brother, Sherrill Harvey Hiatt.

Kevin is survived by his two children, Adrienne Blair Gillis and Tyler Ray Gillis; his grandson, Hiatt Patrick Reeves; his mother, Edith Hicks; and his sister, Becky Hiatt Eckrote.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Davis Memorial Chapel in Winston-Salem.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Denise Laurienti and the staff at the North Carolina Heart and Vascular Hospital for their care during Mr. Hiatt’s illness.

Holland Duvall Pace Jr.

Wake Forest

Holland Duvall Pace Jr., 62, of Wake Forest passed away at home surrounded by his family on May 27, 2017. Mr. Pace was born in Martinsville, Virginia to the late Holland Duvall Pace Sr. and Virginia Wade Pace. He was a consultant in the IT field for many years and was currently an IT project manager for ABB.

Mr. Pace loved his family and some of his passions were cooking, going to the beach, reading a good book and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling to tropical locations, snorkeling, staying physically active and watching the abundant wildlife around his home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 o’clock Thursday, June 1, 2017, at Clancy Strickland Wheeler Funeral Home with the Reverend Lewis Harris officiating. Friends may also visit with the family at the home, 2320 Paddstowe Main Way in Wake Forest.

Mr. Pace is survived by his wife of 29 years, Susan Lee Pace; sons, Holland Duvall Pace, III and wife, Sarah-Beth, of Kinston, John Richard Pace and wife, Heather, of Smyrna, Tennessee, Jonathan David Lee and wife, Andrea, of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Alexander Austin Pace of Wake Forest; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Judy Pace Bowles of Hawaii; sister-in-law, June Pace of Martinsville, Virginia; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Rodney and Sally Lee of Kinston; brother-in-law, Richard Lee of Cary; and several nieces, nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Charles Kenneth Pace.

Mary Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Joyner

Franklinton

Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Joyner, 87, died Monday, May 22, 2017. Betsy was born September 17, 1929 in Granville County to the late Edna Louise Ford Baker and the late John Alexander Baker.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters, as well as her husband, James Sidney Joyner.

Graveside services were held at Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Fairview Cemetery in Franklinton.

Surviving are a daughter, Carol Louise Joyner Lukosius and husband, Paul, of Youngsville; two grandsons, Daniel James Lopez and wife, Meara Lopez, of Minnesota and Joseph Bryan Joyner Lopez of Franklinton; three nephews, Richard Bryan Finger of Athens, Georgia, John Charles Finger of Greenville, South Carolina, and David Michael Finger, also of Greenville; two nieces, Nell Baker Finger Nanarello of Greenville, South Carolina and Candace Ethridge Cornell of California; and many other nieces, nephew, cousins and their families.

In lieu of flowers, Betsy’s family requests that those who wish to do so remember her with a donation to the ASPCA, a children’s charity or charity of one’s choice

Gwendolyn ‘Wendy’ Jalot

Youngsville

Wendy Jalot, 64, died Tuesday, May 23, 2017. Wendy was born January 31, 1953 to the late William and Anna Johnson in Seaford, Delaware.

A dedicated wife, mother and homemaker, she and her husband, John, raised their family in Wake Forest. Wendy worked in real estate in Wake Forest and Wilmington, but her life centered on her family. She supported her husband and children’s activities as a scheduler, chauffeur, seamstress, painter, coach, fundraiser and cheerleader. In later years, she found great joy with her dogs, Meeka and Murdock, and more than a dozen grand-dogs.

A memorial service was held Saturday, May 27, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

Wendy was dearly loved by and especially close to her husband of 46 years, John Jalot; three daughters, Tresa Jalot and husband, Mark Roberts, Suzanne Jalot, and Johnna Jalot and husband, Ryan Swink; her best friend of 53 years, Donna Stevenson; and two special nieces, Gina Pepper and Carla Brown. She is survived by three sisters and a brother, and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, Wendy requested a donation in support of your local animal shelter or favorite dog rescue.

