The Better Business Bureau serving Eastern North Carolina is warning consumers about The Devil is a Lye, an online T-shirt shop based out of Durham. The company currently has an F rating with BBB and has received over 350 inquiries and 35 complaints over the past three years.
The majority of the complaints submitted to BBB state customers’ products were never delivered. One complainant reported placing an order in November of 2016 for a Christmas gift for their child. “After calling for months, leaving messages with no call back … I gave up. In April 2017 I got an email apologizing for the delay saying there was a production problem and the order would be fulfilled by the end of the month. It is now November 2017, and no delivery nor refund,” the complainant wrote.
BBB has attempted to contact Devil Is a Lye on numerous occasions via phone, email and mail. Mailings, phone calls and emails to the business have all gone unanswered. As of February 2018, their website was active but it seems to no longer be available.
BBB offers the following tips when shopping online:
Check first with BBB. We have business reviews for more than 4.7 million businesses. Visit bbb.org and read past customers’ experiences and see how the business responds to complaints.
Check the website’s security. Before ordering any merchandise, check the URL link to make sure it starts with “https://” (the ‘s’ means it is secure). Also be sure to look for the padlock icon located at the corner of the URL bar.
Shop with a credit card. In case of fraud, a credit card provides additional protection and it’s easier to dispute charges with your credit card company.
Keep documentation of order. Save a copy of the confirmation page or email confirmation until you receive the item(s) and are satisfied. Be sure to know and understand the return policy, and keep this documented with your purchase records.
