Blueberries and microgreens at the market

Blueberries and microgreens will be at the Wake Forest Farmers Market this Saturday, July 5, and in weeks to come. And Market Manager Robin Hendricks says there are two new vendors poised to join the market.

Market regulars are familiar with Louise and Shirley Jackson and their plump blueberries and raspberries as well as the tomatoes they offer each summer as long as the blueberries last.

But the microgreens will be at the market all summer. You may have read about microgreens in Sunday’s issue of the North Raleigh News. They can be any greens, and they are sold when they are mere babies, a few days or a couple weeks old.

Two Raleigh women, Tami Purdue and Yvette Ruffin, recently began their microgreen business, Sweet Peas Urban Gardens, and now they are teaming up with Julie Gauthier, a veterinarian who also operates Chickcharney Farm near Oxford and became a market vendor last year. She sells microgreens through The Produce Box, a home delivery service.

The microgreens are sold in breathable green bags that can be composted. Try them in smoothies or just make a salad with grape tomatoes, scallions and cucumbers from the market. Gauthier will continue to also offer chicken.

You can find all these and much, much more from 8 a.m. to noon in the OneCare Inc. parking lot behind CVS along North White Street.

Along with local vegetables from several vendors, shoppers will find eggs, a wide variety of meats – chicken, beef, pork, lamb, goat and rabbit – as well as cheese, honey, knit hats and blankets, fresh-cut flowers, breads and baked goods, including gluten-free baked goods, jewelry, honey, garden art, locally roasted coffee, peacock feathers and jewelry.

The veterans in the VFW tent always have a raffle going or are willing to take your donation for the different groups that help veterans.

The Wake County Master Gardeners know the answers to your tough questions about gardening in red clay and heat, and they will give you a soil test kit so you can learn how best to treat your soil.
