Memorial Day events and ceremonies

The members of Wake Forest Memorial Post 846 VFW plan three ceremonies for Memorial Day and will also decorate veterans’ graves with American flags.

The VFW members and many volunteers will meet Saturday, May 28, between 8 and 9 a.m. at the American Legion Post, 225 East Holding Avenue, for coffee and doughnuts and then fan out across the northern Wake area to visit fifteen area cemeteries and place more than 1,500 American flags on every veteran’s grave. More volunteers are welcome.

Also on Saturday and on Sunday, VFW members will distribute Buddy Poppies at the Wake Forest Wal-mart between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

On Monday, May 30, Memorial Day, VFW members will begin the day with a ceremonial flag-raising at The Lodge retirement home at 1151 South Main Street at 7:45 a.m. The public is invited to this ceremony as well as the second flag-raising at The Gardens retirement home at 121800 Spruce Tree Way in Raleigh at 1:30 p.m.

The major ceremony for the day will take place at the Wake Forest Veterans Memorial near the Heritage golf course clubhouse on Heritage Club Avenue. They are planning a program including patriotic music, singing of the national anthem, addresses by local veteran groups, the laying of a wreath and the playing of Taps.

Everyone is invited to attend this ceremony, and there is ample parking beside the memorial.
