Museum chosen for sports exhibit

The Wake Forest Historical Museum has been chosen as one of very few organizations in North Carolina and the nation to host a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution, “Hometown Teams: How Sports Shape America.”

The exhibit will be on display at the North Main Street museum from Thursday, April 16, through Sunday, May 31. The museum will be open seven days a week for the duration of the exhibit, and admission is free to everyone.

On Sunday, May 3, there will be a free public program when WRAL-TV’s Tarheel Traveler Scott Mason will be at the museum.

Because of the increased hours and the Smithsonian’s requirement that there be at least two trained attendants with the exhibit during the public hours, Ed Morris, the museum’s director, is enlisting local people to take the brief training and volunteer at least a few hours. He and Assistant Director Jennifer Smart are the only paid staff at the museum.

Morris and Smart are also soliciting sponsorships to help defray some of the cost of the exhibit. Tuesday the Wake Forest Historical Association board voted to become a sponsor at the $500 level.

Call the museum at 919-556-2911 or email either Morris or Smart: morrisce@wfu.edu or the_smarts@yahoo.com.
