Delivery better, but accident ignored

An informal nonscientific survey this week showed that mail delivery by carriers from the Wake Forest Post Office has improved in some areas and is irregular in some places. However, a new report this week chronicled almost two months of non-response from the Wake Forest postmaster and others.

In early December a carrier called “Pastor Ron” backed into her garage door with a Ryder rental truck while trying to deliver a very small package. Since she lives at the end of cul-de-sac, she does not understand why they were in her driveway.

Since then she has called the Wake Forest Post Office repeatedly, almost daily. Sometimes the line was always busy; sometimes she reached a person who promised to relay the message to the postmaster. When she went to the post office on Dec. 30, Acting Postmaster Tammy McKay aid she was not aware of the accident and “Pastor Ron” had not told her about it.

The woman sent McKay the photos of the damage via email on Jan. 4 and Jan. 12. Finally on Jan. 13 McKay said in an email that “Pastor Ron” was absent and she would speak to him when he returned. Hearing nothing else, the woman followed up with another email to McKay on Jan. 20 and received an out-of-the-office response: “I will be out of the office 01/02/2014 thru 02/11/2014.  [Highlights added.] If you need further assistance you can contact Damieon Scott 757 880-5478 (cell) or 919 552-1046/8754.”

On that same day, Jan. 20, the woman forwarded McKay’s message to another staff member at the post office she had talked with before, asking for Scott’s email. There was no response. On Jan. 24 she tried calling those phone numbers for Scott and learned one number was for the Fuquay-Varina Post Office. When she reached someone in Wake Forest with another number, she was told Scott no longer works in Wake Forest.

What is going on inside the Wake Forest Post Office? A message three years out of date? Reference to a person who no longer works there? All from a postmaster who only arrived in late November?

The Gazette has referred the woman, who lives in a subdivision on the east side of town, to District Manager David Webster in the Greensboro office and to U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis’ Raleigh office and given her phone numbers for them.

However, things were a little brighter for people who answered the survey. Here are their comments.

“We stood outside in drizzly rain to chat with Ted who said he is our regular carrier.  We are the end of the route and mail arrives about 4:30 which is better than before. Wish it was earlier but this is much better – earlier and a regular carrier. Hope it changes all the misdelivered mail. Perhaps the mail woes of others will go away.”

And “Our delivery has been pretty good lately; not nearly as much
misdelivered mail as sometimes in the past.”

Also “I’m on Rogers Road, Rolesville and the mail is not delivered at a regular time.  Sometimes it’s noon or after; sometimes it’s late – quite late.”

She added, “Certainly hope we can have regular hours at the Rolesville Post Office; so inconvenient for it to close from 12:40 until 2:30 and then close at 4:00.  We would like a full time post office!”

And, “Ours is coming around 4:30 for several days now.”

Finally, “We had the mail delivered before 5 for a few days but now it is back to after 8.”

  1. The service at 615 N. Wingate St. WF is still sporadic. One day it’s 5:30PM or it could be after 8:30PM before we get our mail. There have been days when the mail was not delivered (no one on the entire block received mail). I know my mother has the same problem at 811 Elizabeth Ave WF has the same problem. She is on the same route as I am. To get our mail on a regular time schedule is not happening. We often leave mail to be picked up but take it in after 6PM, not knowing if or when the mail carrier will arrive. The Town of WF deserves better. I can’t help but wonder why the town officials haven’t tried to get to the bottom of the problem. I am sure they are aware of the problem.
