Betty Ann Lindsey

Betty Ann Mitchell Lindsey was born in Franklin County on July 30, 1944. She fought a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease until at home, surrounded by her family, Jesus came to take her to her new home on Sunday night, July 15, 2018.
She was a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church. Betty was a daughter of the late Floyd Hester and Lucille Pulley Mitchell and granddaughter of the late Alfred and Allie Mitchell and the late Burnie and Sarah Pulley. She was also predeceased by a baby sister, Aileen Carol Mitchell.
She is survived by her husband of 34 years and caregiver, Danny Joe Lindsey; two step-children, Danny Lee Lindsey and Christy (Jonathan) Weaver; step-grandchildren, Savannah Weaver, Logan, Jake and Matthew Lindsey; sister, Janie Mitchell Ray; nieces, Lynn and Kristy Burke, Hailey and Kaitlyn Klein; and nephews, Josh Burke, Mike, John, Jacob, Colton and Wyatt Ray. She is also survived by two other sisters, a brother, nieces and nephews.
Joe and Betty were married on July 2, 1984 in Franklin County. Betty worked at Corner Drug Store, Aerotron, Terminal Communications and retired from Surtech Assembly in Youngsville. She loved Jesus, children, her family, and made many lasting friendships in each place she worked. She will be missed by many.
Joe, Janie, Lynn, Kristy, and Melvin (Betty’s care team) wish to express their thanks and appreciation to the following. A special thanks to Dr. William Ferrell and his nurse, Kate, at Raleigh Neurology who diagnosed this in February 2014 and had been with us through this entire time.

Peggy Bowles Spivey
Raleigh
Peggy Bowles Spivey, 82, of Raleigh went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 21, 2018, after living a full and blessed life, and her eternal spirit will shine brightly forever. Peggy was born December 29, 1935 in Stuart, Virginia, to the late Ruffus Woodrow Bowles and Nellie Mae Vaughn.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Paul Gurney Spivey; children: Paula Barrington and husband, Rodney, of West Chicago, Illinois, Linda Murray and husband, Eddie, of Dudley, Richard “Rick” Spivey of Charlotte, and Judith Spivey, M.D., retired, of Greenville, South Carolina; brother, Clarence Bowles and wife, Elnora, of Hopewell, Virginia; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Murray, John Barrington and Paul Barrington.
After she graduated from Millbrook High School, she studied at Kings Business College. Her first employment was with the NC State Horticultural Department. She also worked for Occidental Life Insurance Company.
Peggy and her husband have been fortunate and blessed to have had many deep and special friends through Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. She was the longest living member of the church. She became a member years ago as a single young lady and introduced her future husband to Mt. Vernon. Their church family has supported each other during sickness, health, challenging and joyful times.
Peggy’s caregivers have also become a significant and loving part of her family, including Phyu Phyu Mon and Nan Dar Aye. The family appreciates Kindred Hospice of Oxford being there for support and care.
A service to celebrate Peggy’s life was held Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Dr. Shannon Scott and Kevin Moore officiating. Interment followed in the old Mt. Vernon Baptist Church cemetery.

Anita Janet Beck
Wake Forest
Anita Beck peacefully departed this world on July 23 after an extended and progressive illness.
She was born in Lexington and moved with family to Kinston where she spent most of her youth. After graduating from Kinston’s Grainger High School in 1956, she went on to Rex Hospital School of Nursing in Raleigh. After her years as a nurse at Rex, she focused on family and home as a wife and mother. She spent many years as an active member of the community of golf professionals and golf course management teams in Virginia Beach, Virginia and Whispering Pines. In Wake Forest, she worked as part of the teams at Paschal Golf Club and Wake Forest. Before retirement, she worked as a nurse at WakeMed in Raleigh.
Anita was a lively soul who enjoyed the game of golf, time at the beach with friends, adventures of traveling the world, a good book, engaging conversation and a good laugh. She was a strong woman with a can-do attitude. She embraced the challenges of life with a spirit of learning, sharing and growing through experience. Her life was enriched with meaningful life-long friendships with and the joy of wonderful grandchildren. She now rests in everlasting peace and comfort in heaven through the mercy of God.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Avery Edward Beck and Evelyn Barton Beck, as well as her ex-husband Macon James “Jim” Johnson.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Amy Heinbockel Burgoyne (Bill); grandchildren, Jack, Anna and Will of Richmond, Virginia; brother, Larry E. Beck Sr. and sister-in-law, Ellen Mood-Beck, of Bermuda Run; and nephew, Larry E. Beck Jr. She leaves behind many friends and loved ones from Wake Forest and Virginia Beach, the golf communities in Virginia and North Carolina and from her nursing career. Her beloved caregiver, Petra Dorsey of Wake Forest, brought her comfort and laughter and was a steadfast companion in her last years.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the SPCA or to the local food bank.
Services will be held in the Chapel of Bright Funeral Home on Saturday, August 4, 2018. A visitation at 1 p.m. will be followed by a memorial service at 2. Burial will be the following week at the Forest Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum in Lexington and will be private.

Dennis Robert McKiernan

Dennis Robert McKiernan, 78, of Franklinton, formerly of Foresthill, California, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2018. He was born in Chicago, Illinois to the late James Patrick McKiernan and Dorothy Kruger McKiernan.
Mr. McKiernan was a retired landscape superintendent for San Jose Evergreen Community College District and the City of San Jose. As a landscape superintendent, he was passionate about his work, horticulture, design and had a special love for azaleas. He has inspired a love for plants in all those he came in contact with and his legacy will live on in all of his garden designs and in all of the beautiful plants, especially azaleas, he propagated over the years.
Private services will be held at a later date.
Mr. McKiernan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary O’Mara McKiernan; seven children (Dennis, Christopher, Julie, Phillip, Laura, Timothy and Sean); 18 grandchildren (Dennis, Spencer, Aisling, Kailee, Danielle, Steven, Kellie, Joseph, Matthew, Haley, Eimile, Jason, Mark, Maya, Aiden, Abigail, Amelia, and Juliette), and five brothers (James, Thomas, Michael, William and Christopher).
He was preceded in death by his two sisters (Susan and Patricia), and his son Mark.

Frances Steenburg Loftis, 79, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, July 31, 2018, at her residence. She was born in Hampton, Virginia, the daughter of the late Beatrice Fern Mannon Steenburg and Alfred Freeman Steenburg. She was a member of Neuse Baptist Church.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon, August 3, 2018, at Neuse Baptist Church.
Mrs. Loftis is survived by her husband, Thomas “Tommy” Loftis; her children, Thomas Allen Loftis Jr and his wife, Shirley Ann, of Bullock; Amos Ryland “Yogi” Loftis and his wife, Linda, of Youngsville, David “Chris” Loftis and his wife, Jennifer, of Youngsville, and grandchildren, Madison Loftis, Kylie Loftis, Caitlin Pavese and Tyler Pavese.

Mamie Andrews Moore

Mamie Andrews Moore, 79, passed away Monday evening July 30, 2018, at her residence. She was born in Durham County, the daughter of the late Josie Mae Todd Andrews and John Gregory Andrews. She was preceded in death by her husband, David Moore.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 2, 2018, at Harris Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Moore is survived by her son, Ed Moore (Kelly); a daughter, Jennifer Hill (Bryan); grandchildren Alli Lewis (Curtis), Hunter Hill, Maggie Hill, all of Youngsville; sister, Johnnie Mae Williams (Curtis); brother, William Andrews (Doris), both of Youngsville; a niece; Teresa McCall of Kenly; and a nephew, Greg Williams of Georgia.
