Mary Linney Ducatte

Mary Linney Ducatte passed away from Alzheimer’s disease on December 24th, 2016. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Mary was very active in St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church and garden club activities.

She is survived by her husband, Ross: her four children, Elizabeth Steele (Todd), Michael (Julie), Barry, John (Stephanie); her nine grandchildren, Sara, Renee, Taylor, Brittany, Madison, Jaden, Dylan, Grayson and Hannah; her brother, Bill Linney (Nancy); her deceased brother, Joe (Barbara); and her sister, Beth Roberts. Mary was greatly loved by all and will be deeply missed.

A funeral mass was held Thursday, December 29, 2016, at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

James ‘Jimmy’ H. Jones Jr.

Feb. 16, 1944 – Dec. 24, 2016

James H. “Jimmy” Jones Jr., 72, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday December 24, 2016.

He was born in Elizabeth City, the son of the late James H. Jones Sr. and Mabel Roughton Jones. He was a member of the Bay Leaf Baptist Church.

A funeral service was held at 1 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, December 28, 2016, at Bay Leaf Baptist Church with Dr. Marty Jacumin officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Jones is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Glenda; son, Christian and his very special wife, our other daughter, Vickie Lynn; very special son-in-law, Shane Phelps; and four precious grandchildren, Wade, Kendall, Lexy and Carson, whom he loved so much.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Caroline Jones Phelps; his parents; a brother, W.R. Tillett; and a sister, Frances Ross.

In lieu of flowers gifts can be made to the Neuse Christian Academy Building Fund.

Jim’s family would like to extend their love and appreciation to the Bone Marrow Transplant Team at UNC Hospital.

Margie Brown Lloyd

Aug. 28, 1941 – Dec. 22, 2016

Margie Brown Lloyd, 75, passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Wake Medical Center. She was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Weldon and Mozeller Perkerson Brown, and was a member of Harris Chapel Baptist Church. Mrs. Lloyd was married to the late Jimmie Lloyd for 32 years. Mrs. Lloyd was preceded in death by sisters, Priscilla B. Rice and Edna Pearl Brown; and brothers, Thomas Weldon Brown and Weldon Earl Brown.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon, December 26, 2016, at Harris Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. William H. Haley officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Lloyd is survived by her daughter, Kathy Lloyd Faison and husband, Dale, of Louisburg; grandson, Jimmie Keith Faison of Louisburg; great-granddaughter, Kelli Allyn Faison of New Bern; sister, Kaye Barber and husband, Fletcher, of Raleigh; and brothers, Joseph Shyrld Brown of Louisburg, Mikeal Glenn Brown and wife, Wanda, of Zebulon .

Curtis C. Nipper

Curtis C. Nipper, born October 4, 1938 in Wake County to the late Ernest M. Nipper and Kathleen B. Nipper, passed away December 21, 2016 at Transitions LifeCare, Raleigh.

Curtis was a Methodist since the age of 13 and he was currently a member of the North Raleigh United Methodist Church in Raleigh.

Curtis began his career on October 3, 1957 as an apprentice with Leon Byrum Opticians. He graduated from Millbrook High School in 1958 and on January 18, 1966 he received his N.C. State Board of Opticians license. He opened his own eyeglasses shop, Nipper Opticians, on January 1, 1973. After dispensing eyeglasses for 46 years in the Raleigh area, he took retirement and closed Nipper Opticians.

He also served as sergeant in the N.C. National Guard for six years, was a charter member of the Northern Wake Lions Club, and a member of the Bay Leaf Volunteer Fire Dept. for 29 years; during which he served in various officer positions, including serving on the board of directors. A master workman of all trades, he’d offer his services to his friends, neighbors, and family – he could fix anything, according to his grandchildren. After retirement he enjoyed two cross-country road trips with his wife, Jean, spending time doting on his grandchildren, Nascar racing, and UNC basketball.

Leading his family by example, and exhibiting a spirit of serving others, Curtis leaves to cherish his memories his childhood sweetheart and best friend, Jean Ayscue Nipper, to whom he was married to for 57 years; sons, Michael Curtis Nipper of Seattle Washington, and Steven Carroll Nipper, and wife, Michelle, of Youngsville; grandchildren, Tyler, Hailey, Joshua, Cameron, Ady; great-granddaughter, Layla; sisters, Peggy N. Kirks (Ed), of Cary and Kathy N. Norris of Raleigh; brother, Ted E. Nipper (Anne) of Raleigh; special nieces and nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon December 27, 2016, at the North Raleigh United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Soapstone United Methodist Cemetery.

