Juneteenth essay contest for youth

The Northeast Community Coalition is sponsoring an essay contest for the Juneteenth Celebration, asking youth from 16 to 23 for live in the Northeast Community to write a one-page essay expressing how Nipsey Hussle (Grammy-nominated rapper Ermias Aschedom) inspired them and describing a community project they would like to coordinate that would uplift the Northeast End Community.

The typed essays must include the full name, address, email address, mailing address and contact number, and the deadline is June 15. The reward is $100 and the assistance (within reason) in accomplishing that community project.

Juneteenth commemorates the day in June 1865 when the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom. The news came two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and six months after Congress passed the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, formally abolishing slavery.

Members of the Northeast Community Coalition and their partners are inviting everyone to join them on Saturday, June 22, near the Alston-Massenburg Center at 416 North Taylor Street for the Freedom March at 12:15 p.m. followed by an afternoon of celebrating with food and friendship.

The free event will include a Kids Zone, vendors, food, games, music, dancing and giveaways.