Geraldine Williams Oakes

Youngsville

Geraldine Williams Oakes, 55, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2017. She was born in Wake County, the daughter of Daphine Green Williams and the late William Newton Williams Jr. She was also preceded in death by her father-in-law, Douglas Oakes.

Geraldine owned Oakes Grading Company with her husband, Robbie.

A funeral service was held at Sunday afternoon, May 28, 2017 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Wes Register officiating. Burial followed in the Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Geraldine is survived by her husband, Robbie Oakes; a daughter; Kaitlin Oakes; sons, Will Oakes and Jarred Oakes; mother, Daphine Green Williams; sister, Jennifer Haagen and husband, Rene; mother-in-law, Jo Anne Oakes; a nephew, Erich Haagen; and many aunts, uncles, nieces.

Warren Edward Evans

Rolesville

Warren Edward Evans was born on November 27, 1943 to the late Lou Allen Kyser Evans and Ealie Alex Evans in Evergreen, Alabama. He accepted Christ at a young age and joined Millidgeville AME Zion Church and continued his loyalty to them until death. He graduated from Conecuh County Training School in 1961.  After high school, he attended Tuskegee Institute where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electronics in 1966 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. It was during his time at Tuskegee that he met the love of his life, Nellie. They married in 1967 and to this union one child, Wayne, was born.

After his honorable service in the U.S. Air Force (ret. 1970), he joined the workforce as a quality control engineer with Xerox in Rochester, New York, where he worked until his retirement in 2001 after 31 years with the company.

The ever-dedicated servant of God, Warren became a member of Genesee Baptist Church in Rochester under the direction of Dr. Vera Miller. Following Nellie’s retirement in 2005, the couple relocated to Rolesville, where he recently became a member of Friendship Chapel Baptist Church.

In 2007, Warren became the grandfather to Wyatt Evans, who he affectionately called “WyWy.”  He thought the sun and moon rose in Lil Budd.  Loved by all, he was generous, kind, forgiving and lovable.  He enjoyed watching and playing sports, westerns and bowling.

A funeral service will be held at 12 o’clock noon Saturday, June 3, 2017, at  Friendship Chapel Baptist Church in Wake Forest. Burial will follow in the Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Warren is survived by his devoted wife Nellie F.W. Evans; his son, Wayne (Robin) and grandson, Wyatt, of Silver Springs, Maryland; adopted son, Vernon of Los Angeles, California; many, many adopted daughters around the nation; sisters, Faye and Edith of Montgomery, Alabama; brother Edgar (Adrian) of Montgomery, Alabama; nieces, Marie (Richard) of Mason, Tennessee, Barbara (Jeff) of Nashville, Tennessee and Andrea of Alexandria, Virginia; nephews, John Larry of Memphis, Tennessee, Anthony of Mason, Tennessee, and Anthony of Alexandria, Virginia; and a host of great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.

A viewing will be held at the church for an hour prior to the service.

Charles Albert Marshall

Wake Forest

Charles Albert Marshall, 78, of Wake Forest passed away Sunday evening, May 28, 2017, at Wake Med. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Lantie Bailey Marshall and John Albert Marshall, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Marshall was a retired correctional officer with the N.C. Department of Correction after 32 years of service and from Waste Industries after 18 years of service. He was a member of the Raleigh Family Moose Center for over 30 years.

A celebration of Mr. Marshall’s life was held Wednesday afternoon, May 31, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial followed in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens with honors provided by the N.C. Prison Honor Guard.

Mr. Marshall is survived by his son, Bert Marshall and wife, Wanda, of Wake Forest; daughter, Debbie Coplen and husband, Glen, of Youngsville; sister, Betty Lou Lockleair and husband, Hutch, of Zebulon; brothers, Lawrence Marshall and Donnie Marshall, both of Wake Forest; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Thaddie Mae Marshall.
