Find the Relay at Art After Hours

There will be special events and a widespread display of student art sponsored by Wake Forest ARTS during Friday night’s Art After Hours in downtown Wake Forest.

You will find the student art in the following shops: Wake Forest Elementary art will be in the NC Specialty Shop, Richland Creek Elementary will be in the Storyteller’s Book Store, Heritage Elementary and representatives from Wake Forest ARTS will be in Ollies, and Wake Forest Middle will be in B&W Hardware.

Volunteers from the North Raleigh Wake Relay for Life will be in some stores to accept donations for the event and show people how they can honor loved ones battling cancer or remember those lost to cancer.

Pam Jay at Next Consignment Boutique is one of the store owners supporting the Relay for Life. “We are donating 10 percent of that day’s sales to the American Cancer Society,” Jay said. “That night there will be a spot set up in the store for donations or luminary orders in honor of survivors and in memory of loved ones lost. The luminaries will be lit at the North Raleigh Wake Forest Relay for Life event on May 16th at Heritage High School. Look for the purple ribbon on our door this Friday. You can find out more about the event at Heritage High School at http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLCY15SA?pg=entry&fr_id=64816.”

Another event will take place at Sunflower Studio on East Jones Avenue where well-known local artist and former teacher Billy Farmer will be exhibiting his latest paintings and the studio will throw him a “surprise” 80th birthday party complete with cake. The reception will be from 5 to 9 p.m. with food, wine and music by Mister Felix.

The resident artists at the Artist Loft and Gallery above the Wake Forest Coffee Company are inviting people to come and meet guest artist Ophelia Staton, a Creedmoor resident middle school teacher who will demonstrate her art journaling and mixed media. In addition to the reception Friday night, Staton will teach a workshop on those techniques Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Find out more at their new website, www.wfartistsloft.com.

The Cotton Company will host a reception for sculptor Allen Weaver and his series of muses on pedestals resembling Roman columns. The reception will be from 6 to 9 p.m. The sculptures will be available for purchase and will be on display until May 3.

Art After Hours is presented by Wake Forest Downtown Inc., and most studios, shops and restaurants are open late the second Friday night of the month. The event includes free horse and carriage rides.
