Margaret Mary ‘Mick’ Stitt

Raleigh

Margaret Mary “Mick” Stitt, 87, of Raleigh joined Her Lord and Savior on April 27, 2017. She is welcomed into heaven by her husband of 58 years, Frank; daughter, Maribeth Spangenberg; daughter-in-law, Carla Stitt; son-in-law, Dan Hanlon, her loving parents, Elizabeth and Joseph Ehland; her brothers, Richard, Jack, Joseph, Jim Ehland; and sister-in-law, Gerri.

Margaret Mary worked as a nurse and director of nursing in the alcohol and drug recovery field for 25 years. She was an incredible sponsor and mentor to many with her selfless compassion, humor and gift of listening. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church for the past 28 years where she served as a wedding director and Stephen Minister.

Margaret Mary was a woman of strong faith. God was the compass of her life and all paths were chartered through Him. She was a lifelong friend to anyone that met her. She loved to laugh, and treasured all time spent with family and friends. She was an extraordinary mother to her seven children and an adored grandmother.

Margaret Mary is survived by her children, Richard (Beth), Suzanne, Greg (Elizabeth), Blair, Maggie Hanlon, Kate Pirrung (David); son-in-law, Richard Spangenberg; 18 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Barbara, Jackie and Letty Ehland; and many nieces and nephews in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Special heart-felt gratitude to Juanita and Sheryl of Transitions Hospice of Wake County and to our earthly angel NeNe for her love, superior care and for being the hands and feet of Jesus in our lives.

A visitation was held on Monday, May 1, 2017 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Clancy Strickland Wheeler Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Raleigh.

Evelyn Halburnt Cross

Wake Forest

Evelyn Halburnt Cross, 101, died Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Evelyn was born July 2, 1915 to the late Henry and Docia Ruffner Halburnt. She was a 50-year-plus member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Raleigh.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 28, 2017, at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Cemetery in Wake Forest. The Rev. Brian Merritt officiated.

Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, O.L. Cross.

Surviving are a son, Lanny Cross and wife, Diane, of Gwinn, Michigan; a daughter, Norma C. May and husband, Richard, of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Richard Brian May and wife, Tammy, of Louisburg, Matthew David May and wife, Liz, of Wake Forest, Lee Cross and wife, Bori, of Budapest, Hungary, Randy Cross and wife, Pam, of Carmel, Indiana; and ten great- grandchildren.

Charles William ‘Bill’ Rodgers

Rolesville

Charles William “Bill” Rodgers of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Rolesville passed away April 24, 2017 after a brief illness at Wake Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was 81 years young.

Bill was born on October 1, 1935 in Stanton, Virginia, to the late Charles William Rodgers and Elise Rodgers Cram. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elise and Robert W. Cram.

Bill attended Virginia Tech University, served in the United States Air Force, and was a retired electrical technician from General Electric in Lynchburg, Virginia.

Bill’s hobbies and interest included fishing, bowling, tennis and spending time with his family. He was known for his quick whit, sense of humor and his love of man’s best friend.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. A second memorial service will be held in his home town of Lynchburg later in May with the time and location to be announced.

He was a loving husband to Georgean “Jean” Rodgers, his wife of 58 years; a wonderful father to his three daughters, Anita Stone of Morehead City, Donna Talley and husband, Mark, of Wake Forest, and Lynn McCain and husband, Bryan, of Raleigh; and a devoted Papa to three grandchildren, Danielle Talley, Jessica Talley and Dillon McCain.

The family would welcome donations to your local animal shelter. Though he will be missed, he will live on in the hearts and memories of those who loved him.

Lois S. Carpenter

Wake Forest

Lois S. Carpenter, 97, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at Transitions Hospice Home due to complications of a stroke on April 13, 2017.

Her home for the last four years has been The Lodge Retirement Community in Wake Forest. Previously, her home of 50-plus years has been Redwood Road in Durham.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Gray Carpenter Sr.; son, Willis Gray Carpenter Jr.; parents, Clem Z. and Zula W. Sherron; sisters, Mary Helen Elliott and Louise S. Hobgood; and brother, Foster Sherron.

Lois is survived by daughter, Brenda C. Evans (Jerry R. Evans); daughter-in-law, Brenda Dawson C. Haigler (Ronnie Haigler); grandchildren Monica Frye (Chad), LeDonna Paschall, Will Gray Carpenter III (Kim); six great-grandchildren, Brandon Taylor, Amber Grace Carpenter, Kayla Frye, Landon Frye, Kelly DeHart, Nick DeHart; and sister, Lessie Ligon of Burlington.

Lois was blessed to have many very special nieces and nephew in her life that she loved very much.

