Nov. 5 deadline for award nominations

Time is running out to nominate a person or a group that you think have made special contributions to the town of Wake Forest this year or for many years. You have until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 5, to submit a nomination for the Citizen of the Year, the Club or Organization of the Year, and the Peggy Allen Lifetime Achievement Award.

In 1965 Eleanor Reid was elected the Citizen of the Year, and in 1977 the Organization of the Year was added when the Wake Forest Garden Club was elected. The Peggy Allen Award, honoring the longtime editor of The Wake Weekly who was a member of almost every organization in town, was begun in 2005 and awarded posthumously to Allen.

The nominations will be considered by the members of the Wake Forest Community Council during its meeting on Nov. 12 and voting is by secret ballot.

The winners will be announced during the annual Community Christmas Dinner at The Forks Cafeteria, which this year will be held on Monday, Dec. 1, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the dinner, $15 each, are available now at the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce and the Wake Forest Historical Museum.

The recipient of the Peggy Allen Award is an individual who has a record of at least 10 years of service to the greater Wake Forest Community. In 2013 the award was presented to Durward Matheny.

The Citizen of the Year Award is presented to a person who during the past year has demonstrated exemplary volunteer efforts, possesses the highest standards of responsibility in civic life, has helped in the promotion of the public welfare, and personally worked with distinction to benefit Wake Forest. Last year’s Citizen of the Year was Louis Mullinger.

The Organization of the Year Award was established to honor a club or organization which serves the Wake Forest Community. The nominated organization should have contributed significantly to the quality of life in Wake Forest. The 2013 Club of the Year was the Classic and Antique Charity Car Show.

Nomination forms should returned in a sealed envelope addressed to: Community Council Attn: Carolyn Furr, WF Chamber of Commerce, 350 S. White St, Wake Forest, NC 27587. Forms must be received by the end of business on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

The Wake Forest Community Council is comprised of area civic, service, social, fraternal, religious, and business organizations, as well as interested individuals. It is dedicated to the improvement of life in the Wake Forest community. For information about council membership, contact Council Chair Ed Morris at 919-556-2911 or communitycouncilwf@gmail.com or visit: http://www.wakeforestnc.gov/community-council.aspx.  Membership is $10 per year; only groups or individuals who pay by June are eligible to vote in November.

The council meets between September and May at noon every second Wednesday and meetings are held to about an hour. People are encouraged to purchase lunch to eat during the meeting to thank Karen and Don Winstead, who provide the free meeting room.
