Neck of the Woods returns July 15

The Wake Forest Renaissance Centre for the Arts welcomes the return of the “Neck of the Woods” performance series on Friday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Presented and sponsored by Wake Forest ARTS, Neck of the Woods is a variety performance series featuring emerging local artists. Each show is different and may consist of several performing arts acts, including actors, dancers, musicians, comedians, writers and spoken word artists.

The July 15 installment of Neck of the Woods will feature the Blue Moon String Quartet; old-time bluegrass band DryBread Road; storyteller Ken Grant; and singer/musician Pat Tyler.

Assembled in February 2015, the Blue Moon String Quartet is comprised of Hollis Brown (first violin), Angela DiPaolo (second violin), Megan Maloney (viola), and Jeff Mahrer (cello). With a repertoire that incorporates multiple genres and artists such as The Beatles, Adele, Mozart, Coldplay and many more, the group aspires to delight audiences of all ages and musical tastes.

DryBread Road is comprised of Rick and Bette Newsome, a Triangle-based duo playing a rich acoustic blend of favorites from old-time, bluegrass, popular, folk, rock n’ roll, blues, country, and Cajun music. DryBread Road won second place in the 2015 North Carolina State Fair Folk Festival and received additional awards in previous years, including first place in the 2014 adult vocal category.

Ken Grant has been telling stories to family and friends for most of his life and began telling publicly in 2013 at the Laurinburg Bold-Faced Liars Showdown. Since then he has worked hard to develop his craft. This work paid off at the 2016 Showdown when he was runner up in the competition. Ken’s stories mostly begin with actual experiences he has had during jobs on Mississippi riverboats, pipeline construction, and 21 years in the Army.

Rounding out the evening’s entertainment is vocalist and acoustic guitarist Pat Tyler. Originally from Suffolk, Virginia, Pat began by providing entertainment for various private and civic groups as well as festivals, one of which was the Suffolk Peanut Festival where she was a part of their entertainment for several years. Pat brings a strong collection for listeners, performing a variety of 70’s, 80’s and today’s hits. Her pop acoustic playlist is comprised of popular artists such as James Taylor, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, John Denver, Joni Mitchell, The Beatles, and more.

Area residents are invited to come out, enjoy a truly unique and entertaining community event and show your support for our local artists. Refreshments will be available for purchase, including a variety of beer and wine.

Tickets are $5 (plus tax) and may be purchased online at www.wakeforestnc.gov/tickets-events.aspx or at the Renaissance Centre Box Office, 405 S. Brooks St. For more information, visit www.wakeforestnc.gov/neck-of-the-woods.aspx or call 919-435-9458.
