COVID data lags due to Thanksgiving holiday

By George Shaw

Summary

This week will have only summary updates as much of the data is lagging because of the recent Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Complete coverage will resume next week.

The data available depicts declines in most metrics at the North Carolina and Wake County levels, figures that may be revised upwards during the next several days. The number of new cases was up in both zip codes 27587 and 27596.

North Carolina

The number of reported tests declined by 17% in the last seven days. This reflects the four-day hiatus in reporting over the recent holiday weekend. We  shall update the figure with more current data next week.

Reported new cases declined 7% and deaths decreased 38% in the last week. These metrics are not updated after they are submitted. The number of deaths is probably significantly understated with the Thanksgiving break. It is likely there will be a spike in both metrics next week.

Hospitalizations rose to 1,157, a level last reached on October 22.  This figure is also likely to be revised higher.

Wake County, Wake Forest, Rolesville and Youngsville

Reported new cases decreased 4% in Wake County during the last seven days. Despite the lag in reporting, new cases in zip code 27587 increased from 115 to 123. They also rose in zip code 27596 from 27 to 43. New cases remained at 17 in zip code 27571. However, deaths in Wake County remained at three during the last week. No new fatalities were reported for our three zip codes.

Forecast

The North Carolina forecast for the virus from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) was updated on November 17. The outlook is more optimistic than previous estimates. The biweekly update is expected late today. This blog will cover the update next week.
