Dirt Day on town board’s agenda

One of the items on the agenda when the Wake Forest Town Board meets on Tuesday, Jan. 21, is a request from Wake Forest Downtown to close part of South White Street on April 2 for Dirt Day.

Lisa Newhouse, the town’s downtown director, said the slogan for the day is “Dirt Days . . . Get Up, Get Out, Get Dirty.” It is a festival focused on getting people outdoors with demonstrations about beekeeping, gardening, cooking healthy, and activities such as Zumba and yoga. There will be activities for children along with landscaping vendors and local entertainment.

The commissioners will be asked to approve or disapprove a special use permit for the Wake Forest Charter Academy and a rezoning and master plan for the Regency at Heritage subdivision on Forestville Road. There will be a public hearing that was continued from Dec. 17 about a petition for contiguous annexation for that 23-acre subdivision.

Another petition for annexation could be approved, this one for the Homestead at Heritage subdivision which was approved in June. The 73 acres are now being clearcut and re-contoured.

The commissioners will appoint one candidate to the planning board, elect a mayor pro tem and appoint themselves to committees.

They almost certainly will approve an installment purchase agreement to pay for the renovation of the Holding Park Pool, approve a school zone on East Perry Avenue for the Richland Creek Elementary School temporary campus and approve lowering the speed zone requested by NC DOT to lower the speed on North Wingate Street from 35 to 25 mph.
