Men in gray van still sought

There have been no more sightings of two men in a gray van or SUV who were suspected of trying to lure children into the vehicle – or at least none reported to police.

There had been at least three such incidents that the Wake Forest Police Department was investigating when the Gazette reported on a press conference and plea for cooperation in the Jan. 28 issue, but no children were harmed and ran to tell their parents about the encounters.

This week the town’s public information officer, Bill Crabtree, said the town was continuing to encourage people to report suspicious activity when they witness it.

“We recently created a new page on our website designed to encourage area residents to help prevent crime by reporting suspicious events,” Crabtree said. “The page is located at http://www.wakeforestnc.gov/reporting-suspicious-activity.aspx.”

In an unrelated incident but one that occurred in the same January timeframe as the events above, the Wake Forest Police Department late last week said it was stopping its investigation into an alleged incident in the Bowling Green subdivision on Jan. 26. The decision to drop the investigation, police officials said, was made at the insistence of the alleged victim’s family members and after investigators were unable to substantiate the juvenile’s story.

She had claimed she was approached by a man in dark clothing wearing a mask who forced her to take some pills, which she swallowed. Afterward, she ran to a nearby where the homeowner called police.

She was taken to WakeMed for testing and observation, but a toxicology test found no drugs or medication of any kind.
