Enjoy summer’s bounty at the market

Like a red tide, summer’s tomatoes spread across the tables at the Wake Forest Farmers Market almost matched by the dark blue of the blueberries in other vendors’ booths.

You have to enjoy them now – digging out the recipes for gazpacho and tomato salads, looking through cookbooks for the blueberry crumble recipes – though you can freeze blueberries into hard little marbles that will remind you of summer during a dreary November day. Tomatoes? Try for homemade sauces that drive away the chill when it snows in January.

The Wake Forest market – open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon in the parking lot behind CVS – will be filled with all of summer’s abundance this Saturday, including sweet corn, potatoes, squash in all its varieties, green onions, watermelons, cantaloupes, carrots, peppers, beans, peas and herbs.

One of the vendors, Walk Ahead Farm, is now offering turkey meat along with rabbit, goat, chicken, duck and pork. They also have duck and chicken eggs. Chickcharney Farm also offers chicken and duck eggs along with chicken, duck and turkey meat.

Variety is the watchword for this farmers market where you can find lotus and water lilies for your garden water feature along with hand-crafted wooden furniture, locally produced cheeses, honey courtesy of at least three apiaries, gluten-free baked goods, sweet baked goods and varieties of breads, pasta and sauces, cut flowers, jewelry, knit goods and peacock feathers. And there is always something new each week. Look for it.

Kyle Scobie will be the featured musician this week. Remember the market does not pay the musicians; show your appreciation by leaving a few bills in the tip jar.
