Joyner Park Community Center officially opens

You’re invited to the official grand opening of the Joyner Park Community Center Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will serve as the official opening of the new 32,000-square-foot community center and the adjacent playground.

Saturday’s event will include a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony, tours of the facility until 2 p.m., a fitness fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., class demonstrations and light refreshments.

The occasion will also offer attendees the opportunity to obtain a Rec Card which is now required to access amenities offered at all Wake Forest parks and rec facilities, including the Joyner Park Community Center. Rec Cards are free for Wake Forest residents, but the following fees apply for people who live outside the Wake Forest town limits and do not pay Wake Forest property taxes: Individual – $25; Family, $50 – Drop-in fee – $5.

To obtain a Rec Card during the JPCC grand opening, you must first create an online profile at https://wakeforestnc.recdesk.com. Then, on Saturday, have your picture taken and present proof of residency at one of the Rec Card stations inside the new community center. Acceptable forms of proof include a valid picture ID with your current address, a current utility bill with your street address, or other document that includes your full name and address.

Area residents may visit Wake Forest park and rec facilities any time, but a Rec Card is required to access the amenities, such as open gym times, cardio equipment and walking track. Anyone who qualifies for a Rec Card but does not want one must pay the $5 drop-in fee to use these amenities.

The Joyner Park Community Center will officially open for business Monday, Oct. 21. Normal operating hours will be Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays, 1 to 5 p.m.

Situated in E. Carroll Joyner Park at 701 Harris Road, the town’s second community center is designed to blend in with current Joyner Park structures and the natural habitat. The facility features a walking track, gymnasium for basketball, volleyball and pickleball, multi-purpose rooms, dance studio and kitchen. It also houses the staff offices for the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department.

A 2014 Wake Forest Bond Referendum initiative, the center will account for just over $11 million of the $14.2 million worth of parks and recreation facility projects town voters approved in November 2014. The other parks and recreation initiatives include the Joyner Park playground and amphitheater band shelter cover and renovations to the Northern Wake Senior Center.
