As you travel around the area, say on Rogers Road between Wake Forest and Rolesville, you will notice that the subdivisions roll by in an uninterrupted stream of houses but then you see a sign saying “Rolesville” or “Wake Forest.” Travel Burlington Mills Road and it is the same. And then there are the subdivisions out east on N.C. 98.
The two towns have begun a discussion about their boundaries, with the need highlighted by the intentional Wake Forest annexation this year of about 15 acres in a subdivision. Rolesville Mayor Ronald Currin has been quoted as saying his town will receive an area of about the same size, probably Jones Dairy Elementary School and some adjoining properties.
The problem is that there are different maps for the area – Wake County’s urban service area, the current Wake Forest-Rolesville annexation agreement – which do not match up. And sprawling subdivisions can run from one territory into another.
When asked about the problem, Wake Forest Town Manager Kip Padgett responded with a long email: “Our annexation agreement with Rolesville is up for renewal in March. We have been having some preliminary conversations about changes to the map, making sure it lines up with Raleigh at the southern end and with Wake County’s urban service area.
“All these can lead to confusion about which takes precedence when you are looking at annexing land, especially when the boundary cuts through a property that is owned by the same person.
“We all felt this was a good time to clean everything up and make sure the lines follow reasonable geographic features, such as roads, and also lines up with Wake County’s urban area boundary.
“In regards to the school, Rolesville has indicated some things they would like to add to their area. No decisions have been made and we are not at a point in the process to fully investigate the pros and cons. We are planning to discuss it with our Board at the January retreat.”