Lois was very active in promoting North Carolina State, Home Extension – educational programs.  Through the Extension Home Maker organization, she did volunteer work for 35 years on both the local and state level. On the local level, Redwood Home Demonstration Club was founded around 1954. She served Durham County as their president and the North Central Districts’ President. Lois received Woman of the Year award in 1976 for outstanding service on all levels.

As a very active member of Woodmen of The World Lodge 360 in Durham, she served in numerous official positions. Some of her most happy days were spent at camp week for seniors at Camp Cherrio. She made her costumes for every event scheduled for the week. She was quite the “ham” for entertainment.

In 1984, Lois served as secretary for The National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She retired after 28 years as a Postal Rural Letter Carrier.  Her career started in 1950 as the first female Rural Letter Carrier in North Carolina.

Her greatest love was traveling with On The Go Tour Group owned by Mary Ann Slater. When Willis chose to stay home Lois would go with her girlfriends.  She was not going to miss anything! She traveled to all states in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico along with many places in Europe and to Africa. She loved her community, friends, as well as her traveling buddies.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Plainview Baptist Church in Durham.

Agnes Philomena Maloney

Wake Forest

On Wednesday, April 26, 2017, the Lord called home his daughter Agnes Philomena Maloney, devoted mother of Tara, Kieran, Erin, and Aidan, devoted grandmother of Kevin, Cristian, Shane, Brittany, Trevor, Devin, Morgan, McKenna, and Emily, and devoted great-grandmother of Audrey, Hudson, and Madelyn.

Agnes was born and raised in Ireland (County Cavan), immigrating to the United States at the age of 22. She met and married her husband in New York. Kieran Maloney was also born and raised in Ireland (County Galway). She lived a prosperous and fulfilling life surrounded by her family all her days. She enjoyed hosting holiday dinners, family gatherings and shared many reminiscing stories of what it was like growing up in the rich culture and history of Ireland with her family as one of nine siblings. She had a great passion for interior decorating, gardening, painting and antiques. Her analogy of daily life always included several cups of Irish tea.

May the road rise to meet you.

May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face.

And rain fall soft upon your fields.

And until we meet again,

May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Christopher Stuart Green

Wake Forest

Christopher Stuart Green, 48, passed away Thursday, April 27, 2017. Christopher was born May 16, 1968 to the late Thomas Edward Green Jr. and Frances Carol Oakley Green. Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin sister, Pamela Christina Green, and a brother, Joseph Randall Green.

Funeral services were held at Wednesday, May 3, 2017, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial followed in Chalyebate Springs Church in Fuquay-Varina.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Melanie of Zebulon; a son, Joshua Stuart Green (Christin) of Zebulon; two grandchildren, Joshua Stuart Green Jr. and Arianna Love Green; a brother, Thomas Green (Nancy) of Selma; and three sisters, Debra Pollard (Ricky) of Willow Springs, Frances Green of Franklinton and Regina Coots (Jim) of Gore, Virginia.

Larry Arnold Eddins

Larry Arnold Eddins was born on July 30, 1958 in Houston, Texas, and departed this life on Sunday, April 23, 2017, Divine Mercy Sunday.  He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ernest and Louise Eddins; his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Pauline Howe; paternal uncle, Harold Eddins; and beloved mother, Barbara Jean Howe Eddins, whose love of Christ instilled in all her children a deep faith in God and Christ’s promise​ of eternal life.

Larry was a longtime resident of Florida, moving there in 1987, where he enjoyed his time shared with his brother, Jimmy, and most recently, his work in the Keys. He is survived by his daughters, Shannon and Ailsa; his father, Joe and stepmother Susan; brothers, Danny and Jimmy; and sister, Brenda.  Their families also mourn Larry’s passing, Danny’s wife, Marisa; children, Danny Jr. and Sandy; Jimmy’s wife, Yolanda; children Josh and Jeremy; Brenda’s husband, Jim; children Charlie, Katie, and Grace.  Family includes aunts and uncles, Joyce and Virgil Turner, Tollie and Tommy Howe, Shirley and Buddy Schroeder, and Debbi and Tommy Atkinson; along with many cousins, extended family, and friends.

Larry was an avid ocean lover as well as musician whose career included diving, work as a deep-sea fishing captain and guide, and studio musician.  His spare time was also filled with writing poetry and creating saltwater aquariums.   He generously showed his love towards those in need by sharing all he had and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  He recently rededicated his life to Christ and enjoyed the faith and fellowship at Christ Church UMC in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, near his residence with dear friends Corinne Playso and her son Craig and family.  Their kindness and friendship to Larry was a tremendous blessing especially in his most recent illness.
