Randolph ‘Randy’ Flynn

Wake Forest

Randolph Dean “Randy” Flynn, 57, of Wake Forest passed away Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Duke University Hospital. Randy was born in Mecklenburg County and was the owner and operator of Flynn Roofing Company.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, December 27, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Al Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Forest Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Flynn is survived by his wife, of 37 years, Deborah H. Flynn; daughter, Victoria Flynn of Wake Forest; son, David Flynn of Wake Forest; his mother, Ann Boykin Flynn of Wilson; sister, Deborah Flynn Stancil and her daughter, Laura Flynn Johnson, of Wake Forest; and brother, Michael T. Flynn and wife, Connie Flynn, and their children, Ashley and Trent Flynn, all of Wake Forest. He was preceded in death by his father, E. C. Flynn Jr.

Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to the NC Wildlife Endowment Fund, 1702 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1702.

Christopher ‘Chris’ Mark Schafer

Franklinton

Chris Schafer, 41, of Franklinton passed away on Friday, December 18, 2015, in Durham. He was born in Essex County, New Jersey, the son of Mary Halsted and the late Joseph Schafer.

A funeral service honoring his life was held at 7 o’clock Monday evening, December 21, 2015, in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Al Thomas officiating.

Chris is survived by his wife, Rayna Ferrara Schafer; his children, Ashlee, Alyssa and Amanda; his mother, Mary Halsted; a sister, Maria Santiago; a brother, Joseph Schafer; mother and father-in-law, Denise and Joseph Rizzo; sister-in-law, Danielle Rizzo; brother-in-law, Anthony Ferrara; nieces and nephews; and aunts and uncles.

Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help offset some of their unexpected expenses.

 Brenda Jean Johnson

Wake Forest

Brenda Jean Johnson, 73, of Wake Forest, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 16, 2015. She was born January 8, 1942, in Robeson County, the daughter of Marvin Bailey and Ruby Edwards Bailey. Brenda retired from the Quality Control division of Eaton.

Funeral services were held at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, December 19, 2015, in The Chapel of Bright Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Toler officiating. Burial was in Raleigh Memorial Park.

Brenda is survived by her daughter, Cathy Johnson Goodwin of Wake Forest; a son, Glenn Johnson and wife, Patricia, of Wake Forest; her mother, Ruby Edwards Bailey; five sisters, Jewel Parrish of Creedmoor, Ida Greenhill of Bahama, Barbara Evans of Durham, Gail Turner of Creedmoor, and Carol Wright of Durham; a brother, Robert Bailey Sr. of Bolivia; grandchildren, Matthew Bailey and wife, Stephanie, Jeremy Goodwin, Jennifer Johnson, and Erin Johnson; and great-grandchildren, Zain Bailey, Dante Barra and Chien Nguyen. She is preceded in death by her father, Marvin Bailey; her husband, Emmett Johnson; her daughter, Joyce Johnson; and two brothers, Douglas and Dalton Bailey.

Memorial donations in Brenda’s memory may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Alfred Emile Vervaert

Raleigh

Alfred Emile Vervaert, 69, of Raleigh died Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at Duke University Hospital. Alfred retired from the U.S. EPA after 32 years of service as a chemical engineer. He was a U.S. Army veteran and an avid Duke basketball fan who loved playing tennis and vacationing at Wrightsville Beach.

A celebration of life was held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon, December 20, 2015/ in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home.

Alfred is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carol E. Vervaert; son, Geoffrey Alexander Vervaert of Cary; daughter, Christine Marie Vervaert of Wilmington; sister, Claire M.V. Lemieux of Raleigh; twin brother, Louis Vervaert of West Simsbury, Connecticut; and two grandchildren, Emily Brooke Vervaert and Tyler Ashton Vervaert.

 Lisa Marie Ortuno

Wake Forest

Lisa Marie Ortuno of Wake Forest passed away on December 16, 2015. She was the daughter of Joyce and George Meeker, born on Fort Stewart army base in Hinesville, Georgia. She grew up in Smyrna, Georgia, and spent the majority of her higher education and professional life in Columbia, South Carolina and Wake Forest, North Carolina.

A memorial service honoring her life was held at 10 o’clock Monday morning, December 21, 2015, in The Chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial was in Historic Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.

Lisa earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Kennesaw State College, followed by a master’s and doctorate degree in molecular biology from the University of South Carolina. Her passion was in genetics, which she applied in her career while working with Illumina, Applied Biosystems, and Promega, the three most prominent genetic research and development corporations in the world.

She became a devout Baha’i in 2004 in Columbia, where she quickly became an active and engaged member of the community. Many of these relationships continued to flourish when she moved to Wake Forest and became active and engaged in the Baha’i community there.

Lisa is survived by her father George, her brothers Jason and Chris, and her children Ben, Joseph, and Zoe.

Veronica Catherine Tordai

Louisburg

Veronica Catherine Tordai, 75, of Louisburg, died Wednesday, December 16, 2015, at Wake Medical Center. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and was a Supervisor with AT & T for 10 years, retiring in 1987.  Mrs. Tordai was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church.

There are no services planned locally.

Mrs. Tordai is survived by her husband, Zoltan Tordai of Louisburg; and brother, Joseph Guinan of California.

Calvin Anderson Ray Sr.

Wake Forest

Calvin Anderson Ray, 90, of Wake Forest passed away on Wednesday December 16, 2015 at The Raleigh Rehab and Health Center. He was born in Wake County, the son of the late Oma Arnold Ray and Sidney Ray. Calvin was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Hughes and her husband, Keith, of Creedmoor; a son, Andy Ray of Wake Forest; grandchildren, LeAnn, Mindy, Sara, Jason and his wife, Amy, Anderson, Forrest, Hunter, Callie Beth and Lance; and a great-grandson, Gauge. He was preceded in death by his wife Madeline Cash Ray.

Margaret Kathy Chikos

Wake Forest

December 2, 1922 – December 21, 2015

Margaret Kathy Chikos, 93, of Wake Forest died Monday, December 21, 201 at Transitions Hospice in Raleigh. Margie was born December 2, 1922, in Gary, Indiana, to the late Stefan and Susan Figular Rusnak. She was employed in the photography department at Newberry’s Department Store in Gary in her early adult life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Chikos, her parents, a sister, and four brothers.

Surviving are two daughters, Paula Chikos of Wake Forest and Brenda Bell of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Brett, Niki and Caroline; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
