Shorty’s is 100 years old this year and the current owner, Bill Joyner, Shorty’s nephew, will talk about the hot dog and sandwich shop which is a mainstay of downtown Wake Forest, the subject of memory and myth for graduates, on Sunday, Oct. 2, in the Wake Forest Historical Museum on North Main Street. The Wake Forest Historical Association is sponsoring the meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. and will provide refreshments after Joyner speaks.
You are encouraged to come with your Shorty’s memories. No one may be old enough to remember when Shorty’s had two barber chairs along with the pool tables. There may be some around who remember the fire in the Collegiate Theater which Shorty owned and which was in the location of today’s Shorty’s. There was an explosion followed by a fire which local policeman D.J. Brown noticed and summoned Fire Chief John Taylor. There was a drizzle of rain which helped the students and the entire volunteer fire department put out the blaze before it spread to Jones Hardware or the Chevrolet garage, the businesses on either side. Shorty rebuilt the theater with all new equipment and 400 seats. It remained in business until shortly after the college moved to Winston-Salem in 1956. With no movie business, Shorty moved the restaurant to the space, where its been ever since.

Her mayorship, that’s Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones has a new gig. She’s already the go-to person to cut a ribbon or throw out a ball or emcee an event. Now she’s getting into hockey, and not for the first time because there is a vague memory of similar event a while back. Anyway on Saturday, Sept. 17, she dropped the honorary puck at the home opener for the United States Premier Hockey League’s Carolina Eagles faced the Richmond Generals. The Carolina Eagles are a tier three junior hockey team. No report yet about the game score. The Eagles play at the MVP Sports Factory on South Main Street.
