On Sunday, September 28, the Wake Forest Historical Association will present a forum featuring four local men who fought in World War II and came home to their family and friends or experienced war through their family.
Retired Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court I. Beverly Lake Jr. will be the moderator for the panel made up of Herman Choplin (Battle of the Bulge and Patton’s Army), the Montague brothers, Billy and Bobby (their brother Wilson was shot down over Germany), Elrie Walton (who not only fought in Europe but remained in the U.S. Army to fight in Korea and Vietnam), and Willis H. Winston (Guadalcanal).
Several other World War II veterans have been invited and may share their experiences.
The forum is being held in conjunction with the current museum exhibit, Wake Forest in World War II, showing some of the ways people left at home were affected by the war and highlighting the sacrifices local men and women made as they served in the armed forces.
The forum will be held at the Wake Forest Historical Museum on North Main Street from 3 to 5 p.m. It is free to everyone and there will be refreshments. There is parking on both sides of the block where the museum stands behind the Calvin Jones House, parking along North Main and in the rear of the museum.
