Nathan Joel Derrick, 74, died Saturday morning at Rex Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Lee Derrick; three sons, Joel Derrick and his wife, Carri, of Creedmoor, Kam Derrick of Miami, Florida, and Jay Derrick of Wake Forest; and two grandsons, Ryan and Connor Derrick. He is also survived by a sister, Julie Epting, of Columbia, South Carolina.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, March 23, at Hope Lutheran Church at 3525 Rogers Road in Wake Forest.
Robert Lee Forrest Sr.

Robert Lee Forrest Sr. of Raleigh passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, doing what he loved – working with his bobcat tractor on a beautiful spring day. Robert, born in Raleigh, was a Raleigh police officer in the early 1960s and a U.S. Postal Service employee for 33 years; but his true calling was his side business, RL Forrest Grading. He loved his tractors, back hoes, bobcats, and dump trucks and using them to help people shape their land. Many yards and commercial properties in the area show the results of his skill. Once, when asked if he was a golfer, he said he would much rather get on a tractor and move dirt around than try to hit a little ball in a hole.
A big, strong man with a dry wit, Robert would do anything at any time, day or night, to help family, friends, and neighbors. He especially loved spending time with his family. Although he was a quiet man, he had a fearless adventurous streak. He loved horses, motorcycles, and RV camping, but piloting small aircraft was his greatest passion. He flew small planes, gliders, and experimental aircraft. He bought and taught himself to fly a Bensen gyrocopter. He even survived several accidents in his many years of flying. His favorite flying adventure was a cross-country trip in the 1980s with his wife and children (who at the time likened the trip to flying across the country on a lawnmower) in a single engine Cessna 182. They flew over Mount Rushmore, Devil’s Tower, Yellowstone, and many more sights.
A service of remembrance was held at 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon, March 20, 2016, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.
Robert is survived by his loving, supportive, and patient wife of 56 years, Margie Hawkins Forrest; daughter, Robbie Forrest of Raleigh; son, Robert Lee Forrest Jr., and his life partner, Tanya Harwood, of Cherry Grove, South Carolina; grandchildren, Adam Forrest, Mara Hartsell, and Renlee Forrest; and many cherished extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Harper Forrest and Esther Lee Forrest of Raleigh; sister, Elizabeth Jackson; brother, Bill Forrest; and father-in-law, Roy Hawkins and mother-in-law, Lois Hawkins of Raleigh.

Matthew Eric Jaskolka
Raleigh
Matthew Eric Jaskolka, infant son of John Edwin and Cynthea Wrike Jaskolka of Raleigh, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 16, 2016.
A private memorial service was in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Matthew was buried in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.
In addition to his parents, Matthew is survived by his maternal grandparents, Pete and Louise Wrike of Cobbs Creek, Virginia, and by his paternal grandparents, Eric and Judy Jaskolka of Wake Forest.

Pendleton “Pen” N. Havener
Raleigh
Pen Havener of Raleigh died peacefully on March 19, 2016. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on July 24, 1923, the son of L.C. and Virginia Mayo Havener. He graduated from South High in Worcester and Wentworth Institute in Boston. He served in World War II in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific and China theater.
He married Laura Rosebrooks in 1946 at the First Congregational Church in Sutton, Massachusetts, where both were active leaders. Laura preceded him in death along with his brother, Cliff and two sisters, Phoebe and Jinny.
He and Laura have four children; daughter, Pamela H. Hartigan and husband, David, of Raleigh; sons, Charles C. Havener and wife, Sandy, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Henry M. Havener and wife, Georgiana, of High Point and Walter R. Havener and wife, Tammy, of Chapel Hill. All of their children graduated from N.C. State University. He has seven grandchildren, Aaron, Chelsea, Laura, Sara, Halie, Paige and Grant. Pen got to meet his first great grandchild, Lily, on Christmas day.
Pen was a 32nd Degree Mason and a life member of Quinsigamond Lodge in Worcester. He was involved in the design and sale of textile machinery for his entire working career, moving to Charlotte from Sutton in 1968, where he and Laura joined Sardis Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. To be closer to family, they moved to Raleigh in 2006.
His greatest pride was his family and enjoyed fishing trips to the beach with his sons, golf in his earlier years and was an avid gardener his whole life. In Raleigh he volunteered for the North Raleigh United Methodist Church community garden with his daughter until he was 90.
The entire Havener family would like to thank his caregivers who were so vital in the last year of Pen’s life: Colleen, Diana, Stay At Home Care in Wake Forest, and all the staff at Sunrise North Hills and Transitions Life Care.

A celebration of his life will be Friday, March 25, 2016, at 1 p.m. in The Chapel at Bright Funeral Home.

Ovid Coley Barham Sr.
Rolesville
Ovid Coley Barham Sr., 92, of Rolesville died peacefully at his home on Sunday evening, March 20, 2016. Born to Oscar Thomas Barham and Mildred Coley Barham in Wake County on December 15, 1923, he was one of nine children.
Coley graduated from Rolesville High School, where he played baseball and basketball, in 1942 and attended North Carolina State University. In 1943 he was married to Mary Alice Stell of Rolesville, and the couple recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. He served in the Merchant Marine during World War II as a chief ensign for radio operations, contributed as a life-long member of the congregation of Rolesville Baptist Church, and attained the Diamond Jubilee Certificate in recognition of his more than 60 years as a Master Mason of Rolesville Lodge No. 683.
Following the war, Coley returned to North Carolina and played professional baseball in the minor leagues for several years before beginning his career as a tobacconist, working in the tobacco markets and operating his own farm.
Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock Thursday morning, March 24, 2016, at Rolesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Randy Bridges officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice; sister Barbara Ann Mitchell; sons Ovid Coley “Scooter” (Ginger) Barham Jr. and John Alan; daughter Marcia (Danal) Barham; grandchildren Ryan (Erin), Adam, Samantha, William (Claire); and one great-granddaughter, Coley. He is predeceased by three brothers and four sisters.

Martha Guinn Cureton, 92, of Louisburg passed away on Sunday evening, March 20, 2016, at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson. She was born in McDowell County, the daughter of the late Martha Elizabeth Berry Guinn and Tucker M. Guinn, and was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Edward Cureton, and a daughter, Patsy Ann Cureton
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, March 24, 2016, at the Wake Forest Cemetery with the Rev. Robert Faile officiating.
Mrs. Cureton is survived by her daughter, Linda G. Lyles and husband, Jimmy, of Louisburg; grandchildren, Kelly Lyles of Louisburg, Rachel Seagroves and husband, Jason, of Youngsville, and Jaime Lyles of Youngsville; 13 great-grandchildren, April, D.J., Steven, Zack, Jared, Nathan, Darin, Ryan, Johanna, Andrew, Jenna, Austin and Brandon; and six great-great grandchildren; Derek, Nikolas, Elijah, Emery, Evan and Jaxson.

Mary Holmes Lassiter, 75, of Wake Forest died Monday, March 21, 2016, at home after an extended illness. She was born in Wake County on February 24, 1941, the daughter of the late Eric and Henrietta Holmes.
A memorial service will be held at 2 o’clock Thursday afternoon, March 24, 2016, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.
Mary is survived by her husband, Ernest Lassiter of the home; daughters, Kim Lamando and husband, Gene, of Wake Forest and Jan Lassiter of Raleigh; granddaughter, Krista DeForest and grandson, Sean McCallie of Wake Forest; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Joan Holmes Barham and Faye Holmes VanPutte of Wake Forest; and several nieces and nephews of the area.