Nora Dedrick

Oct. 8, 1918 – Dec. 20, 2016

Mrs. Nora Dedrick walked through her garden to meet Jesus on December 20, 2016 after a long illness at Elmcroft of Northridge. Mrs. Dedrick was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Ray Austin Dedrick, and many family members, as she was the youngest of nine at the age of 98.

She is survived by her son, Robin Dedrick (Cynthia); grandsons, Jonathan, Jason (Michelle); great-grandson, Austin; great-granddaughter, Elizabeth; grandson, Christopher (Kami); great-granddaughter. Kaydence Rose; her daughter, Linda Bonner (Allan Jr.); step-granddaughter, Kathryn Bonner (Tracy Lanier); step-grandson, Allan III (Lisa); great-granddaughter, Ashley; step-granddaughter, Christine (Jim); great-grandsons, James and Christopher; and a number of nieces and nephews throughout the U.S. and Great Britian.

A funeral service was held at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon December 23, 2016 in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial followed in Raleigh Memorial Park.

Larry Clyde ‘L.C.’ Dillard

Larry Clyde, “L.C.”, 68, known as Daddy to two, Poppa to five, LC and C- Boy to many others, passed away on Monday evening December, 19, 2016 at his residence. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Emma Lillian Choplin Dillard and Clyde Patrick Dillard. Mr. Dillard was a retired road maintenance supervisor with the NCDOT.

A funeral service was held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, December 22, 2016, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

Mr. Dillard is survived by his wife, Joan Jackson Dillard (Momma Joan); his oldest son, Larry Clyde Dillard Jr. (Larry); his youngest son, Daniel Lee Dillard (Danny) and wife, Stacy Brogden Dillard; older sister; Jean Dillard Wilkins; younger brother; Stanley Lee Dillard; and grandchildren, Daniel Lee Dillard Jr. (Daniel), Aliah Katelyn Dillard (Katie), Destiny Faith Daniel, Patrick Hunter Dillard (Hunter) and Johnny Marshall Bunn (Johnny)

Linda Sloan Ward

May 21, 1942 – Dec. 19, 2016

Linda Sloan Ward, 74, went to be with her Lord on December 19, 2016. She was born on May 21, 1942, the daughter of Paul and Hilda Sloan. A woman who held numerous job titles, Mrs. Ward’s primary profession was that of a bank service officer. She will be fondly remembered as a faithful member and Sunday school teacher at Mount Carmel Christian Church.

A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon, January 7, 2017, at Mount Carmel Christian Church.

Mrs. Ward is survived by her husband, Charles of Franklinton; her sister, Ruby Scrika of Woodstock, Georgia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ward will be sorely missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Joyce Faye White

Wake Forest

Joyce Fay White, 76, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Wednesday, December 21, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was the daughter of the late Marietta J. Dixon and the late William Warren Haight. She was the beloved wife of the late James H. White.

Ms. White is survived by her three children, LaDonna Morgan (Derek), Charles Jackson and Janice Warren (Louis); 12 grandchildren, two of whom are deceased; one granddaughter-in-law, one grandson-in-law, 19 great-grandchildren and host of other relatives.

As a child, Ms. White was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Washington D.C.  In 1980 she joined St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Largo, Maryland, and later joined the St. Joseph’s Ladies Auxiliary No. 141.  When visiting family in North Carolina, Ms. White decided to retire to Durham, where she joined Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in 2011.  During her illness, Ms. White began to attend St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Wake Forest.

Ms. White attended Washington, D.C., public schools and later received a diploma in business from Temple Business College. Prior to moving to Maryland, she worked at Marlo’s Furniture for seven and a half years.  While living in Maryland, she worked at Prince George’s General Hospital for seventeen and a half years. It was in this career where she developed a love for nursing and inspiration to return to school. Ms. White attended Leland School of Nursing in 1987 and started work at Walter Reed Army.  After working in several pathology departments, she took a position with the office of medical examiners in Rockville Maryland. She retired after 19 years.

Joyce was an avid Washington Redskins fan since the 1960s, a season ticket owner and would sometimes travel with the team. Thanks to her son – in- law, Louis, who was a high school track and field coach, she fell in love with the sport. She became a grandma to all the track kids, and loved them all very much.

Thomas Marion Ragusa

Thomas Marion Ragusa, 71, passed away on December 23, 2016.  Born on May 27, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of Mariano Peter-Paul Ragusa and Elsie Potak. An avid reader who made numerous contributions to the editorial byline of the News and Observer, Mr. Ragusa made his living in the construction business, where he took great pride in building homes.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Mr. Ragusa is survived by his son, Mark and wife, Debbie; two grandchildren, Megan and Dillon; and his sister, Ruth.

