Bridges home returns for Six Sundays

Wake Forest native Suzanna “Neeley” Bridges and partner Andy Jobe, the two parts of “Walking for Pennies,” will headline Sunday afternoon’s Six Sundays in Spring in E. Carroll Joyner Park beginning at 5 p.m. The name refers to the time when they walked dogs for rent and food money, literally walking for pennies. Their music is a mix of folk, soul and bluegrass delivered with two voices, one guitar and one mandolin.

The concerts are free. Food vendors will be on site. Bring the children, the dog, the neighbors, a picnic along with lawn chairs and blankets.

New virtual cemetery tour

Wonder what is new in the Wake Forest Cemetery? Would you believe a virtual tour?

In advance of the real Wake Forest Cemetery Tour on May 10, the Cemetery Advisory Board, the Public Works Department and the MIS Department pooled their information and expertise to produce the interactive video tour which shows an aerial view of the cemetery with eight red icons. By clicking on the icons, viewers can see the gravestone, a picture of the person buried there and a brief biography.

This first iteration features eight notable people beginning with Wake Forest College’ first president, Samuel Wait; Thomas J. Byrnes, Wake Forest College graduate, New York Yankees pitcher, and Wake Forest mayor; and Sophie Lanneau, member of the first graduating class at Meredith College and Baptist missionary to China.

Betty Pearce, the administrative assistant at Public Works, said the plan is to add more and more people and rotate the groups of eight on a regular basis.

Next month’s First Friday Flix will feature ‘42,’ a sports film about the racial integration of Major League Baseball by Jackie Robinson, who wore the number 42 throughout his major league career.

Offered on the first Friday evening of each month, First Friday Flix features a variety of film favorites and genres, including art, children’s and family films, as well as comedies, dramas, thrillers and more – often with a seasonal or historical theme.
