On Monday, May 4, Fred Smith Company will begin preliminary work on the Ligon Mill Road widening and other improvements from South Main Street to the Walmart driveway. The company was the low bidder for the work on the town street.
The first work will include installing project signs and silt and tree protection fencing as well as moving equipment to the site.
The project, which has been several years in the making, will widen the two-lane street to a four-lane road with a median, add left-turn lanes, bike lanes, curb and gutter and extra-wide sidewalks. Also, crosswalks, pedestrian signals and dedicated left, through and right-turn lanes will be installed at the South Main Street intersection.
These improvements are designed to significantly improve the mobility and safety of this corridor. Decorative stone retaining walls will also be installed to enhance the visual appearance of the area. Ligon Mill Road will remain open for two-way traffic during the construction, but periodic lane closures will be necessary. All lane closures will occur outside of the peak travel periods and only occur weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will not be performed over holidays or holiday weekends.
Once construction begins, motorists should expect periodic delays until the project is completed, but access will be maintained at all times to all adjacent businesses.
A 2014 Wake Forest Bond Referendum initiative, the Ligon Mill Road project is expected to be completed in late 2021. The total cost of the project is approximately $6 million.

While traffic on 1A is down some because of the coronavirus lock down 9 to 4 is not all non-peak travel for 1A. The lunch hour(s) is quite busy and lane closures during that time will greatly impact travel in the area, and therefore, access to the various businesses. Stopping traffic on Ligon Mill will most certainly back onto 1A.
