Free concerts in the park

Spend an evening in Wake Forest with family and friends and enjoy some foot-tapping, finger snapping good times during two upcoming concerts at E. Carroll Joyner Park, 701 Harris Road.

Steph Stewart & The Boyfriends will perform the first concert on Sunday, Aug. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m., while the second performance will feature Lakota John & Kin on Sunday, Sept. 6. Both performances are free and open to the entire community.

Fronted by singer-songwriter Steph Stewart on guitar and banjo, Steph Stewart & the Boyfriends also features Omar Ruiz-Lopez on fiddle and mandolin, Mario Arnez on guitar and Nicholas Vandenberg on upright bass. Together, they deliver a haunting sound fusing old Appalachia and top-shelf Americana. The band also released a new album, Nobody’s Darlin’ earlier this year.

Area residents are encouraged to bring a picnic, leashed pets, a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music. Concert-goers are reminded that alcoholic beverages, smoking, firearms and unleashed pets are prohibited at Joyner Park.

In the event of inclement weather, the concert may be relocated to the Wake Forest Renaissance Centre, 405 S. Brooks St. Updated concert information will be available by 3 p.m. on the day of the concert on Wake Forest TV 10 and the town’s Facebook page and by calling the Wake Forest Weather Line at 919-435-9569. Smart phone users who have downloaded the town’s app will receive a push notification message informing them of any schedule changes. The Aug. 2 and Sept. 6 “Concerts in the Park” are presented by PineCone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music, and co-sponsored by the Wake Forest Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department; United Arts of Raleigh & Wake County; and Wake Forest ARTS.