Michael Andrew Yatsko

Apr. 6, 1925 – Dec. 25, 2016

Michael Andrew Yatsko, 91, passed away on December 25, 2016. He was born on April 6, 1925 in Throop, Pennsylvania, the son of John and Mary Yatsko. He was a World War II veteran who served in the European campaign. He graduated from Lehigh University and eventually retired as the lead engineer at AT&T-Bell Labs. He was a faithful member of St. Paul Catholic Community in Leesburg, Florida.

Mr. Yatsko is preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Yatsko, and his son, Mark Yatsko Sr.

A Mass of Resurrection was held 3 p.m. Friday, December 30, 2016, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

Mr. Yatsko is survived by his wife, Mary Yatsko; brother, Frank Yatsko; son, Mitchell Yatsko; daughters, Karen Hashimoto and Maribeth Watkins Scanlon; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Janis Wright Davis

March 14, 1949 – December 30, 2016

Janis Wright Davis, 67, passed away on December 30, 2016. She was born on March 14, 1949 in Baltimore, Maryland, the daughter of James Davis and Virginia Tull.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 14, 2017, at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, 194 Queen Street, Boone.

Ms. Davis is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Smith of Deep Gap, Shannon McCall and husband, Jim, of Lenoir, and Pamela Morkunas and husband, Mitchell, of Wake Forest; five grandchildren, Leland Dula of Deep Gap, Chase McLean and wife, Olga, of Foscoe, Brian Smith and wife, Tiffany, of West Jefferson, Timmy Smith and wife, Michaela, of Banner Elk, and Ames McCall of Lenoir; five great-grandchildren with two more great-grandchildren expected in 2017; and her stepmother, Peg Davis, of Baltimore, Maryland.

Ms. Davis was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kelsie McLean.

Doug Jones

Douglas Ryal “Doug” Jones, 66, of Raleigh passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016, after an extremely long and courageous battle with cancer.

A funeral service was held Monday, January 2, 2017, at Umstead Park United Church of Christ, 8208 Brownleigh Drive, Raleigh. Burial was held at Montlawn Memorial Park.

A native of Raleigh, Doug was born January 5, 1950, the son of John Ryals Jones and Gracie Elizabeth Horton. He was a 1968 graduate and student body president of Millbrook High School and remained very close friends with many of his classmates. He was a star athlete in track as well as a defensive blocker on the football field.

He started his college career at Elon College where he played football on scholarship. He received a bachelor of arts from Campbell College in 1972. He also attended Southeastern Seminary School of Divinity.

Doug began working at Watkins Flowers with Ken and Rachel Watkins at the age of 14 and eventually purchased the business. Under Doug’s leadership, Watkins Flowers of Distinction became one of the most successful and well respected floral design businesses in Raleigh as well the southeastern United States. As a designer, as well as in life, he could see beauty and potential beauty in anyone and everything.

Doug was a charter member of Umstead Park United Church of Christ and remained active as long as his health allowed. Doug had a passion for the inclusiveness of progressive Christianity. He was instrumental in the fundraising and purchase of the UPUCC campus. He exemplified the teachings of Christ in his welcoming and affirming generosity.

Doug is survived by his devoted spouse, Sanford “Sandy” Peter Ceppos; his pride and joy, his son, Matthew “Matt” Christopher Jones and his wife, Meredith Cottrell Jones; stepchildren, Karin Ceppos, Jaimie Francis and her husband, Charles Francis, Sara Ceppos; his four grandchildren, Allison Francis, Avery Ceppos, Elliott Francis and Michael Jones; his brothers, William “Billy” Norwood Jones and his wife, Betty, Dwight Hilliard Jones and his wife, Connie, Tommie “Don” Donald Jones and his wife, Debra. Uncle Doug was also exceptionally close with his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Dominique Nicole Privette

Dominique Nicole Privette, 23, died December 24, 2016, alongside her fiancé’, Paul Shane Pearce, in Wilson. She was born November 19, 1993 to Kenneth and Tammy Davis Privette. Dominique was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Ruby Champion and Brenda Davis.

Funeral services were  held Tuesday, January 3, 2017, at Wake Forest Church of God, 155 E. Cedar Avenue. Burial followed at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest.

Dominique is survived by her father, Kenneth Privette and Lisa Rogers; her mother, Tammy Davis Rose and husband, Charlie; brother-in-law, Tyler Joyner; sister, Jennifer Privette; grandfathers, Rickey Champion Sr. and Daniel Davis; uncles, Andy Davis and wife, Wendy, Rickey Champion Jr., and Mackie Privette and wife, Jamie; aunts, Lisa Davis, Angela Champion and husband, Brian, Ann Maness and husband, Tim, and Vanita Murray; and special friend, Ronnie Owens.
