Members of the Wake Forest Lions Club will be at the 2018 Kids Helping Kids Festival at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 6, at Laurel Hills Community Center, 3808 Edwards Mill Road, to help with free vision screening for children. The festival is sponsored by the Bryce Martin Foundation. Tickets are $10 but families with visually impaired members can attend for free. All the proceeds will go toward helping families with visually impaired children.

Wake Forest is waiving the need for a permit if you want to build a fence.
If you own your house or townhouse and want to build a fence around it or part of your property, you no longer have to apply for and get a permit from the Town of Wake Forest. The new policy began May 1 of this year.
You will have to obtain a permit and pay the $100 fee if you plan to encroach on an easement. Also, neighborhoods where a permit is required include neighborhoods planning to fence a common area, apartment complexes and non-residential uses.
Fence permits for anyone requiring an encroachment can send their plan to the electronic plan review portal at www.wakeforestnc.gov/electronic-plan-review.aspx.

The biennial Wake Forest Historic Christmas Tour will be held Saturday, Dec. 1, from 1 to 7 p.m., and the home tour committee within the Wake Forest Historic Preservation Commission has begun work. The tour always needs new and interesting historic or old homes and businesses. If you think your house or business qualifies, send a note to Senior Planner Michelle Michael at mmichael@wakeforestnc.gov.

The historic preservation commission also set up a steering committee recently to help Michael with the rehabilitation of the Ailey Young House on North White Street. Members are Dianne Laws, Roger Shackleford, Jennifer Smart, Beverly Whisnant and Patrick Schell. Michael is in the process of applying for grants from the National Trust for Historic Preservation African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund to help with the rehabilitation of the house (the roof is in urgent need of repair) and the second to help with site development, landscaping and architectural plans.
