Roy Colon Stephenson Jr.

Youngsville

Roy Colon Stephenson, Jr. of Youngsville passed away on February 10, 2016. He was born in Quantico, Virginia, the oldest son of the late Roy Colon Stephenson Sr. and Hilda Morehouse Stephenson. He was a graduate of Needham Broughton High School and North Carolina State University, where he was a standout on the football team.

After he spent time selling insurance with his dad, he taught high school biology and coached football. He then enjoyed more than 25 years in the restaurant industry where he was able to broaden his love of cooking.  He loved his family and the NC State Wolfpack. He hated the Tarheels and waiting in line when people moved with no urgency.  His children believed there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do or teach them, and he was the strongest man they knew.

He loved to fish and garden, even more so if he was with loved ones. Fish and backyard squirrels are breathing a collective sigh of relief as they realize they are a little safer now. Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club and Wilbur’s Barbeque are scrambling to figure out how to replace lost sales. He really listened to your response when he asked how you were doing. He could carry on a conversation with anyone and the first word many people use to describe him is kind. He gave out genuine hugs and “I love yous” freely – but with sincerity.

Mr. Stephenson is survived by his wife, Dare Powell Stephenson of Youngsville; children, Sarah Ellen Stephenson of Broomfield, Colorado, Roy C. Stephenson III of Angier, David Lucas Stephenson and wife, Kathy, of Greendale, Wisconsin, and Daniel Matthew Stephenson and wife, Daina, of Yulee, Florida. He is also survived by his step-children; Roy Johnston of Lynnewood, Washington, Dare Johnston Jr. of Hampstead, and David Johnston and wife, Jan, of Raleigh.  But, we all knew his favorite child was his rescue dog, Buddy.Fish and backyard squirrels breathed a collective sigh of relief yesterday as they realized that they would be a little safer today.
